ABC’s Dancing With the Stars drew more than 20 million viewers, leading the network comfortably past the competition to take first place on the evening.  Week three of Castle didn’t go so well, however, with the show dipping by double-digits across the board, and falling below 10 million viewers (Note: The numbers will likely fall more when the finals are released because DWTS ran two minutes into the 10:00pm hour).

Following in second place was CBS.  I’m confused about why the network decided to move How I Met Your Mother to 8:00pm and put a repeat at 8:30pm, but whatever the reason, it did not work at all.  The show dipped significantly (by more than double-digits).  Rules of Engagement also slipped a bit at 9:30pm (it led out of a repeat of Two and a Half Men) but managed a still healthy number among adults 18-49, with near 100% retention among the demo (I know it aired out of a repeat, but its still noteworthy).  CSI: Miami closed out the evening as the night’s #2 most-watched program after Dancing With the Stars.

Fox aired a repeat of House last night, but an original episode of 24 kept the network in a solid third place, with very little loss in viewership from the week prior.

NBC was stuck in fourth place with original installments of Chuck, Heroes and Medium. The biggest news is that Heroes hit series lows yet again.

And rounding out the was The CW which failed to get much traction out of Gossip Girl and One Tree Hill.

Week two of the new season of Dancing With the Stars held mostly steady from last week’s premiere, leading ABC to a first place finish with an audience of nearly 21.1 million viewers and a 5.3 A18-49 rating.  Perhaps the more important bit of news coming from ABC though, was the performance of the new Nathan Fillion drama Castle.  Week two was nearly identical to week one, which is actually pretty good news.  We’ll see where the show heads in the coming weeks, but ABC must definitely be pleased that there was no decline in viewership from the week prior (despite the still weak retention levels). Update: Final numbers show that the episode increased slightly over last week’s premiere among viewers (but was down slightly among adults 18-49–click through the jump for more analysis).

There was a tie for second place, with CBS coming out on top among households thanks to consistent performances from its comedy and CSI: Miami line-up and Fox taking second place among viewers and adults 18-49 with solid performances from House and 24.

Fourth place belonged to NBC, which saw abysmal numbers for its complete repeat lineup and fifth place went to The CW, which saw weak numbers for returning dramas Gossip Girl and One Tree Hill.

ABC’s Dancing With the Stars returned strong last night (click here to see the score results of night one and vote for who you believe was the best), improving upon the show’s last season premiere by a solid 11% in adults 18-49 rating.

Meanwhile, the series premiere of Castle drew only so-so ratings, drawing 11.60M viewers and a 3.3 A18-49 rating.  That’s merely okay.  Half-hour to half-hour double-digit declines and sub-50 percent retention from the last half-hour of Dancing With the Stars is concerning.

Second place was heavily contested, with CBS coming out on top among households, but Fox narrowly finishing ahead in viewers and adults 18-49.  Both networks, however, experienced week-to-week declines in the face of stiff competition from Dancing With the Stars.  All four comedies on CBS (from 8:00-10:00pm) experienced double-digit week-to-week declines among households and viewers, while House drew lower than average numbers.  While its lead-in was down, 24 managed to remain even from the week prior, even managing a slight, but noteworthy, nine percent gain from the week prior in A18-49 rating.  Over on CBS, the network saw its best performance at 10:00pm with a new episode of CSI: Miami which easily bested its fellow competition.

Fourth place went to NBC, which had very little to be happy about last night.  Most concerning was the continued slide from Heroes, which yet again hit series lows among households, viewers AND adults 18-49.  Not good (be sure to check out my extensive feature on the show’s ratings decline at this link).

The CW, the only network running repeats, was last place.

There’s no doubt that one of the biggest surprises of the TV season is the performance of The Bachelor and no where is that more evident than in the ratings for last night.  The show’s season finale, it’s 13th, drew an impressive 15.46 million viewers and a 5.4 rating in the key A18-49.  Not only is that an episode-to-episode increase in the double-digits, but that’s an improvement over the franchise’s weakened 12th season finale in May of last year by an extraordinary 75% in viewers and 69% in A18-49 rating.

If that wasn’t amazing enough, the 10pm special, After the Final Rose (which effectively served as hour #3 due to the Bachelor’s uneasieness with his original choice) grew, drawing a record 17.47M viewers and a 6.7 A18-49 rating (that’s growth of 5% among viewers and 12% in A18-49 from hour two of The Bachelor finale).

Even though ABC had a dominant performance, there was still room for the night’s number two network, CBS.  The always consistent comedy and CSI: Miami line-up put the network placed second in households, viewers and adults 18-49.  Worth noting is that the season three premiere of Rules of Engagement saw only a slight loss of viewership (although its decline in A18-49 rating was slightly more concerning at low double-digits).

Fox finished in third with a special two-hour edition of 24.  I’d say the results were mixed. The show did well, but it still shed a few viewers from the week prior. Let’s put it this way, when ABC did their special ‘movie event’ type Brothers & Sisters episode on Sunday night, it resulted in a double-digit increase for the program.  So Fox no doubt were hoping for a slightly better performance.

Moving to NBC…boy, where to begin?  The network is just struggling on Monday night’s.  The once reliable and buzz-worthy series Heroes is a shadow of its former self.  It just barely managed to draw over 7 million viewers for the second week in the row, teetering on series lows, and lost more steam in the key A18-49 demo, posting a 3.2 rating (down 6%).  I think I’m going to go ahead and put together a feature on the show to be posted on the site later in the week.  The show’s incredible loss of viewership, and in such a short amount of time, simply can no longer be ignored.

Medium did better (in terms of overall viewership), but was hurt by direct competition with Bachelor, shedding more than 1 million viewers from the week prior.

The CW closed out the evening with barely viewed repeats of Gossip Girl and One Tree Hill.
