Dreamworks/Paramount‘s Transformers had a successful launch on Monday night and Tuesday, with the film raking in an impressive $36.65 million through 28 hours of release, breaking the record for Tuesday in the process.
The Michael Bay directed action packed film, based on the popular transforming robots, grossed $8.8 million from its 8 and 10 p.m. showings on Monday night (from 3,050 theaters) and added another $27.85 million from its Tuesday full day opening (expanding to 4,011 theaters). The Tuesday take easily overtook Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, the previous record holder for that day ($27.85M vs. $15.73M).
Needless to say, this is an excellent start to the July 4th weekend for the well-budgeted ($150M) film, which is getting mixed reactions from critics (57% at Rotten Tomatoes, 61% at Meta Critic) but much better ratings from viewers (84% at RT, 7.9/10 at MC and a B+ from readers at Box Office Mojo).
Speaking for myself, I have to say it was an extremely satisfying and enjoyable film. Easily my favorite of the summer thus far.
Note: Post updated on Friday with Actuals and updated critic/fan scores.
