The Oakland Press recently did an interview with Sam Raimi, where the Michigan native revealed that he may be coming back to the state to shoot scenes for Spider-Man 4. Here’s an excerpt from the article:
Raimi is slated to begin production on “Spider-Man 4” in 2010, in fact and, he said, envisions shooting some of that movie in Michigan.
“I’ll be looking at Michigan for our second-unit photography on the new ‘Spider-Man’ film,” he confirmed.
The extensive infrastructure needed to crank out megabudget productions like the three “Spider-Man” movies he already has made has, for the most part, kept him in Hollywood, Raimi pointed out.
“Producers are always looking at the bottom line, and if they can get the same looking stuff somewhere else cheaper, they’re going to shoot there,” Rumble said.
Such was the case with “Spider-Man 3.”
“It was cheaper to shoot in Ohio because the streets we were shooting on had storefronts that looked a little bit more like New York than Detroit did,” Raimi explained. “But if the incentives Michigan has now had been in place, we would have had the money to adapt a set in Detroit.”
Spider-Man 4 is scheduled to hit theaters in 2011.

J.K. Simmons, who played J. Jonah Jameson in the first three Spider-Man films, told MTV that he will be returning for the fourth film in the franchise:
The fourth film in the blockbuster “Spider-Man” franchise will begin shooting in 2010, actor J.K. Simmons told MTV News at Sundance, revealing that he’ll continue in the role of Daily Bugle publisher J. Jonah Jameson. “I saw Sam [Raimi] at his Christmas party.”
“We’ve definitely brainstormed ideas for Triple-J, but I have no desire to make Triple-J more of the focus of those movies,” he said. “The amount that I did in 1, 2 and 3, is just exactly right. Like be the wolf. Come in, blow in, do a week, blow out, be the comic relief, and hit the road. And let Tobey and everybody else do the heavy lifting.”
Spider-Man 4 is scheduled to hit theaters in May 2011.

Director Sam Raimi spoke with Empire and told the magazine that he would most like to see Morbius as the next villain for Spider-Man 4:
“I like it in the Marvel comics when Spider-Man fights Morbius,” said Raimi. “He’s really cool. A vampire! I like that combination of superhero plus supernatural.”

Pulitzer prize winning author David Lindsay is in final negotiations with Columbia Pictures to write Spider-Man 4. The writer won the pulitzer for the 2007 drama Rabbit Hole. It’s unclear if Lindsay-Abaire will be writing a new draft for the film, or simply rewriting James Vanderbilt’s previous draft.
THR also notes that both Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire will be back as director and star, respectively, and that Kirsten Dunst is also expected to return.

Raimi and Maguire Signed for “Spider-Man 4” (and maybe 5) + Venom Spinoff News September 10, 2008 3:33 pm

Nikki Finke of Deadline Hollywood Daily is reporting that Sony has signed both Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire for Spider-Man 4. DHD further notes that while Kirsten Dunst (Mary Jane) hasn’t been signed yet, her character is in the film and Sony “would never recast her”. Sony is also happy with the script turned in by James Vanderbilt which leaves open the possibility for moving directly into a fifth film so they are hoping that Raimi and Maguire are willing to shoot the two films back-to-back.
Additionally, Finke reports that there is no interest in Sony in pursuing a darker tone, ala The Dark Knight, with her source saying “Spider-Man is its own thing” and unlike Batman “Peter Parker has no dark side himself”, instead “Peter Parker’s struggle is about sacrifice.” Also, Finke’s source talked about the villains in the film and hinted that “once you find out who the villain is, you’ll know who’s playing it”. Meanwhile on the Venom spin-off front, Sony is apparently interest in keeping Topher Grace (who played the character in Spider-Man 3) despite his demise in the film because the “likeable actor could be a sympathetic evildoer”.
The news has also been confirmed via the trades.

During a conference with theater owners last week, Spider-Man producer Laura Ziskin revealed that Spider-Man 4 is being tentatively scheduled for a May 2011 release. She also confirmed that James Vanderbilt has not yet turned in a final screenplay. Despite that, Sony Pictures is very hopeful that the film will be on track for a 2011 release.

Just a few days ago we found out that apparently James Vanderbilt turned in a script for “Spider-Man 4” that allowed for Sony to shoot 4 and 5 back-to-back. Now comes news from Marvel’s Vice Chariman, Peter Cuneo via IESB talking about when we may see the Spider-Man on the big screen again:
“As far as Spider-man 4, it’s really up to Sony, it’s up to them, most likely scenario is 2010 or 2011 but we can’t speak for them and I think, that we don’t know. They have given us their re-up payment for that film so you know they’re going to make it within a reasonable time frame. Sony may be looking at some issues with the cast and so on, I think they have to make some decisions.”
I suppose we’ll know soon enough. I anticipate that we’ll likely soon be hearing whether or not their be going in a new direction (i.e. new cast) or continue on with the current cast.
