A casting notice for the lead role in Kenneth Branagh’s Thor has gone out, and according to the explanation for the role, provided by Coming Attractions, it’s fair to say many will not like it:
Male MUST BE MID-LATE 20′S and SIX FEET OR TALLER. LEAD.
Physically powerful, very handsome, occasionally egotistical, petulant, and wild. A natural warrior with a quick charming wit who must be genuinely and severely humbled before becoming the compassionate, mature hero of our film.
The physical and personal traits sound to be right on, but I don’t like that they’re looking for such a young actor.
The start date is July and the filming will conclude by September.

IESB is reporting that the character of Donald Blake has been added to the end of the script to director Kenneth Branagh’s Thor in an effort to tie the film to The Avengers which hits theaters a year after on July 15, 2011:
A reliable source tells the IESB that the character of Donald Blake has been added to the end of the script. Let me reiterate that he wasn’t there before, the script was set entirely in the land of the Norse Gods.
The introduction of the character is essential to how Marvel will tie Thor into the Avengers that is set in contemporary Tony Stark/Hulk timeframe. It explains how the actual Thor film will be set in the ancient time of the Norse Gods and how they will subsequently bring the character into a modern time with Donald Blake discovering the magical Norse hammer Mjolnir and turning into Thor.
They’re also reporting that in addition to directing, Branagh will have an acting part in film..
Thor hits theaters on July 16, 2010.

It’s been more than two months since news broke that Kenneth Branagh was Marvel’s choice to bring Thor to the big-screen and the director has been quite silent on the project. No more. While doing press for his upcoming film Valkryie, the actor/director spoke to MTV about the upcoming film:
“I am directing “Thor” or “The Mighty Thor’ as you might like to call it,” he said with a smile before clarifying what the title of the film will be. “I think it will be ‘Thor.’”
He continued excitedly, “There’s science fiction and science fact and fantasy all woven into one. It’s based on Norse legends which Marvel sort of raided in a brilliant way.
Branagh also spoke to the rumors that Kevin McKidd would be starring as Thor:
“There’s been lots of talk [about casting] — I sound like a politician — but we are too early at this stage. We’re getting the story and the visual effects together and all of that is very exciting. Someone sensational is going to play the part but it is early days.”
Thor is scheduled to hit theaters on July 16, 2010.

Marvel’s panel today at Comic-Con featured Kevin Feige From Marvel Studios, Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada and Dan Buckley from Marvel Publishing and Craig Kyle from Marvel Animation. Here are the highlights courtesy ComingSoon.net:
- Kevin Feige said that the goal is to hire filmakers and get scripts in before casting their upcoming movies.
- Feige also said that The Incredible Hulk lived up to their expectations and that the Hulk will make a return.
- Marvel doesn’t believe they’ll ever get certain other characters back due to specific contractual obligations (i.e. it’s not likely Sony and Fox would let go of Spider-Man or X-Men).
- Thor and Ant-Man are their two highest priorities over the coming year.
- Feige wasn’t able to comment about whether Jon Favreau was officially signed on to direct Iron Man 2.
- Dr. Doom won’t be in the Avengers movie because he’s part of the 20th Century Fox contract with Marvel. He wouldn’t comment about whether he’d be apart of a future sequel.
- He confirmed that a script exists for a Silver Surfer movie, but Feige said he believes Fox is going to wait and see how X-Men Origins: Wolverine does before commiting.
- Marvel has no plans to license out any other characters that haven’t already been licensed out.
