Shattering expectations, Michael Patrick King’s big-screen adaptation of the HBO series Sex and the City opened on Friday with an impressive $27 million, and is estimated to have a $55.7 million weekend. Most analysts had pegged the film to score around $30-40 million over the weekend so these results are quite surprising.

Rumor: James McAvoy as Bilbo Baggins? May 29, 2008 12:38 pm
Posted by Rosario T. Calabria in Casting, Movies, News, Rumors.add a comment
There’s a new rumor circulating the net that has James McAvoy playing Bilbo Baggins in Guillermo del Toro’s The Hobbit. The Daily Express reports:
“A number of names have been doing the rounds, including Daniel Radcliffe and Jack Black, but James (MCAvoy) is the one the film’s bosses really want. They’re expected to have talks soon so hopefully it could be confirmed in the not too distant future.”
Though the British source singles out McAvoy, considering the inclusion of two other names, it’s perfectly reasonable to conclude that this rumor has no basis in fact.
Expanding on this a bit. If you missed the chat Peter Jackson and Guillermo del Toro participated in this past Saturday over at TheOneRing.net (click here for that article), Guillermo said that he has plans to utilize Ian Holm (who played Bilbo in the Lord of the Rings trilogy) in “some fashion for sure” and that “the difficulty of the role will be better assessed after” the screenplays are completed. Del Toro also expressed the same thoughts in an interview with Empire Magazine just last week:
“We are writing based on [Ian Holm’s performance], but other than that, we have ideas [of who could play him],” Del Toro told us. “I can tell you that it’s down to a few names that we all agree upon. And that our first choice…completely, magically, we said the same name. All of us!”
COMMENT: So assuming this rumor pans out (and we’ll have to wait awhile as Del Toro has said casting announcements are a year away) what do you think?

Murphy and Ratner Teaming up for Beverly Hills Cop 4 in 2010 May 29, 2008 12:19 pm

Are you ready for some more Axel Foley? Paramount is moving forward with a fourth installment in the Beverly Hills Cop franchise, according to Variety. Eddie Murphy is already attached to reprise his role as Detroit detective Axel Foley and the studio is negotiating with Brett Ratner to direct. Paramount is looking to begin production in 2009 with hopes to debut the film in the summer of 2010. No script has been written yet, so a writer will be hired shortly.
The first film in the series was released in 1984 and went on to gross an impressive $316 million worldwide. The sequel was also a success, pulling in $300 million three years later in 1987. But when the studio went to the well one last time in 1994, the results were mixed. Though the budget was kept in line, Beverly Hills Cop III grossed just $119 million worldwide.
Overall, the three films have combined to gross $735 million.

Like last year, I’ve decided to create a programming guide for the fall season. My 1st edition for Fall 2008 is online now. This year’s edition is a little less bloated than last year’s and I’ve done it in a different, more simple style. It also only has premiere dates for the NBC shows. That will of course be remedied once the other networks make their announcements. I also plan to add a few other things, such as synopses for the new shows, in future updates.
You can download the file here (Excel .xls file) or click the above image.
Please feel free to leave any comments here on the site or via e-mail (russtc@yourentertainmentnow.com).
The file(s) will also be posted on the 2008/2009 television page (which you can access here).
I will be updating and re-uploading on a continual basis as I make corrections, edits or if schedules change.
I hope you find it useful!

“The main picture is nearing three hours long and I know I have a fight on my hands just with that,” Snyder told the New York Times.
The article mainly focuses on Tales of the Black Freighter, the story-within-the-story. In addition to directing Watchmen, Snyder has also directed Tales of the Black Freighter and the studio will release the movie as a stand-alone DVD just five days after the release of the main picture in March 2009.

Spider-Man 4 in 2010? May 24, 2008 9:50 pm
Posted by Rosario T. Calabria in Movies, News, Spider-Man 4.4 comments
Just a few days ago we found out that apparently James Vanderbilt turned in a script for “Spider-Man 4” that allowed for Sony to shoot 4 and 5 back-to-back. Now comes news from Marvel’s Vice Chariman, Peter Cuneo via IESB talking about when we may see the Spider-Man on the big screen again:
“As far as Spider-man 4, it’s really up to Sony, it’s up to them, most likely scenario is 2010 or 2011 but we can’t speak for them and I think, that we don’t know. They have given us their re-up payment for that film so you know they’re going to make it within a reasonable time frame. Sony may be looking at some issues with the cast and so on, I think they have to make some decisions.”
I suppose we’ll know soon enough. I anticipate that we’ll likely soon be hearing whether or not their be going in a new direction (i.e. new cast) or continue on with the current cast.
