“Star Trek” Report June 27, 2008 4:57 pm

Harry Knowles over at AICN is one lucky guy.  Knowles was recently screened footage of Paramount Pictures’ Star Trek from none other than director J.J. Abrams.  Here’s a highlight (spoilers follow):

He showed me a scene of Ben Cross (Sarek) & Winona Ryder (Amanda Grayson) cradling a baby Spock on the surface of Vulcan. A baby with Spock ears is kind of amazing to look at. But there was no dialogue here, and Vulcan wasn’t really there yet – what was there was a great rock formation that kinda reminded me of that wonky mountain/cliff thing from ARENA / BILL & TED. That said, it wasn’t the ARENA formation – and JJ said that zero effects had been done on this yet – so the lighting wasn’t right, the sky wasn’t right and there were no angry volcano type things or structures in the background, but he assured me… it’ll all look very Vulcan when it is done.

More highlights follow after the jump, or if you like, just head here to read Harry’s complete report.

Producer Frank Marshall revealed to IESB that the plan is begin shooting the fourth Jason Bourne movie next summer, for release in 2010.  As reported back in February, director Paul Greengrass and star Matt Damon are set to return.  Marshall also confirmed that they’ll probably be creating an original story for the movie (predicting that Bourne will be headed to South America), since creator/author Robert Ludlum only wrote three books and wasn’t involved in the later books in the series:

IESB: The Bourne series, are we going to see another one?

Frank Marshall: Oh absolutely, Bourne 4…Hopefully we’re going to be shooting next summer for release in 2010.

IESB: Do you know which way the story is headed, is it going to be the next book?

FM: No actually, there was a fourth book written, but it was not by Mr. Ludlum, so we’re probably going to take our own direction, and we’re working on what that storyline is going to be right now.

Though he wouldn’t reveal any plot details, Marshall did say that the story would likely take place in South America.

Early ‘Dark Knight’ Review + New Viral June 25, 2008 3:30 am

With just over three weeks to go before the release of The Dark Knight (are you as psyched about this film as I am?) the first review has been released (the film is being selectively screened for press). Courtesy, AICN, here’s a highlight from the very encouraging review:

Heath Ledgers performance of the joker is truly one for the books. Aman of no remorse or morals who simply wants to see things burn. There is no back story or establishing the character. He is fully formed. He does have some dialogue scenes that reveal a bit of his background.Lets just say he has some issues with his father and that smile of his is rooted in a gesture of love. He is far from a caricature and has depth . He realises that without Batman he would not be. The Joker is almost more of a terrorist than criminal. He is not motivated by money. He wants to see people suffer. Its a damn shame that this was Heath Ledger’s final major performance as it shows a whole different side to him as a performer and I now know that he was endlessly talented.

Another highlight, plus a new viral, after the jump.

A new trailer for the comedy-spoof Diaster Movie has been released.  Check it out here.

Synopsis
In “Disaster Movie,” the filmmaking team behind the hits “Scary Movie,” “Date Movie,” “Epic Movie” and “Meet the Spartans” this time puts its unique, inimitable stamp on one of the biggest and most bloated movie genres of all time – the disaster film.

“Disaster Movie” follows the comic misadventures of a group of ridiculously attractive twenty-somethings during one fateful night as they try to make their way to safety while every known natural disaster and catastrophic event – asteroids, twisters, earthquakes, the works – hits the city and their path as they try to solve a series of mysteries to end the rampant destruction.

Taking aim at everything and everyone, from “Indiana Jones” and “Iron Man” to Amy Winehouse and “High School Musical,” “Disaster Movie” lampoons the blockbuster movie, pop culture icons and public figures along the way as Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer satirize everything as only they can.

Disaster Movie hits theaters on August 29, 2008.

Looks like we’ve got the official title of the upcoming live-action adaptation of G.I. Joe.  During the Cinema EXPO in Amsterdam, Netherlands (which kicked off today) a new poster for Paramount Pictures’ G.I. Joe movie was spotted.  The poster features Channing Tatum as Duke, and reaveals that the full title of the movie is G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra. Click through the jump to check it out.

Synopsis
The movie will be a modern telling of the “G.I. Joe vs. Cobra” storyline and its compelling characters that Hasbro created 25 years ago. The premise of this fantasy is the story of the G.I. Joe team, led by Duke, and their “fight for freedom wherever there is trouble” against the evil Cobra Commander and his Cobra force. This storyline was an instant hit with kids in the early 1980s, spawning a highly popular 3-3/4-inch action figure line, comic book collection and animated series. The G.I. Joe team will not be based in Brussels. Instead, they will be based out of the “Pit” as they were throughout the 1980s comic book series. And, in keeping with the G.I. Joe vs. Cobra fantasy, the movie will feature characters and locations from around the world. Duke, the lead character and head of the G.I. Joe team, will embody the values of bravery and heroism that the first generation of G.I. Joe figures established.

G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra hits theaters on August 7, 2009

Universal release a new trailer for The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor on the Papa John’s website. You can watch the trailer after the jump.  Click here to skip past the synopsis.

Synopsis
The blockbuster global “Mummy” franchise takes a spellbinding turn as the action shifts to Asia for the next chapter in the adventure series, “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.” Brendan Fraser returns as explorer Rick O’Connell to combat the resurrected Han Emperor (Jet Li) in an epic that races from the catacombs of ancient China high into the frigid Himalayas. Rick is joined in this all-new adventure by son Alex (newcomer Luke Ford), wife Evelyn (Maria Bello) and her brother, Jonathan (John Hannah). And this time, the O’Connells must stop a mummy awoken from a 2,000-year-old curse who threatens to plunge the world into his merciless, unending service.

Doomed by a double-crossing sorceress (Michelle Yeoh) to spend eternity in suspended animation, China’s ruthless Dragon Emperor and his 10,000 warriors have laid forgotten for eons, entombed in clay as a vast, silent terra cotta army. But when dashing adventurer Alex O’Connell is tricked into awakening the ruler from eternal slumber, the reckless young archaeologist must seek the help of the only people who know more than he does about taking down the undead: his parents.

As the monarch roars back to life, our heroes find his quest for world domination has only intensified over the millennia. Striding the Far East with unimaginable supernatural powers, the Emperor Mummy will rouse his legion as an unstoppable, otherworldly force…unless the O’Connells can stop him first. Now, in “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor,” the trademark thrills and visually spectacular action of the “Mummy” series will be redefined for a new generation.

“The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor” is helmed by director Rob Cohen (“The Fast and the Furious,” “xXx”) and written by Alfred Gough & Miles Millar (“Spider-Man 2,” television’s “Smallville”). Reprising their roles as producers in the series are Bob Ducsay, Sean Daniel, Stephen Sommers and James Jacks.

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor hits theaters on August 1, 2008.
