NBC’s successful reality duo of American Gladiators and Deal or No Deal, the nights most-watched program among adults 18-49 and total audience, propelled the network to a Monday night victory.

Over on Fox, ‘The Sarah Connor Chronicles’ took another step downward, but still performed well among the key A18-49 demo and grew respectably from its lead-in.

Stronger than average showing from Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? powers Fox to a first place finish on the evening among adults 18-49.

CBS, however, took the night among households and viewers thanks to strong performances from the nights most-watched program CSI (which was a repeat) and Without a Trace.

American Idol remained down from its year-ago numbers, but the show was still far and away the strongest for the evening with over 30 million viewers.

Additionally, the series continues to negatively affect its competition, as all four networks (with the exception of NBC which remained a solid second place) experienced significant loss of audience in the 8:00-10:00 time period.

My full analysis of the nights programs follows after the jump.

The return of American Idol was huge as expected, but the show was actually down a bit from last season’s premiere.

None the less, because of the show, Fox outdrew the combined viewer and A18-49 total of the remaining four networks.

NBC and CBS held off episode two of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles and the return of Prison Break as both networks were a competitive first and second among households and viewers.

Fox though managed a second place finish among adults 18-49 (NBC was first).

In its time series debut, The Sarah Connor Chronicles declined by 45% among viewers and 44% among adults 18-49 from the night prior.  That’s certainly a negative, but its overall performance (over 10 million viewers and 3rd place for the night among adults 18-49)  was still solid.

NBC won the night thanks to the continued strong performance of American Gladiators and the nights most-watched program in all three categories (Deal or No Deal).

ABC saw its new series Dance War: Bruno vs. Carrie Ann perform well in its second week out, with minimal loss from the week prior, but the network was hurt by poor performances from Notes from the Underbelly and October Road.

ABC and CBS each returned their powerhouse programs (CSI and Grey’s Anatomy) and both shows performed on par with their most recent airings. Grey’s Anatomy took the household and adults 18-49 win, while CSI came away with the win among total viewers.

Helping CBS secure the household and viewer win for the night was Without a Trace, while ABC stayed just strong enough to take the A18-49 win for the night.

Third place for the night went to Fox, which got strong numbers from Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader.

And lastly, NBC saw so-so numbers for its comedy lineup, Celebrity Apprentice and ER. Despite a weekly decline (obviously inflicted because of the addition of CSI and Grey’s Anatomy to the hour), Celebrity Apprentice showed very solid growth from its lead-in.

NBC continues to rate incredibly well during the new year, as the network was once again the most-watched for the evening among households, viewers and adults 18-49, with strong numbers from week two of the new season of The Biggest Loser and season-high numbers for the nights most-watched program Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.

Elsewhere on the evening, CBS’s presentation of The 38th Annual People’s Choice Awards was very negatively affected by the changed format (due to the WGA writers strike) as the program posted series low numbers (off a staggering 56% among viewers and 54% among adults 18-49 from the year prior).

The CW got some good news, as the season five premiere of One Tree Hill got off to a great start (mostly on par with last season’s premiere), giving the network a much needed ratings boost.

ABC meanwhile struggled, dropping to a very weak last place for the evening among adults 18-49, as the network failed to successfully return Carpoolers and According to Jim posted another poor showing after last week’s season premiere.  The networks coverage of The 2008 New Hampshire Primary also failed to garner many eyeballs to the network.
