mickeyrourke-013109A little bit of Mickey Rourke Iron Man and Wrestlemania news to report.

It looks like he will not, unfortunately, be in Iron Man 2.  The actor was at last night’s Domenico Vacca show at Bryant Park and revealed that his role as a villain in Iron Man 2 is likely not going to happen: “Right now, we’re not doing Iron Man 2,” Rourke said. Disappointing.  That’s the first word that comes to mind.  Rourke was absolutely terrific in The Wrestler (and is hopefully a lock for that Oscar this Sunday) and would no doubt be amazing as a turn as a villain in Iron Man 2. In other, better news, wrestling fans will be happy to learn that his canceled appearance at the upcoming WrestleMania 25 event wasn’t so canceled after all:

“We’re gonna go in support. Vince McMahon, Roddy Piper, and Rick Flair have been such a part of the movie … So whatever support I can give back to all those people from WWE, I’m gonna do that.”

scarlettjohansson-021609A couple weeks back it was revealed that due to a scheduling conflict, Emily Blunt may have to step down from playing the Black Widow in Iron Man 2.  Now Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Scarlett Johansson is in talks to replace Blunt as the Russian superspy Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow.

Marvel will not confirm, but sources around Hollywood say Johansson has indeed met with the filmmakers and is interested in taking the role of Russian superspy Natasha Romanoff, who doubles as Black Widow. Blunt’s reps are still trying to make both projects work, but Gulliver’s is further along, with a start date of April 15. Iron Man 2 still doesn’t have a shooting script and a start date has not yet been determined.

ironmansega-020309SEGA has announced that they are continuing their existing partnership with Marvel Entertainment and will release a game based on the upcoming 2010 film Iron Man 2.  The video game will come out in 2010 alongside the film. Considering the quality of most film-based video games, I won’t get my hopes up.  The full press release follows after the jump. (more…)

emilyblunt-011409Variety is reporting that Emily Blunt has emerged as the frontrunner to play the role of Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow in the sequel to Iron Man.

Marvel would not comment on the Black Widow casting.  Iron Man 2, directed by Jon Favreau and written by Justin Theroux, begins production this spring and will hit theaters on May 7, 2010.

Howard Suprised by “Iron Man 2” Re-Casting October 26, 2008 9:55 pm

When it was reported that Don Cheadle was signed to replace Terence Howard in Iron Man 2, I doubt I was the only one surprised by the move.  The assumption on the net was that Marvel Studios had a falling out with the actor over salary issues.  Howard was asked about the re-casting on NPR, and here’s how he explained it:

“Yeah, I found that out, too,” said Howard. “It was the surprise of a lifetime. There was no explanation. Just…up and vanished. I read something in the trades implicating that it was about money or something. But apparently the contracts that we write and sign aren’t worth the paper that they’re printed on, sometimes. Promises aren’t kept, and good faith negotiations aren’t always held up. Even friendships, people you support…”

I honestly can’t fault Howard for seeking a better contract given the success of the first film.  Oh well, let’s just hope it all pans out for the best with Cheadle, who is obviously a great actor.

Iron Man 2 director Jon Favreau told the Los Angeles Times that work has begun on the sequel:

I just talked to Jon Favreau a bit ago, and he said that while there hasn’t been an formal announcement on the sequel to “Iron Man,” he’s begun developing it. “We’re working on it now,” he said, “which hasn’t been officially announced. It will be released in 2010.”

Iron Man has grossed over $570M worldwide and is currently the year’s second highest-grossing film at $317.15M.  The sequel will hit theaters on April 30, 2010.  Justin Theroux (Tropic Thunder) is writing the script, while Robert Downey Jr. will return as Iron Man/Tony Stark and co-stars Gwyneth Paltrow and Terrence Howard are expected to return.

Although Marvel Studios’ Iron Man was a major success this summer (with over $560 million in worldwide box office and still climbing), the studio has decided to go in another direction with the screenplay.  Marvel Studios has announced that they’ve hired actor/filmmaker Justin Theroux to pen the sequel.

Jon Favreau will be returning to direct the sequel to Iron ManThough I personally didn’t think it was ever really in doubt, a while back it was being reported that Marvel was “lowballing” Favreau in their offer for him to direct a sequel.  Eventually, it was learned that Marvel Studios offerered Favreau a contract that was “definitely” larger than his wage for the first film.  Well, it looks like all is now well.

Here’s what Nikki Finke, who has the exclusive, posted over at her site Deadline Hollywood Daily:

It’s not officially announced yet, but I’m told that Marvel Studios and Iron Man director Jon Favreau have reached a deal for him to helm the sequel, due out in 2010. (Robert Downey Jr had a sequel clause in his contract so he’s on board.)

Iron Man 2 is scheduled to hit theaters on April 30, 2010.
