Director James Cameron talked at the Microsoft Advance ’08 today about his upcoming sci-fi 3D film Avatar.

“‘Avatar’ will make people truly experience something,” said Cameron. “One more layer of the suspension of disbelief will be removed. All the syn-thespians are photo-realistic. Now that we’ve achieved it, we discovered CG characters in 3D look more real than in 2D. Your brain is cued it’s a real thing not a picture and discounting part of [the] image that makes it look fake.”

More Battlestar Galactica TV movies may be on the way May 20, 2008 1:13 am

BSG fans take note, the SCI FI channel may be looking into a way to bridge what’s expected to be a long gap between the two halves of the show’s fourth, and final, season.  Maureen Ryan of the Chicago Tribune is reporting that NBCU, who produces the show, is looking into producing up to three Battlestar Galactica TV movies (in the vein of the recent TV movie “Razor”):

“Executives are now doing number-crunching for these proposed films, and any deals for these movies are far from done. However, it would make sense to make more “Battlestar” TV movies while the show’s creative team and actors are still all in one place, as it were.”

Ryan also notes that series co-creator/executive creator Ron Moore is currently writing the series finale and that the three films would be made this summer.  And lastly, a new set of webisodes, linking the first and second halves of season four, is being prepared.

Read all of Ryan’s story here.

Considering the last TV movie only drew a 1.2 rating, I’m frankly surprised NBC would be so interesting in doing more.  Does the prospect of more of these prequel type TV movies excite you?

Screenwriters Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci have confirmed that Soundwave, who was rumored to appear in the original as an MP3 player, has been included in the script for Transformers 2.

“We had to get Soundwave in there,” Orci told IGN. “You know, we had Ravage in an early draft of the first movie and Soundwave, and we couldn’t do it right and I think this time hopefully we’ll have the ability to do it.”

The two writers also promised fans that the sequel will be more appealing to hardcore fans.  To read what the two had to say about that, continue after the jump.

George Lucas has an idea for Indy 5 May 20, 2008 12:48 am

The fourth installment isn’t even in theaters yet, but George Lucas is already talking up a potential fifth installment in the Indiana Jones franchise.  In an interview with FOXNews, the director revealed that he has an idea to make more Indy films, but with a twist, Mutt Williams (Shia LaBeouf) would be the lead character:

“I haven’t even told Steven or Harrison this,” Lucas told FOXNews. “But I have an idea to make Shia [LeBeouf] the lead character next time and have Harrison [Ford] come back like Sean Connery did in the last movie. I can see it working out.”

For his part, LaBeouf wasn’t against the idea as he expressed interest, though with some reservations, to MTV:

“I don’t think a Mutt spinoff would be as big as Indiana Jones,” LaBeouf told MTV. “[But] fingers crossed!”

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull hits theaters this Thursday.  Reviews are starting to trickle in and, thankfully, they’re mostly positive (It’s sitting at 81% currently at RT). So who else is excited for Indy?

Spider-Man 4 Script Turned in + Spidy 4 and 5 to be shot back-to-back? May 20, 2008 12:12 am

Apparently James Vanderbilt (Zodiac) has turned in a working draft of Spider-Man 4, but that’s not the big news.  Cinematical has received a scoop that “his story arc has encompassed two films, making Spider-Man 5 shootable at the same time. The studio saw dollar signs and is in the process of reworking his deal to snatch up the story arc.” The site notes that nothing is expected to be announced anytime soon as both sides are still trying to negotiate a deal.

So what do you think?  Shooting films back-to-back seems like all the rage these days, but is it the right move with Spider-Man, especially out of that weak third installment?

The two-hour season finale of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition and two episodes, including the fourth season finale, of Desperate Housewives put ABC well ahead of the competition Sunday night, despite not being able to quite match last year’s finales.  CBS saw okay results from its lineup of 60 Minutes and The 43rd Annual Academy of Country Music Awards, which drew more viewers and adults 18-49 from last year’s edition.

Fox followed up in third place led by the season finales of The Simpsons, King of the Hill and American Dad, though all three shows were off a good deal from their year-ago season finale numbers.

NBC was even from the week prior, while The CW rounded out the pack in last place, as the network aired its season finales of Everybody Hates Chris, Aliens in America and The Game.

CBS’s trio of finales (Ghost Whisperer, Moonlight, and Numb3rs) led the network to an easy Friday night victory, out-drawing its closest competitor ABC (who itself stayed afloat thanks to a finale of its own via America’s Funniest Home Videos) by nearly 2 million viewers and 23%.

Elsewhere on the evening, The CW got a rare reprieve from the bottom, as its WWE Smackdown pulled the network into third place among households and viewers (tied for third among adults 18-49).

Because so many shows (7) had their season finales last night, I’ve included ratings charts (for the entire  season) of each show, and you’ll find the decline/increase from the year ago numbers in parentheses below (HH= Households, V= Viewers and A18-49= Adults 18-49).  Don’t forget to click through the jump for even more analysis.

CBS took households and viewers on the strength of the season finales of CSI (Households: -12%, Viewers: -13%/2.72M, Adults 18-49: -24%) and Without a Trace (HH: -2%, V: +2%/0.23M, A18-49: -8%), but the network fell to third place among adults 18-49.  That left ABC in first among A18-49 courtesy original episodes of its lineup, while NBC managed to just sneak into second among A18-49 courtesy the season finales of My Name Is Earl (HH: nc, V: +3%/0.19M, A18-49: nc), The Office (HH: +4%, V: +2%/0.19M, A18-49: +5%), and E.R. (HH: -14%, V: -12%/1.12M, A18-49: -8%). Fox stayed consistent in fourth place with its gameshow lineup, while The CW saw slight gains from the week prior courtesy season finales of Smallville (HH: nc, V: -9%/0.38M, A18-49: -6%) and Supernatural (HH: +6%, V: +8%/0.21M, A18-49: nc).
