Apple Premieres iTunes Movie Rentals January 15, 2008 3:02 pm

Apple has announced a new service, iTunes Movie Rentals, which features movies from all the major movie studios.  Users can rent movies for as low as $2.99 (catalog, $3.99 for new releases) and watch them on their Macs, PCs, all current generation iPods, iPhone and Apple TV.

High-Definition versions can be had for just a $1 more ($4.99/$5.99).

NBC has decided to not renew their TV contract with Apple’s iTunes video download service. In response, Apple has refused to offer any of NBC’s new fall TV shows available to download. Meaning shows such as The Bionic Woman, Journeyman and Chuck will not show up on the service.

NBC Universal shows already on the service such as Heroes and Battlestar Galactica will continue to be offered through the remainder of the current 2-year contract, which ends in December.

Downloads on Microsoft’s Xbox Live service are up 400% since the company introduced downloading of television and movies in November of last year, making the site the second most popular behind Apple’s iTunes.

Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple Computer, unveiled a new set-top box that allows users to stream video from their computers to their tv’s, as well as a new mobile phone that downloads and plays music.

Both devices were announced and showcased by Steve Jobs during his keynote at Macworld. It was also announced that Apple Computer, Inc. has stripped the “Computer” from their name and will now go by simply Apple, Inc.

HBO looking to launch Online Video Service December 11, 2006 6:55 pm

According to HBO’s Eric Kessler, president of sales and marketing for the channel, the network hopes to launch a broadband-video service sometime during the 2007 calendar year.

“We believe we can do with the broadband platform what we did with the on-demand product for our partners,” Kessler said. “Our goal is to create a broadband product with our affiliates that would continue to increase our usage and the value of HBO to our subscribers.”

No other details about the service have been announced, but it is expected to contain the same original series, specials and sports offerings currently available on HBO On Demand (a subscription based VOD channel).

The last of the two new console launches occured today.  The Nintendo Wii has gone on sale for the price of $249.99.  There are expected to be some shortages due to the demand, but there should be a greater supply than what was offered with the PS3.

Starting this Tuesday, “NBC Nightly News” and “Meet the Press”, both from NBC, will be offered online from podcasts.msnbc.com free of charge.
‘Nightly News’ will be available each evening at 10:00 PM, while “Meet the Press” will be available every Sunday at 1:00 PM (all times eastern).

Amazon has added a few more television shows to their recently debuted Video Download service titled Unbox.

The series, which will be sold individually for $1.99 each or at a slight discount if purchased by season, include “Weeds,” “Sleeper Cell,” and “Penn & Teller: Bullshit!, and the pilot episode of new series “Dexter”, which will be sold for only one cent.

Trying to capitalize on the growing online video downloading market, Amazon has unveiled a new iTunes like service called Unbox.

The service currently is offering a wide range of television shows and movies in high-quality DVD video, including recent movies such as V For Vendetta and Firewall, and even currently airing shows like Prison Break and Bones.
