UPDATED ON 2/3/2009 AT 5:35 PM:
I’ve edited my analysis to reflect the final national numbers and have edited in the final numbers for NBC and ABC, the two networks that aired original programming for the evening.

According to final national numbers, Super Bowl XLIII on NBC drew 98.73 million viewers and a 36.7/72 rating/share among adults 18-49, making the telecast the most-watched Super Bowl of all-time, and second most-watched program of all time.  Overall, the game was up 1% or 1.28M among viewers, while down slightly among adults 18-49 from last year’s game (-2%) over last year’s numbers (97.45M viewers and a 37.5/73 A18-49 rating/share).

Meanwhile, The Office drew a series high 22.91 million viewers and an 11.0/28 rating/share among adults 18-49.  Those are impressive numbers, but it rates on the lower end of post Super Bowl shows, and is in fact the lowest rated such episode since ABC’s 2003 airing of Alias (17.36M).

Elsewhere on the evening, the only original programming came from ABC (which placed third on the evening) who aired Wipeout Bowl I: Cheerleaders vs. Couch Potatoes which managed to actually improve upon its season one finale by a healthy 20% among adults 18-49 (from a 2.0 to a 2.4 rating).  It’s performance among viewers was flat (+1%).

The non-Super Bowl winner on the evening (with the exception of The Office) was a repeat of The Mentalist on CBS.  While the show skewed older, it managed a very healthy overall audience.

Fox was fourth with repeats of Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? and animated comedy repeats, while The CW was a dead last with a repeat of Jericho and the movie Throw Momma from the Train, each of which failed to drew more than 700,000 viewers.  My full analysis follows after the jump. (more…)

The 30-sec Super Bowl spot for J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek is now online.  While short and containing several elements seen previously in other trailers/spots, there’s also a fair amount of new content including more of Kirk in a bar fight, more interaction between Kirk and McCoy and more space and Earth footage including San Francisco.  Watch the TV spot after the jump. transformershr-020209Here’s the Super Bowl spot for Michael Bay’s Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.  This is one damn impressive teaser, one of the better ones I’ve seen in some time.  Bay wasn’t kidding when he said there would be some big robots in the film. To give you a sense of the scope look how small Prime looks as he’s leaping through the air and fighting what I believe is Devastator (or perhaps just a part of Devastator?).  I’m incredibly excited for this movie and summer 2009  in general.  Watch the spot after the jump. Disney has released their Super Bowl spot for the upcoming Pixar animated feature Up.  Like most Pixar films (seriously, when was the last time they had a miss?) this one looks like it’s going to be great. Click the image above to head on over to Disney’s website and watch the clip.

Synopsis
From Disney•Pixar comes “Up,” a comedy adventure about 78-year-old balloon salesman Carl Fredricksen, who finally fulfills his lifelong dream of a great adventure when he ties thousands of balloons to his house and flies away to the wilds of South America. But he discovers all too late that his biggest nightmare has stowed away on the trip: an overly optimistic 9-year-old Wilderness Explorer named Russell. From the Academy Award®-nominated director Pete Docter (“Monsters, Inc.”), Disney•Pixar’s “Up” invites you on a hilarious journey into a lost world, with the least likely duo on Earth. “Up” will be presented in Disney Digital 3-D™ in select theaters.

Up hits conventional and 3D theaters on May 29th.

I have to admit that I was a little nervous about this movie, but you have got to hand it to Paramount.  If there is anything wrong with the movie itself, they’ve done a great job disguising it with this short, yet fairly awesome, 30-second spot.

Synopsis
Paramount Pictures and Hasbro, whose previous collaboration was the worldwide blockbuster “Transformers,” join forces with Spyglass Entertainment for another extraordinary action-adventure “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.” From the Egyptian desert to deep below the polar ice caps, the elite G.I. JOE team uses the latest in next-generation spy and military equipment to fight the corrupt arms dealer Destro and the growing threat of the mysterious Cobra organization to prevent them from plunging the world into chaos. “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.” is directed by Stephen Sommers (“The Mummy,” “The Mummy Returns”).

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra hits theaters on August 7th.

appleiphone-013109According to ZDNet, Apple is hard at work on a more powerful iPhone that could hit store shelves later this year.  The new phone, said to be about as powerful as Sony’s PlayStation Portable, will be twice as poweful as the current generation iPhone allowing it to render graphics and games, better than anything before it in the portable gaming world.

The key for the new iPhone will be users ability to download their games via Apple’s App Store, which users can access wirelessly or on their computer.

michaelbayew-71608Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen director Michael Bay has posted a message on his official site revealing that the spot that will air during tomorrow’s Super Bowl on NBC will be a teaser of the upcoming full-length teaser trailer (which will be attached to Friday the 13th on February 13th):

The Super Bowl spot is coming Sunday in the third Quarter (few minutes into the quarter slot). The spot will be online a few minutes after that – The full length teaser trailer will only be on Friday the Thirteenth. It will not hit the internet until a week later. The Teaser really only teases stuff – I’m holding so much stuff back from the final trailers because I personally hate going to movies where you have seen it all.

EW has a new image of what director Zack Snyder says is one of the first glimpses audiences will have of the film’s anti-hero, Rorschach, as he shoots a grappling gun into the Comedian’s apartment while investigating his fallen comrade’s mysterious death. Snyder also today announced a new website for his production company Cruel and Unusual Films.  Check it out at cruelfilms.com.  Here’s what Snyder told EW about the site:

“We just wanted to have a place where people could see what we’re up to,” Snyder tells EW.com exclusively about the site. “As a company, we’re into a lot of cool stuff, like aesthetic and design. The movies we make, and are making, feed a lot off of pop-culture.” The site includes a section called The Lounge, where the company — which includes producer Wesley Coller and Snyder’s wife and producing partner Deborah Snyder — list what they’re watching (the anime film Appleseed), reading (Ayn Rand’s The Fountainhead) and listening to (Allison Crow’s “Hallelujah”).

Snyder also invites artists to submit versions of the Cruel and Unusual Films logo: A rough-and-tumble anime Catholic schoolgirl called Baby Doll who’ll be the heroine of Snyder’s in-the-works project Sucker Punch. “I always thought it would be cool, like, ‘Hey, Frank Miller, you should draw a version of Baby Doll,'” Snyder says. “[Drawing her] is kind of a fun assignment, you know, for the world.”
