“Transformers” Passes $100 Million July 7, 2007 8:52 pm

According to Friday estimates, the Dreamworks/Paramount picture Transformers took in $22.5 million from 4,011 theaters, pushing the Michael Bay directed film across the $100 million mark. It’s total domestic total now stands at an impressive $107.4 million as it heads into an expected $60 million plus weekend.
This was an increase of a solid 17.3% from Thursday’s gross. Transformers continues to perform well and we’re looking at a definite $60-70 million opening weekend. Pretty remarkable, given initial estimates had pegged the picture grossing somewhere around half that in its first weekend.
It’ll be interesting to see how things go from this way forward, i.e. whether or not it turns out to be heavily frontloaded and has its box office returns affected by the upcoming Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (opens this coming Wednesday in more than 4,100 theaters).
Elsewhere in the top 10, Disney/Pixar’s Ratatouille increased by a strong 20.9%, taking in an estimated $9.5 million, pushing its total through eight days to $90.02 million. It’s currently in 3,940 theaters.
Fox’s Live Free or Die Hard also benefited from a strong increase, jumping up by 48.6% as it grabbed an estimated $5.35 million from 3,411 theaters. Through 10 days of release, the fourth installment in the Die Hard series is sitting at $72.11 million.
License to Wed grew much more than I had expected, increasing by 67.3% to take in an estimated $3.7 million from 2,604 theaters pushing its four day total to $11.12 million.
The romantic comedy should coast past the $10 million mark for the weekend barring some sort of extreme collapse on Saturday or Sunday.
Lastly, Sicko did not benefit any from its slight expansion, posting $1.0 million from 702 theaters (+261) and having to settle for 10th place. This estimated Friday gross is off by 29.1% from last Friday ($1.41M to $1.0M). The Michael Moore documentary is sitting at $8.85 million from its 15 days of limited release.
Look for a breakdown/analysis of the top 10 films tomorrow when the Saturday estimates are released and the studios prepare their weekend estimates.
