‘Evan’ #1 Film, But Opens Weaker Than Expected June 23, 2007 12:03 pm

Evan Almighty, the Steve Carell starring sequel to the 2003 Jim Carrey hit Bruce Almighty opened in first place on Friday with an estimated $11.13 million from 3,602 theaters. Certainly not a terrible debut, as it’ll coast to past $30 million over the weekend, but its much lower than initial estimates ($50M+) and revised lowered estimates from the studio Universal, who were hoping for $40M.

FOX takes the evening with its solid combination of ‘5th Grader’ and ‘Dance‘, despite the later losing a bit of steam. CBS a close second among households and viewers.

TBS Lands Rerun Rights to “The Office” and “My Name Is Earl” June 21, 2007 11:41 pm

In an unexpected deal, NBC Universal has put together a $100+ million package for the rerun rights to NBC’s two hit comedies: The Office and My Name Is Earl. TBS will get the cable rights, while 10 Fox O&O (owned and operated) stations will get the network rights in a shared-window deal.

FOX’s two-hour edition of So You Think You Can Dance? leads the network to an easy victory among viewers and adults 18-49. CBS’s presentation of AFI’s 100 Years…100 Movies, keeps the network close among households.

The new Michael Moore documentary about the U.S. health care system will be opening a week early.  The film will open on June 22 at the AMC-Loews Lincoln Square Theater in New York City, ahead of its nationwide June 29th debut.

NBC easily takes the evening with strong performances from the season finale of Deal or No Deal and a special edition of Dateline which featured the two princes of England. Not all was great for NBC though, as the series premiere of Age of Love bled much of its strong lead-in audience. Plus Cable numbers for select shows.

Hitting new records for a basic-cable program, the third season premiere of the TNT hit The Closer was watched by an amazing 8.81 million viewers on Monday night, based on fast national ratings.

Blockbuster has decided to favor Blu-ray over HD DVD when it comes to offering rentals of the high-definition discs at a majority of their B&M stores. HD DVD movies will still be rented at a select amont of stores and through their online service.
