New Watchmen Image + Zack Snyder Launches New Website January 30, 2009 6:33 pm

EW has a new image of what director Zack Snyder says is one of the first glimpses audiences will have of the film’s anti-hero, Rorschach, as he shoots a grappling gun into the Comedian’s apartment while investigating his fallen comrade’s mysterious death. Snyder also today announced a new website for his production company Cruel and Unusual Films. Check it out at cruelfilms.com. Here’s what Snyder told EW about the site:
“We just wanted to have a place where people could see what we’re up to,” Snyder tells EW.com exclusively about the site. “As a company, we’re into a lot of cool stuff, like aesthetic and design. The movies we make, and are making, feed a lot off of pop-culture.” The site includes a section called The Lounge, where the company — which includes producer Wesley Coller and Snyder’s wife and producing partner Deborah Snyder — list what they’re watching (the anime film Appleseed), reading (Ayn Rand’s The Fountainhead) and listening to (Allison Crow’s “Hallelujah”).
Snyder also invites artists to submit versions of the Cruel and Unusual Films logo: A rough-and-tumble anime Catholic schoolgirl called Baby Doll who’ll be the heroine of Snyder’s in-the-works project Sucker Punch. “I always thought it would be cool, like, ‘Hey, Frank Miller, you should draw a version of Baby Doll,'” Snyder says. “[Drawing her] is kind of a fun assignment, you know, for the world.”

Watchmen Soundtrack and Score Details January 25, 2009 4:59 pm
Posted by Rosario T. Calabria in Movies, Music, News, Score, Soundtrack, Watchmen.add a comment
Warner Sunset/Reprise Records have announced that both the official soundtrack and the original score to Zack Snyder’s Watchmen will be released on March 3rd, just three days before the release of the film. Here are some details on the release.
Music From The Motion Picture Watchmen , the film’s official soundtrack, includes My Chemical Romance’s powerful reinterpretation of Bob Dylan’s “Desolation Row,” recorded exclusively for the film. The soundtrack also features a collection of classic songs by such artists as Nat King Cole, Simon & Garfunkel, and Janis Joplin, which, once heard in the context of the film, will never be thought of the same way again.
Watchmen Original Motion Picture Score features music by recording artist, composer, and music producer Tyler Bates, who was asked to score the film by Watchmen director Zack Snyder. Tyler, who also scored the Snyder-directed films 300 and Dawn of the Dead, has also scored the soundtracks to The Day the Earth Stood Still, Showtime’s Californication, Slither, Rob Zombie’s Halloween, and The Devil’s Rejects. He is known for his surprising juxtapositions of music styles and flair for delicate, atmospheric touches, as well as stressing emotional vibrancy over traditional formulas of music compositions. Bates has also been chosen to score the Watchmen‘s DVD added story, “Tales From The Black Freighter.”
Music From The Motion Picture Watchmen and Watchmen Original Motion Picture Score will be released in multiple fan-friendly configurations: The physical CD, and a digital album will be available on March 3rd, and a vinyl edition of the soundtrack will be released on March 17th.
Watchmen Music Collectors Edition 7″ Box Set will be released on March 24th. The box set contains 7 double-sided 7″ picture discs of each Watchmen character on one side, and images in the likeness of the graphic novel on the other. The Watchmen Music Collectors Edition 7″ Box Set will include My Chemical Romance’s “Desolation Row,” along with 13 tracks by Tyler Bates.
Track list and full press release follows after the jump. (more…)

WB/Fox Settlement Details January 16, 2009 3:52 pm
Posted by Rosario T. Calabria in 20th Century Fox, Movies, News, Warner Bros, Watchmen.add a comment
The details of the recently announced settlement between WB and Fox have leaked. Nikki Finke of Deadline Hollywood Daily reports that WB will have to give Fox 8.5% of the gross of the film, plus some up front cash which includes “recoupment of its development costs and attorney fees”. Additionally, Fox will have a piece of the franchise from this moment forward, so if WB decides to make a sequel or any spin-off’s — however unlikely that may be — Fox will get a take of its profits.
I’d say Fox made out really, really well, huh?

Warner Bros. and Fox Settle Watchmen Suit January 15, 2009 11:54 pm
Posted by Rosario T. Calabria in Movies, News, Watchmen.add a comment
Great news in the Warner/Fox Watchmen suit. The two studios have settled their dispute. The two sides will present a settlement to Judge Gary Feess soon and request that the case be dismissed.
Terms of the agreement were not disclosed, but the deal is said to involve a sizable cash payment to Fox and a percentage of the film’s boxoffice grosses; Fox will not be a co-distributor on the film, nor will it co-own the “Watchmen” property, but it will share in revenue derived from it. The studios released a joint statement last night.
“Warner Bros. acknowledges that Fox acted in good faith in bringing its claims, which were asserted prior to the start of principal photography,” the statement read. “Fox acknowledges that Warner Bros. acted in good faith defending against those claims.”

