twilight-1-small-72308It appears Summit Entertainment is in store for a very big opening weekend for Twilight, the vampire-themed film based on the best-selling book series by author Stephenie Miller.  Current forecasts have pegged the film at making between $60 million to $65 million, a range that could be easily exceeded if the midnight gross is any indication.

Twilight is currently No. 3 on Fandango.com’s list of top advance ticket sales. Only Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and The Dark Knight sold more.

abclogo-513ABC has decided to order more episodes of Life on Mars, but has decided not to pick up Pushing Daisies, Dirty Sexy Money and Eli Stone.

The network hasn’t officially canceled the three shows, however, leaving open the possibility of ordering new episodes in the future, although that seems very unlikely. All three shows remain on the schedule for the time being.

Life on Mars, meanwhile, which received an order for four more hours, bringing its first year to a full 17 episodes, will be put go on hiatus starting December 11th, when Private Practice moves into its time period. Mars returns with new episodes January 28th at 10pm, airing after Lost (which premieres its new season the preceding week).

And finally, ABC has set a premiere date for Scrubs. The former NBC series that the network picked up after it was canceled will premiere Tuesday, January 6th at 9pm. with back-to-back episodes for two weeks, before settling into its regular time slot at 9:30pm.

thewolfman-112108The horror site Fangoria Online is reporting that Universal is delaying Joe Johnston’s The Wolfman from its previously announced April 3, 2009 debut to sometime next fall:

Fango just heard through the grapevine that we may have to wait a little longer to see Benicio Del Toro get hairy. Word is that Universal is delaying THE WOLFMAN from its previously announced April 3 debut to sometime next fall.

Synopsis
Inspired by the classic Universal film that launched a legacy of horror, ‘The Wolfman’ brings the myth of a cursed man back to its iconic origins. Oscar® winner Benicio Del Toro stars as Lawrence Talbot, a haunted nobleman lured back to his family estate after his brother vanishes. Reunited with his estranged father (Oscar® winner Anthony Hopkins), Talbot sets out to find his brother…and discovers a horrifying destiny for himself.

Lawrence Talbot’s childhood ended the night his mother died. After he left the sleepy Victorian hamlet of Blackmoor, he spent decades recovering and trying to forget. But when his brother’s fiancé, Gwen Conliffe (Emily Blunt), tracks him down to help find her missing love, Talbot returns home to join the search. He learns that something with brute strength and insatiable bloodlust has been killing the villagers, and that a suspicious Scotland Yard inspector named Aberline (Hugo Weaving) has come to investigate.

As he pieces together the gory puzzle, he hears of an ancient curse that turns the afflicted into werewolves when the moon is full. Now, if he has any chance at ending the slaughter and protecting the woman he has grown to love, Talbot must destroy the vicious creature in the woods surrounding Blackmoor. But as he hunts for the nightmarish beast, a simple man with a tortured past will uncover a primal side to himself; …one he never imagined existed.

cwlogo-513Poor ratings have forced The CW to end its relationship with Media Rights Capital, the company that had been producing its Sunday night line-up.  The contract was terminated after MRC couldn’t follow up with its payments to The CW.  That was no doubt the case due to its extremely low ratings on Sunday night, some of the lowest ever for the network.

The three shows that aired on Sunday’s this season were In Harm’s Way, Valentine, Inc. and Easy Money.\

In the meantime, The CW will air repeats of the first season of the canceled CBS drama Jericho at 7pm and movie repeats from 8-10pm.

beautyandthebeast-112108Disney is updating the classic animated film Beauty and the Beast.  Producer Dan Hahn and directors Kirk Wise and Gary Trousdale–the filmmakers behind the 1991 feature film—are using the original computer files to create a new Disney 3-D version of the film.  The new version will be released in 2010.  It will be the studio’s 11th 3-D feature set for release between 2009-10.

“By going back to the original animation files, which have been carefully archived for 17 years, and using the separate background, effects and character animation elements, we’re able to come up with a fun and unique 3-D experience for existing and new fans of the film,” Hahn said.

Academy Disqualifies The Dark Knight Score November 13, 2008 6:31 pm

thedarkknightsoundtrack-111308Because the films music cue sheet lists five names as composers, the soundtrack to The Dark Knight has been disqualified by the executive committee of the Academy music branch.  Formal letters will be sent out to composers Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard, two who collaborated on the music, this week.  Their previous collaboration, Batman Begins, was disqualified in 2005 for the same reasons.

Sources inside the committee said that the big issue was the fact that five names were listed as composers on the music cue sheet, the official studio document that specifies every piece of music (along with its duration and copyright owner) in the film.

Zimmer said, in an interview with Variety prior to this week’s Acad action, that listing multiple names on the cue sheet was a way of financially rewarding parts of the music team who helped make the overall work successful. (Performing-rights societies like ASCAP and BMI use the cue sheet to distribute royalties to composers.)

myownworstenemy-111308NBC has pulled the plug on two of its shows: freshman drama My Own Worst Enemy and second-year series Lipstick Jungle, according to THR.  NBC had high hopes for ‘Enemy’, but the series got out of the gate poorly and sunk to a very poor 1.8 A18-49 rating and 4.3 million total viewers on Monday night.  Lipstick Jungle drew a weaker 3.3 million total viewers and a 1.2 rating among adults 18-49 on Friday.

It’s unclear at this time how NBC’s schedule will change.  Production continues on the ninth, and final, episode of My Own Worst Enemy (four have aired) while Lipstick Jungle has all 13 episodes of its initial order complete.

madtv-111308After 14 seasons on the air, Mad TV is coming to an end.  Fox confirmed on Wednesday that the Saturday night sketch series, which in the past has escaped cancellation, will end its run at the end of this season.

“There’s been great interest in recent years,” said exec producer David Salzman. “We’ve had a number of networks inquire as to whether the show was coming off Fox and saying that they’d be interested. We have not started to talk to them yet, but now is the time to begin those conversations. I think we have real prospects, but you never know, especially given the economy.”

Fox decided to inform the show’s producers of their decision now, rather than later in the season, in order to give them a chance to end the series with a proper sendoff:

“This will give us a proper sendoff, a chance to promote the finale and bring back old cast members,” Salzman said.
