Universal’s I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry pulled in $34.23 million from 3,495 theaters, holding off last week’s #1 film Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix which dropped a significant 57.8% in its second week as it grossed $32.51 million from 4,285 theaters and fellow newcomer Hairspray which opened large on Friday before dipping on Saturday and Sunday, taking in $27.48 million from 3,121 theaters.
Year-to-year, the box office top 10 was up by a solid 4.5%

Universal’s I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry opened well with $12.4 million on Friday from 3,495 theaters based on estimates. It was just ahead of New Line’s Hairspray which was a close second with $11.2 million from 3,121, leaving
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix in third place with a lower than expected $10.12 million from 4,285 theaters. All of this is pointing to what will turn out to be a close three-way race on top. (more…)

In an exclusive chat with IGN, Matt Damon told the site that he’s not playing Kirk in Star Trek XI and went on to say that JJ Abrams is looking for an actor in his 20s to play Kirk in the film.

Variety is reporting an interesting bit of casting news on Columbia’s The Green Hornet. The studio has tapped Seth Rogen (Knocked Up) to write and produce and likely star in the action film, which dates back to the 1930s, where it began its life as a radio serial (1936-1952).

20th Century Fox has pulled out of this years Comic-Con event in San Diego. The announcement was made by the studio’s vice president of national publicity, who told the LA Times that “the material wasn’t ready and we only want to go out when we can put our best foot forward.”

The CW has released their 2007 fall schedule, announcing premiere dates for most all of their series, save the few they are holding until mid-season. The network also announced that they’ve reached a deal with Tyra Banks that will keep the America’s Next Top Model on the air through the 2009-10 season.

ABC announced that they are shifting their Monday and Tuesday night lineups effective August 6. Additionally, the network has ordered an additional 13 episodes of Just for Laughs.

20th Century Fox has announced that they’ve selected relatively unknown Gavin Hood (Tsotsi) as director for the upcoming X-Men spin-off film Wolverine. The film, starring Hugh Jackman, will be directed from a script penned by David Benioff, and is the first of at least two scheduled X-Men spin-off’s, the other being Magneto.
