With CBS out of the loop (the network aired a full lineup of repeats), ABC easily won the night across all three main categories, with growth from two of the network’s three shows (Ugly Betty was down). Grey’s Anatomy led the network (as the night’s most watched program among households, viewers and adults 18-49) with more than 15 million viewers, leading into a crossover-themed episode of Private Practice, which held onto a strong 85% of its total lead-in audience and an even more impressive 91% of its A18-49 audience.

In second place for the evening was Fox, which was led by timeslot winner Bones among households and viewers.  It seems like no matter where Fox places the show, it performs solidly.  The show posted gains from its timeslot premiere by more than 750,000 viewers. Lead-out Hell’s Kitchen declined by double-digits from the week prior (when it aired out of an original episode of American Idol) but managed to grow from its lead-in by 9% in the key A18-49 demographic, placing a competitive third place for the hour in that demo.

The biggest disappointment came from NBC.  The network’s attempts to heavily advertise their Thursday night lineup during the Super Bowl (which as everyone knows included airing The Office directly after the Super Bowl/postgame) failed and failed badly.  Every single episode for the evening declined from their last original airings including The Office. This was NOT the result that NBC wanted from their advertising push.  I mean, a loss of viewership from the Super Bowl episode of The Office was expected, but for the show to have returned even below its last original episode — even if by just a little bit (-4% among viewers and -6.5% among adults 18-49) — is just horrible, horrible news.

Rounding out the night’s remaining programs, CBS followed in third place for the evening among viewers and fourth place among adults 18-49, while The CW held up decently against strong competition with its lineup of Smallville and Supernatural (more so Smallville).

My full analysis of the night’s ratings follows after the jump. (more…)

thedarkknightDuring Time Warner’s earnings call yesterday, CEO Jeff Bewkes said that the studio would like to ensure Batman and Superman and perhaps Sherlock Holmes become long-lasting franchises, such as what they have/had with Harry Potter:

“We look at Harry Potter. It’s fantastic to have franchises that last that long. We want to do that with Batman and Superman and perhaps Sherlock Holmes. The sequels are as good, with new characters added, as were the originals. That wasn’t the case in the years ago. Warners has more tentpoles as an on-going strategy taht very much lifts its distribution and performance. We think that’s going to hold up our slate in the 2009 – 2010 period. We’ve got four more big tentpoles coming this year.”

masseffect-020409During the company’s fiscal year conference call, EA’s CEO John Riccitiello dropped some hints about a few games, including BioWare’s space-themed RPG franchise Mass Effect, indicating it may not have an exclusive console home on the Xbox 360:

“[In Q4], BioWare will release Mass Effect 2 on multiple platforms,” he said during a Tuesday earnings call.

While the original game was exclusive to the 360, it later appeared on PC.  Riccitiello did not mention any console in his statement, but when Edge Online, who reported the news, tried to contact EA, a rep said that “the company could not get into specifics about what Riccitiello meant by his ‘multiple platform’ comment.”

sdarko-020409S. Darko, the upcoming Donnie Darko spinoff — with no involvment from the original director — about Donnie’s sister, will not be hitting theaters.  io9 reports that MGM home entertainment will instead be releasing the film straight-to-DVD on April 28th.  io9 further reports that the trailer will be screened at the New York Comic Con this weekend (February 6-8).  I’ve attached a photo from the movie above (courtesy Bloody-Disgusting, click to get a better look).

In the meantime, here’s the already released teaser:

Synopsis
S. Darko takes place in the summer of 1995, seven years after the original film. It follows Donnie Darko’s younger sister, Samantha (Daveigh Chase), who, in the wake of his death, has found herself at age 17 with a broken family, mired in feelings of insignificance. She and her best friend Corey (Evigan) set off on a road trip to Hollywood in a bid to ‘make it big’, but their journey is cut short when their car breaks down unexpectedly, leaving them stranded in a small desert town. When a meteorite happens to crash-land nearby, Samantha is plagued by bizarre visions telling of the universe’s end and it appears that their breakdown was part of some grander plan. When she finds out she was actually adopted by the Darkos, and that she is in no way related to Donnie, she must face her own demons and, in doing so, save the world and herself.

Fox easily won the night, outpacing #2 CBS by nearly six million among viewers and NBC by nearly 4 rating points among adults 18-49.  The network saw week-to-week growth for both American Idol, and Fringe, more specifically Fringe, which grew by double-digits among households and viewers and more than 8% among adults 18-49.

CBS followed in second place, but perhaps more impressive, is that the network had just one original show air for the evening, 10pm time slot winner (among households and viewers), Without a Trace.  Any network that manages to draw over 14 million viewers for two repeats, both of which outpaced the original program at 10pm, deserves major kudos.

Finishing in third place was NBC, which actually managed a second place finish among adults 18-49 thanks to strong showings from both Biggest Loser, which continues to hold up strongly against American Idol (with just slight week-to-week declines) and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, which won its time slot among adults 18-49 by a comfortable margin, despite losing out among viewers by more than 1.5 million.

ABC was in fourth place, with not much good news to report.  All of the networks programs were below 6 million viewers.

In terms of overall audience, The CW, always in fifth place these days, performed quite poorly — the networks best show was 90210 which drew 2.40 million viewers.  However, was actually an improvement over the last original episode and the show posted an improvement of 18% in the demo.  My full analysis follows after the jump. electronicartslogo-020309During the company’s fiscal third quarter earnings call today, Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello announced that a Wii version of last year’s horror shooter Dead Space, which was released on the Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and PC last October, is on the way.

“We’re bringing core intellectual property to the Wii,” Riccitiello said. “Wii is the market leader — they’re getting half of our emphasis in terms of title count.”

IGN additionally revealed that it will be an original take on the game that will make full use of the Wii remote.
