Shatner Is the Reason for the Absense of Kirk in Star Trek September 10, 2008 4:02 pm

Turns out that William Shatner’s Kirk was originally written into JJ Abrams new Star Trek film.
“We actually had written a scene with him in it that was a flashback kind of thing,” Abrams told AMC SciFi Scanner. “But the truth is, it didn’t quite feel right. The bigger thing was that he was very vocal that he didn’t want to do a cameo. We tried desperately to put him in the movie, but he was making it very clear that he wanted the movie to focus on him significantly, which, frankly, he deserves. The truth is, the story that we were telling required a certain adherence to the Trek canon and consistency of storytelling. It’s funny — a lot of the people who were proclaiming that he must be in this movie were the same people saying it must adhere to canon. Well, his character died on screen. Maybe a smarter group of filmmakers could have figured out how to resolve that.”
Co-writer Roberto Orci chimed in over at TrekMovie.com with the following note:
Alex [Kurtzman] and I did indeed come up with a sequence for Shatner that we wrote before the strike, although technically it wasn’t a flashback.
Orci also promised that once the movie comes out, he’ll “post the sequence in question.”

Raimi and Maguire Signed for “Spider-Man 4” (and maybe 5) + Venom Spinoff News September 10, 2008 3:33 pm

Nikki Finke of Deadline Hollywood Daily is reporting that Sony has signed both Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire for Spider-Man 4. DHD further notes that while Kirsten Dunst (Mary Jane) hasn’t been signed yet, her character is in the film and Sony “would never recast her”. Sony is also happy with the script turned in by James Vanderbilt which leaves open the possibility for moving directly into a fifth film so they are hoping that Raimi and Maguire are willing to shoot the two films back-to-back.
Additionally, Finke reports that there is no interest in Sony in pursuing a darker tone, ala The Dark Knight, with her source saying “Spider-Man is its own thing” and unlike Batman “Peter Parker has no dark side himself”, instead “Peter Parker’s struggle is about sacrifice.” Also, Finke’s source talked about the villains in the film and hinted that “once you find out who the villain is, you’ll know who’s playing it”. Meanwhile on the Venom spin-off front, Sony is apparently interest in keeping Topher Grace (who played the character in Spider-Man 3) despite his demise in the film because the “likeable actor could be a sympathetic evildoer”.
The news has also been confirmed via the trades.

Michael Moore’s latest film, Slacker Uprising, will be made available as a free download on the internet for three weeks beginning on September 23rd. The documentary chronicles Moore’s attempts at rallying young voters during the 2004 presidential election. According to Moore, the film–which cost just $2 million to make–was never intended to be released commercially:
This is being done entirely as a gift to my fans. The only return any of us are hoping for is the largest turnout of young voters ever at the polls in November. I think Slacker Uprising will inspire (millions) to get off the couch and give voting a chance.
The download will be available on BlipTV. Then after three weeks are up, you’ll be able to purchase the DVD through Amazon and Netflix.

Alright, so this whole will there or won’t there be a new TMNT film, and will it or won’t it be live-action has really been heavy in the news over the last several days. Apparently, the truth lies somewhere in between. TMNT co-creator Peter Laird confirmed to MTV that he has had “several meetings with very interested people” for a live-action/hybrid Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film.
The story is still in the very early stages and Laird even admits that they haven’t targeted a villain yet: “It would be fun to do something with the Shredder, but I am also excited about the possibility of creating some new characters for the movie.”
We’ll see where this takes us over the coming months and years.

Live-Action ‘TMNT’ Movie Planned September 3, 2008 7:25 pm

Kevin Eastman, co-creator of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle franchise, posted the following message on the Heavy Metal forum confirming rumors about a possible live-action TMNT film:
“Yes, it is true. Although the CGI film did well enough to warrant a sequel, there has been much talk between Imagi and Warners to do a better “re-invention” (newest Hollywood buzzword) of the TMNT’s, in a live action film–like what was done with Batman. Back to basics, back to the origin and the intro of the Shredder, etc…there have been talks, trips to Northampton to talk to Mr Laird, and discussions with the original “first” TMNT film director Steve Barron to come back and do it right–but no official word yet…will keep you posted.”
TMNT‘s gross was just shy of $100M ($95.01M), drawing $54.15M domestically and $40.86M from overseas markets. It had a relatively low-end budget of $34M.

Turns out Mark Millar wasn’t just blowing smoke when he revealed that he had a director and producer in mind for a new Superman project, and revealed that things were happening behind-the-scenes in regards to the Superman Returns sequel Man of Steel (which happened to be true).
In an interview with G4, Millar revealed his plans for a new trilogy of Superman films, which he wants to be shot back-to-back:
“A director approached me about three months ago,” Millar said. “and he said ‘look, [Bryan Singer’s] The Man Of Steel might not be happening. If that doesn’t happen, it has been spoken about the possibility of me coming in, would you like to write it?’ And I was like Yeah.”
“I’ve had this plan for like 10 years for a big three-picture Superman thing, like a big Lord of the Rings epic, starting over from scratch again with a seven-hour Superman story. And hopefully release them one year after another,” continued Millar. “If it works out, we’ll have to start shooting next summer.”
Millar also talked up his upcoming independently financed adaptation of the comic book Kick-Ass, revealing that the film will have a farely hefty $70M budget. Click here to watch the interview.

