Universal Studios today announced that filming is set for another direct-to-DVD presentation of their popular American Pie franchise. This will be the sixth chapter in the comedy series.
Principal photography on American Pie: Beta House began in Toronto on June 4, and the film will be released exclusively on DVD in time for the holiday season.

The mysterious teaser for the J.J. Abrams produced Paramount film that was attached to Transformers in many theaters (currently referred to as 1-18-08) has been released online and is available to download.

Paramount (DreamWorks)’s Transformers rolled over the competition this weekend, raking in $70.5 million from 4,011 theaters, pushing its domestic total past the $150 million mark and breaking a few records along the way.
In second place was last week’s number one film Ratatouille which had a modest drop of less than 40%.

The Superman Returns sequel, currently being referred to as Superman: The Man of Steel, has not been delayed. The project was assumed delayed due to possible conflicts in Bryan Singers schedule.

According to Friday estimates, the Dreamworks/Paramount picture Transformers took in $22.5 million from 4,011 theaters, pushing the Michael Bay directed film across the $100 million mark. It’s total domestic total now stands at an impressive $107.4 million as it heads into an expected $60 million plus weekend.

RTE is reporting that BBC is interested in the possibility of making a big-screen adaption of the original British version of The Office. Additionally, BBC would be interested in film deals for Little Britain and Ricky Gervais’s (creator/star of The Office) other show, Extras.

In an interview with the New Haven Register newspaper, producer Frank Marshall said that the film will be shot in the same vein as the first three and a reliance on CG effects will be kept to a minimum.

Disney/Pixar’s Ratatouille opened in first place for the weekend, but grossed a little below expectations. The film took in $47.03 million from 3,940 theaters. Cars, the studio’s last film, grossed $60.12 million when it opened last June. The film was expected to open at around $50-55 million.
In second place for the weekend was Fox’s Live Free or Die Hard. The film took in a solid $33.37 million from 3,408 theaters, bringing its three day gross to $48.40 million.
Year-to-year, the box-office was up slightly (+1.7%). (more…)