Watchmen Hearing Canceled January 14, 2009 3:25 pm
Posted by Rosario T. Calabria in Movies, News, Watchmen.add a comment
Here’s some good news, hopefully. Next Tuesday’s court conference between Fox and Warner Bros. has been canceled, indicating that a settlement in the case could be near.
Settlement talks between the two sides became serious before the weekend and continued throughout the weekend.
The settlement could cost Warners tens of millions of dollars. Warner Bros. actually had a similar copyright ownership issue ruled against them in 2005 for The Dukes of Hazzard. That settlement cost the studio a reported $17.5 million. Interestingly enough, the same Judge, Gary A. Feess, blocked that release.
The film’s budget is somewhere in the $130 million range, but advertising and other expenses make Warners stake higher (I’ve seen it reported at $150 million, the advertising budget is likely around the $20 million range). THR reports that Fox is asking for upfront fees as well as a percentage of the back-end.
Watchmen Trial Update January 11, 2009 4:59 pm
Posted by Rosario T. Calabria in Movies, News, Watchmen.add a comment
The chances are looking up that Watchmen will make its March 6th release. The two studios at the center of the conflict, Fox and Warner Bros, have asked federal judge Gary A. Feess to delay the upcoming hearing because “settlement talks have been productive”. That’s great news considering the sides had been assumed to be very much apart on settling. The request surprised Feess, who noted that earlier in the week Warner Bros. asked to move the trial to before January 20th because they wanted a quicker decision on whether or not they could release the film on 6th of March.
Lou Karasik, who is representing Fox, told the judge that the delay would be “very, very helpful” to settlement discussions he calls “productive.”
In other news related to this lawsuit, producer Larry Gordon has joined Lloyd Levin in talking about the legal issue. The producer sent a lengthy letter to judge Feess. Read about it at THR.
Open Letter from Watchmen Producer January 8, 2009 4:37 pm

Lloyd Levin, one of the producers of this year’s upcoming film Watchmen got in touch with HitFix about the legal battle that’s currently raging between Warner Bros. and Fox. Lloyd has offered an open letter regarding the Watchmensuit and the 20-year struggle to get the project on screen. It’s a very interesting read, so check it out below (and continue through the jump to read the entire letter).
“Watchmen. A producer’s perspective.
An open letter.
Who is right? In the Watchmen dispute between Warner Brothers and Fox that question is being discussed, analyzed, argued, tried and ruled on in a court of law. That’s one way to answer the question – It is a fallback position in our society for parties in conflict to resolve disputes. And there are teams of lawyers and a highly regarded Federal Judge trying to do just that, which obviates any contribution I could make towards answering the “who is right” question within a legal context. But after 15 plus years of involvement in the project, and a decade more than that working in the movie business, I have another perspective, a personal perspective that I believe important to have on the public record.

Watchmen Updates: New Viral Site, Spin-Off Given R-Rating + New Photos January 8, 2009 11:15 am

Just a couple additional updates to report this morning on Warner Bros’ Watchmen on top of the trial news reported earlier this morning. First up, Warner Bros. has launched a new viral site: TheNewFrontiersman.net. The website is in reference to the far right-wing magazine featured in the Watchmen comic that Rorschach gets much of his conspiracy theory-obsessed news from. Photos, video and more is expected in the coming weeks.
Also, RopesofSilicon that the Watchmen comic-within-a-comic Tales of the Black Freighter, which will be released on DVD, has been given an R-Rating by the MPAA for “Violent and Grisly Images.”
And finally, TotalFilm Magazine has some brand new photos from the film. I’ve included two on this article, click to enlarge, check out the rest right here.
Watchmen, if all goes well with the trial, will hit theaters on March 6, 2009.
Warner Bros. Wants Watchmen Decision To Come Sooner Than the 20th January 8, 2009 10:45 am

Warner Bros. has asked Judge Gary A. Feess to decide whether to issue an injunction against the fim’s release sooner than January 20th. The studio wants the hearing moved up to as early as Monday because “time is critical.” The issue at hand is Warner Bros. must soon commit to tens of millions of dollars in marketing costs for a film that it is unsure it can release. For more details on this issue, including background of Fox’s case and what may lie ahead in terms of litigation, check out this piece at The Hollywood Reporter.

The Los Angeles Times is reporting that lawyers for 20th Century Fox and Warner Bros. have both agreed to forgo a trial and let a federal judge decide on whether or not Warner Bros. will be allowed to release Watchmen on March 6th, as scheduled. A preliminary ruling on December 24th by Judge Gary A. Feess ruled that Fox owned a copyright interest in releasing the film.

Fox Will Try To Stop Release of Watchmen December 29, 2008 6:44 pm
Posted by Rosario T. Calabria in Movies, News, Watchmen.1 comment so far
An attorney for 20th Century Fox tells the AP that the studio will seek an order to delay the release of Warner Bros. Watchmen. U.S. district Court Judge Gary Feess last week came down with a ruling agreeing with Fox that Warner Bros. had infringed its copyright by developing and shooting the film. A trial is scheduled for January 20th to decide any remaining issues.
An attourney for Warner Bros. said that he didn’t know if an appeal was coming, but that he thinks a trial is necessary and a settlement is unlikely.
Watchmen is still scheduled for release on March 6, 2009.
