Here are the final national numbers:
20.6/31 HH rating/share, 36.31M viewers and a 12.1/19 A18-49 rating/share. There wasn’t much difference in the time-zone adjusted fast nationals and final nationals, but I’ve gone ahead and edited the information in the article below to reflect the changes. All numbers are based on final national data.
Good news for ABC. Sunday night’s telecast of the 81st Annual Academy Awards improved upon last year’s record low. The telecast drew 36.31 million viewers, an increase of 13% or 4.30 million over last year’s record low of 32.01 million viewers.
The program improved in the key A18-49 demo as well, garnering a 12.1 rating (+13% over last year’s 10.7 rating) as well as among households where it scored a 20.6 rating (+10% over last year’s 18.7 rating).
Earlier in the evening, the prime time Barbara Walters special drew a 7.3/12 HH rating/share, 11.55 million viewers and a 3.1/9 A18-49 rating/share.
Barbara Walters Special (2/24/2008 in parenthesis):
Households – 7.7/13 (7.3/12) [-5%]
Viewers – 11.69M (11.55M) [-1%/-0.14M]
Adults 18-49 – 3.2/9 (3.1/9) [-3%]
And leading into the Oscars was Oscars 2009 Red Carpet Special, which drew a 14.5/23 HH rating/share, 24.36M viewers and a 7.2/19 A18-49 rating/share.

Warner Brothers has been relentless of late promoting Watchmen with new clips. Instead of individual posts for each clip, I figured it’d be best to just link directly to all the clips here.
The most recent clip seen was aired during MTV’s “Spoilers” and features Silk Spectre (Malin Akerman) and Nite Owl (Patrick Wilson) putting down a prison riot. Watch it below.

Dan Aykroyd was in Boston to celebrate the opening of a new House of Blues and was asked by someone about the status of Ghostbusters 3. According to the Boston Globe, Aykroyd revealed that production may begin by late fall 2009:
“Script is commenced early summer. Hope to be in production by late fall 2009.”

IESB.net recently chatted with Watchmen director Zack Snyder about his next film, Sucker Punch, which he described as “an ‘Alice in Wonderland’ with machine guns”. Snyder says that they’ve begun casting for the R-rated film and confirmed that they’re talking to Amanda Seyfried to play one of the five lead female roles:
“I don’t know, I mean, she’s got some other obligations and we’re just trying to figure that out,” he said, adding, “I think we’re looking at, like, what I would consider a lot of great, really great girls. Because it’s all girls so it’s like, yeah.”

Instead of scaring villagers away like he used to, a reluctant Shrek now agrees to autograph pitch forks. What’s happened to this ogre’s roar? Longing for the days when he felt like a “real ogre,” Shrek is duped into signing a pact with the smooth-talking dealmaker, Rumplestiltskin. Shrek suddenly finds himself in a in a twisted, alternate version of Far Far Away, where ogres are hunted, Rumplestiltskin is king and Shrek and Fiona have never met. Now, it’s up to Shrek to undo all he’s done in the hopes of saving his friends, restoring his world and reclaiming his one True Love.
The film is scheduled to hit conventional and IMAX theaters on May 21, 2010.

While walking the red carpter at last night’s Oscars, Iron Man 2 director Jon Favreau told E! that Emily Blunt is officially out as the Black Widow in the film. Favreau said that 20th Century Fox has decided to exercise their option on the actress, and Blunt will be starring in Gulliver’s Travels instead (see related story here).
The current rumor is that Scarlett Johansson is in talks to play the role.

Warner Bros. has announced that after a re-release late last month, The Dark Knight has finally crossed $1 billion in worldwide gross. The studio made the announcement last Thursday, but did not reveal which day the movie reached the mark.
The film’s current tally sits at $1,001,176,117 ($533.2M domestically and $468.0 from foreign markets). It joins just three other film’s that have reached the mark; Titanic ($1.84B), The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King ($1.12B) and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest ($1.07B).

IGN Movies is reporting that Universal Pictures is planning to turn the TV series Battlestar Galactica into a feature film with original series creator Glen A. Larson lined up to script and produce it. The project, which Universal Pictures initially declined to comment on before ultimately denying it, would actually be based on the original BSG series that aired in 1978-1979, and NOT the currently running reboot on the SCI FI channel headed by Ron Moore.
Despite the Universal denial, IGN insists to expect an official announcement on the project in the coming weeks.

SCI FI has announced that production on the one-hour dramedy Warehouse 13 has begun. The 13-episode series (including the previously produced two-hour pilot), stars Eddie McClintock, Joanne Kelly and Saul Rubinek. It’s scheduled to premiere July 2009. Linda Hamilton has confirmed what McG first hinted at last month, that she’s in talks to do a voiceover as Sarah Connor for Terminator Salvation. Here’s what Hamilton told MTV:
“We are talking”… “I haven’t read it yet. I don’t know what direction they will go in.”
While she awaits the specifics in a script, Hamilton already knows what her role generally would be. “My contribution would be voiceover,” she said. “I would probably be very happy to loan my voice depending on what the material is. Wait and see. They’re already writing it. We’ve been negotiating it.

MTV has unveiled the logo and title for The Twilight Saga’s New Moon which hits theaters on November 20, 2009. Click the logo above for a higher res version.
Summit Entertainment has also announced a release date for the third film in the franchise, The Twilight Saga’s Eclipse (notice the consistent use of the ‘Twilight Saga’s tagline). The film will be released just seven months after ‘New Moon’ on Wednesday, June 30, 2010. The studio also released a plot synopsis for the film:
“As Seattle is ravaged by a string of mysterious killings and a malicious vampire continues her quest for revenge, Bella once again finds herself surrounded by danger. In the midst of it all, she is forced to choose between her love for Edward and her friendship with Jacob — knowing that her decision has the potential to ignite the ageless struggle between vampire and werewolf. With her graduation quickly approaching, Bella has one more decision to make: life or death.”

Capcom recently announced Dead Rising 2 would be released on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC, a departure from the original game which was released only on the 360. However, producer Keiji Inafune revealed in the official Capcom podcast that the Xbox 360 version might be a little different:
“Please expect new Dead Rising and Lost Planet titles. While they will be on multiple platforms, we are thinking about having the 360 version play out differently.”

Dead Rising 2 will be released on November 1, 2009.

Nintendo continues to lead the pack in the software and hardware sales charts for the week ending February 7th, with the company selling 234,094 Wii’s and 154,944 DS’s. The next closest system was Microsoft’s Xbox 360 which sold 92,062 units. Rounding out the rest of the list was Sony’s PSP at #4 (61,176), Sony’s PS3 at #5 (56,518) and Sony’s PS2 at #6 (28,838).
On the software side, Wii Fit was the best selling game for the Nintendo Wii followed by Wii Play and Mario Kart Wii. The 360 was paced by Left 4 Dead, Skate 2 and Call of Duty: World of War. The best selling title on the PS3 was Skate 2, Call of Duty: World at War and Afro Samurai.
