81st Annual Academy Awards Nominations January 22, 2009 10:46 am

academyawards-012109The biggest news, I feel, about the just-announced nominations for the 81st Academy Awards is that The Dark Knight was not nominated for best picture, best director OR best writing.

Heath Ledger did get a nomination for best supporting actor, but I find it absolutely extraordinary that The Dark Knight was relegated to one acting nomination and a bunch of technical nods.

Having seen all the films nominated for Best Picture — save The Reader which I’ll check out shortly — I’m just baffled that The Dark Knight didn’t get nominated.  The film was good enough for the producers and the writers and the directors, but the Academy didn’t see fit to award it with any of those nominations?

Heck, if The Dark Knight wasn’t your thing, then what about The Wrestler?  Snubbed for best director, best picture, best writing and even best original song for Bruce Springsteen?

It’s all just odd, and an absolute shame.

So it’ll be The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Frost/Nixon, Milk, The Reader and Slumdog Millionaire for best picture.  Enough of my rambling, full list of nominations follows after the jump. (more…)

UPDATED ON 1/22/2009
Nielsen reports that from 10am to 5pm ET, an average 37,793,008 tuned into the ceremony, swearing in, speech and coverage of the Inauguration.  That’s the second-most ever, slightly below the 41,800,260 who watched Reagan’s nomination in January 1981.

Keep in mind that the number does not include any online viewers or radio listeners and this covers a very large time period (President Obama’s oath took place shortly after noon and his speech lasted about 20 or so minutes ending shortly before 12:30pm).  The amount of Americans who tuned into that segment was decidely larger.

It must have been, because Gallup has releaed a poll indicating that a massive 60% of the nation tuned into all of the address.  Do the math and you’ll see there’s a large discrepency between the two numbers.

Original article follows below.

CNN was the ratings winner among cable-news networks during coverage of Tuesday’s inauguration of President Barack Obama, according to data released today by Nielsen.

For the swearing-in ceremony and Inaugural Address in Washington — from noon to 12:30pm — CNN drew 8.5 million total viewers, well ahead of Fox News Channel (5.5 million total viewers) and MSNBC (3.1 million total viewers).

Breaking out the numbers more fully, CNN was also first from 11am to 2pm Tuesday, with 6.9 million viewers, followed by Fox News Channel (4.4 million viewers) and MSNBC (2.6 million viewers). CNN’s numbers are the most ever 11am to 2pm average in its history.

And finally, for the total day of the inauguration — 6am to 3am — CNN placed first with an average of 4.0 million total viewers, with Fox News following in second with 2.5 million viewers and MSNBC in third with 1.7 million viewers.

Demo data — which CNN also dominated (beating Fox News and MSNBC combined) — follows after the jump. (more…)

bsg-520The final episodes of the SCI FI series Battlestar Galactica got off to a solid start on Friday night, with the season 4.5 premiere episode “Sometimes a Great Notion” earning a 1.6 household rating and 2.11 million total viewers.

The show did well in the key demos as well, drawing over 1.3 million adults 18-49 and over 1.4 million adults 25-54.

SCI FI hypes the show’s performance (declaring double-digit gains), but the comparisons are made against the season 4.0 average, not the season 4 premiere.  When compared against the season 4 premiere, the show was flat (off just 1% or 30,000 viewers from the fourth season premiere which drew 2.14M viewers).  Among the key demos, however, the show was off slightly more (10% among adults 18-49 (4.0 premiere had 1.4 million) and 7% among adults 25-54 (4.0 premiere had 1.5 million).

2012-012109

Sony has pushed back the release of Roland Emmerich’s sci-fi action film 2012 from July 10, 2009 to November 13, 2009.

“We’ve had such success with the James Bond films in November that we wanted a big tentpole film in that slot this year,” Sony distribution president Rory Bruer said Tuesday. “We’ve got so many films in the summer that this is the perfect answer to that.”

Quantum of Solace debuted with $67.5 million last November, en route to a franchise record $168.1 million domestically.

The film will go up against Warner Bros. Sherlock Holmes, which stars Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, andn Fox’s Dwayne Johnson comedy The Tooth Fairy.

jksimmonsspidermanJ.K. Simmons, who played J. Jonah Jameson in the first three Spider-Man films, told MTV that he will be returning for the fourth film in the franchise:

The fourth film in the blockbuster “Spider-Man” franchise will begin shooting in 2010, actor J.K. Simmons told MTV News at Sundance, revealing that he’ll continue in the role of Daily Bugle publisher J. Jonah Jameson. “I saw Sam [Raimi] at his Christmas party.”

“We’ve definitely brainstormed ideas for Triple-J, but I have no desire to make Triple-J more of the focus of those movies,” he said. “The amount that I did in 1, 2 and 3, is just exactly right. Like be the wolf. Come in, blow in, do a week, blow out, be the comic relief, and hit the road. And let Tobey and everybody else do the heavy lifting.”

Spider-Man 4 is scheduled to hit theaters in May 2011.

When 20th Century Fox announced that X-Men Origins: Wolverine would be heading into extensive re-shoots, some fans expressed concern that the movie wasn’t heading in the right direction.  Fox has stood firm in saying that the re-shoots were always planned, and the movie will be just fine.  Now, star Hugh Jackman is responding to those concerns via an e-mail to AICN (which includes a brand new promo photo; included on this page) and is insisting that all is well and that the film “will be badass and hopefully meet all of your expectations”.

Here’s the full e-mail:

Hey everyone –

It’s Hugh Jackman, sending this note from freezing Vancouver. I have read a lot of your online comments regarding the footage that we are currently shooting and I share your passion for the Wolverine character and the movie – I owe it all to you guys!

I wanted to reach out and let you know that due to scheduling conflicts with certain cast members and location/weather considerations, we had to wait until now to shoot a couple of scenes. Please rest assured that WOLVERINE will be badass and hopefully meet all of your expectations. I am stoked by the positive response to the teaser, which clearly reflects the tone and scope of the film. If you like that, we’ve got much more in store!

In the meantime, here’s an exclusive shot of some characters you may recognize…

Cheers,

Hugh

watchmensmall-010809The details of the recently announced settlement between WB and Fox have leaked.  Nikki Finke of Deadline Hollywood Daily reports that WB will have to give Fox 8.5% of the gross of the film, plus some up front cash which includes “recoupment of its development costs and attorney fees”.  Additionally, Fox will have a piece of the franchise from this moment forward, so if WB decides to make a sequel or any spin-off’s — however unlikely that may be — Fox will get a take of its profits.

I’d say Fox made out really, really well, huh?

Keanu Reeves Confirmed for Cowboy Bebop January 16, 2009 2:34 pm

cowboybebop-011609THR has confirmed the news that Keanu Reeves is attached to star in 20th Century Fox’s big screen adaptation of the late-90’s Japanese anime Cowboy Bebop.

One of the big titles in anime, “Bebop” is set in a time where “astral gates” make interstellar travel possible. Humanity, decimated by a lunar explosion resulting from a gate accident, spread out across the solar system, as did crime, which gave rise to the use of bounty hunters.

Reeves would play Spike Spiegel, a bounty hunter and former member of a crime syndicate. Spiegel, along with Jet Black, a fellow bounty hunter and former cop, are the two pilots of the spaceship Bebop.

Peter Craig is writing the script.
