Fox’s original programming wins the evening, with So You Think You Can Dance? leading the way as the nights most watched program among adults 18-49.  CBS was a solid second place, as the network had the nights most watched program among households and viewers (CSI).

ABC has decided to renew its long-running sitcom, giving the series a seventh season in primetime.  After leaving it off its 2007/2008 schedule at the upfronts, ABC has ordered 18 episodes of the show, which will now likely be its last.

TNT, early into its summer schedule, is tinkering with their Monday night schedule, moving Heartland out of the post ‘Closer’ time slot and rescheduling the debut of the Holly Hunter starring drama Saving Grace, which will move into that time slot on Monday, July 23.

I’d just like to make a quick note on a few changes I’m going to be doing on the site, mostly pertaining to ratings, but also an update on the 2007/2008 development slate.

Basically, I’m going to be trimming down my analysis of repeats. Which means there will be a reduced focus on week-to-week ratings for programs that are in repeat mode (which is a lot this time of year since we’re in the summer months). Analysis will remain the same, and perhaps even increase, on my reporting for programs airing original installments.

The latest installment in the Die Hard franchise, Live Free or Die Hard, opened with a comfortable $9.11 million on Wednesday, with the studio happy with the first feedback received from early exit polling from moviegoers.

With Warner Bros. passing on renewing their rights to the Conan: The Barbarian franchise, Variety is reporting that the film rights to the Robert E. Howard classic are being picked up New Line Cinema.

According to Variety, a trio of today’s top animators (Fred Seibert, Kevin Kolde and Eric Gardner) have teamed up to form their own production company called Frederator Films, and their first project will be feature length adaptation of the Cartoon Network series Samurai Jack. The tree animators will serve as producers of the project, as well any other future projects.

The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Cartoon Network and Hasbro Inc. are teaming up to co-produce a new animated Transformers series.  The show will premiere in January with the two companies hoping to build on the momentum from the films release this July, and then the expected DVD release this fall.

Though it doesn’t appear desirable to have additional installments of the Kill Bill franchise, considering how well Part II ended, that’s exactly what the executive producer of the first two films, Bennett Walsh said at the Shanghai International Film Festival last week, even going so far as to reveal the plot details of the two sequels.

Jon Favreau, director of the upcoming Iron Man film, announced on his MySpace group that principle production on the film has ended. The director also (indirectly) addressed rumors circulating about Hilary Swank having a cameo in the film.

Disrupting the trend of CBS’s now common weekly wins.  Despite being down a significant amount from the week prior, NBC still got a solid performance from America’s Got Talent (the nights most watched program).

NBC today announced that Joey Fatone, the former member of ‘N Sync and more recently seen on last spring on ABC’s Dancing With the Stars, has been chosen to host the networks upcoming singing competition series The Singing Bee.

CBS takes the evening in large part to the networks solid performance from their repeat programs. The other networks, meanwhile, fail to break through, posting incredibly low ratings in some cases.

Weekend Box Office — June 22-24, 2007 June 24, 2007 5:49 pm

Evan Almighty was first for the weekend, but underperformed, managing only $31.19 million from 3,604 theaters. The film was well off from its predecessor, the 2003 Jim Carrey hit Bruce Almighty, which grossed an impressive $67.95 million. With its huge budget of $175 million (Bruce Almighty’s budget was $81 million), the movie has quite a ways to go before it breaks even, let alone is considered a hit.

1408 was strong in second place, while Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer takes a big, though not entirely unexpected, plunge in its second week. Year-to-year, the box-office was down very slightly (2.2%). (more…)