Warner Waiting on Nolan for “The Dark Knight” Sequel + TDK Passes $500M Domestic, $900M Worldwide September 1, 2008 11:59 pm

In an article from The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. revealed that the studio is waiting on director Christopher Nolanto come up with a “story and a plan”:
“There are a lot of us who emotionally would love to do it,” producer Charles Roven says. “But it’s really Chris’ call. Chris is the kind of filmmaker who just doesn’t think about the next movie before he has completely finished the movie he is working on.”
For now, Nolan is taking a well-earned vacation.
Says Roven, “When he comes back, we will see how he feels.”
Meanwhile, The Dark Knight drew a third place $8.62M (up one spot from the week prior) and now stands at $502.29M domestically. It’s only the second movie in the history of North American box office to reach $500M and the fastest to ever do it (45 days–Titanic hit $500M in 91 days). The movie’s expected to add another $2.41M on Monday ($504.7M).
In terms of overseas grosses, the movie has taken in $417M overseas, pushing its worldwide cume to $921.7M.
With only an estimated 18.3% drop from last weekend and the film performing better than expected during the weekdays, my estimate has been revised upward to between $518-527M.

SET “Watchmen” Covers September 1, 2008 11:46 pm

Watchmen was featured on the magazine SET. Check out the four covers below.
Synopsis
300’s Zack Snyder brings Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ critically acclaimed comic book Watchmen to the big screen, courtesy of DC Comics and Warner Bros. Pictures. Set in an alternate universe circa 1985, the film’s world is a highly unstable one where a nuclear war is imminent between America and Russia. Superheroes have long been made to hang up their tights thanks to the government-sponsored Keene Act, but that all changes with the death of The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), a robust ex-hero commando whose mysterious free fall out a window perks the interest of one of the country’s last remaining vigilantes, Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley). His investigation leads him to caution many of his other former costumed colleagues, including Dr. Manhattan, Night Owl (Patrick Wilson), Ozymandias (Matthew Goode), Sally Jupiter (Carla Gugino), and her daughter, The Silk Spectre (Malin Akerman). Heralded for bringing the world of superheroes into the literary world, Watchmen gave the super-powered mythos a real-life grounding that had been missing in mainstream comics to that point. The film adaptation had languished in one form of development hell or another for years after the book’s release, with various directors on and off the project, including Terry Gilliam, David Hayter, and Darren Aronofsky, as well as Paul Greengrass, whose eventual dismissal stemmed from budget conflicts with the studio.
Watchmen hits theaters on March 6, 2009.

Vin Diesel Wants Two ‘Riddick’ Sequels September 1, 2008 11:38 pm
Posted by Rosario T. Calabria in Movies, News, The Chronicles of Riddick.add a comment
Speaking with MTV, Vin Diesel revealed that screenwriter David Twowy is writing the scripts for not one, but two sequels for The Chronicles of Riddick. Dielsel is confident that the movie(s) will go into production:
“David Twowy right now is writing the scripts. The only question is whether we take a page from the ‘Lord of the Rings’ guys and try to shoot the two chapters at the same time. There are two more in mind,” he said of Riddick, the Furyan warrior first introduced in the 2000 film “Pitch Black.” “‘The Chronicles of Riddick’ was presented as a three part trilogy that would answer ‘Pitch Black’ in the same way that ‘Lord of the Rings’ answered ‘The Hobbit.’”
Dielsel continues to be interested in returning to the franchise:
“Everyone knows I love the Riddick character and I’m always working on it,” Diesel said. “It just takes five years to make another one because David Twohy and I are so precious about it.”

Synopsis
Universal Studios resurrects the classic lycanthrope with this tale of an American who experiences an unsettling transformation after returning to his ancestral home in Victorian-era Great Britain and being attacked by a rampaging werewolf. His brother having recently vanished without a trace, haunted nobleman Lawrence Talbot (Benicio Del Toro) returns to his family estate to investigate. What he discovers upon reuniting with his estranged father (Anthony Hopkins), however, is a destiny far darker than his blackest nightmares. As a young boy, the untimely death of his mother caused Talbot to grow up before his time. Though Talbot would attempt to bury his pain in the past by leaving the quiet Victorian hamlet of Blackmoor behind, the past returns with a vengeance when his brother’s fiancée, Gwen Conliffe (Emily Blunt), convinces him to return home and aid the search for his missing brother. But something monstrous has been stalking the residents of Blackmoor from the nighttime shadows, something not quite human. Not even recently arrived Scotland Yard inspector Aberline (Hugo Weaving) can dream up a rational explanation for the gruesome spell that has been cast over Blackmoor, yet rumors of an ancient curse persist to this very day. According to legend, the afflicted will experience a horrific transformation by the light of the full moon, their animal rage becoming far too powerful for their human bodies to contain. Now, the woman Talbot loves is in mortal danger, and in order to protect her he must venture into the moonlit woods and destroy the beast before it destroys her. But this isn’t your typical hunt, because before the beast can be slain, a simple man will uncover a primal side of himself that he never knew existed. Screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker pens a film directed by Joe Johnston and featuring creature effects by special-effects makeup legend Rick Baker.
The Wolfman hits theaters on April 3, 2009.
