New Line has confirmed that a sequel to last year’s hit release, Sex and the City, is on the way and that the entire cast will be returning. The confirmation came from New Line Cinema spokeswoman Candice McDonough who revealed that star Sarah Jessica Parker, her three co-stars (Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon) and writer/director Michael Patrick King are all signed on for a sequel.
New Line’s parent company Warner Bros. hopes to have the sequel out in summer 2010.
Released last May on a budget of just $65 million, Sex and the City went on to gross an impressive $415.3 worldwide ($152.7 million domestically and $262.6 from foreign markets).

During Time Warner’s earnings call yesterday, CEO Jeff Bewkes said that the studio would like to ensure Batman and Superman and perhaps Sherlock Holmes become long-lasting franchises, such as what they have/had with Harry Potter:
“We look at Harry Potter. It’s fantastic to have franchises that last that long. We want to do that with Batman and Superman and perhaps Sherlock Holmes. The sequels are as good, with new characters added, as were the originals. That wasn’t the case in the years ago. Warners has more tentpoles as an on-going strategy taht very much lifts its distribution and performance. We think that’s going to hold up our slate in the 2009 – 2010 period. We’ve got four more big tentpoles coming this year.”

According to Variety, the story is set in the distant future, as a space war threatens Hyperion, a planet known for the Time Tombs — large artifacts that can move through time and are guarded by a gruesome monster called the Shrike.

The details of the recently announced settlement between WB and Fox have leaked. Nikki Finke of Deadline Hollywood Daily reports that WB will have to give Fox 8.5% of the gross of the film, plus some up front cash which includes “recoupment of its development costs and attorney fees”. Additionally, Fox will have a piece of the franchise from this moment forward, so if WB decides to make a sequel or any spin-off’s — however unlikely that may be — Fox will get a take of its profits.
I’d say Fox made out really, really well, huh?
Watchmen hits theater on March 6, 2009.
