Showtime Renews “Dexter” for Two Seasons October 27, 2008 12:08 am

Showtime has announced that they have renewed its hit drama series Dexter, for not just one year, but two more seasons consisting of 12 episodes each.

Dexter’s third season finale airs on Showtime this December 14th, while production on season four will begin in spring 2009.

In an interview with MTV News, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige revealed that Dr. Strange could possibiliy be one of the comic properties that the studio will be exploring after The Avengers hits theaters:

“Very much so,” Feige said. “I’d say in the next year, year and a half, as we start putting together our film slate for 2012 and 2013, I would not be shocked if we saw Dr. Strange on those lists. I love the idea of taping into the magical realm of the Marvel Universe, which is fairly significant and hasn’t yet seen life on screen. It’s something I’m very, very interested in.”

EliteXC Saturday Night Fights is coming to an end. The show had aired three installments on CBS, with the most recent airing on October 4th and had plans to air one more match, but Pro Elite, the company that ran the program, shut down for unspecified reasons.

It’s the season of surprising pickups. Following up on Fox’s somewhat surprising full-season order of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, NBC has gone ahead and ordered the back-nine of Knight Rider, clearing the series to air a full season of 22 episodes.

It’s the first freshman fall NBC series to be ordered to a full season, joining CBS’s The Mentalist, Fox’s Fringe and the CW’s 90210.

Amy Acker, co-star of Joss Whedon’s upcoming Fox series Dollhouse, told SCI FI Wire that all the publicity surrounding the recent production shut down was blown out of proportion:

“You know, we did take a little break,” Acker said in an interview earlier this month. “And I feel like it’s coming back, and everyone is just excited to be there. The first show that came back was a Steve DeKnight show; he was directing it, and it’s just really, really great. I think we just kind of had that time, because it doesn’t air until January.”

“Instead of rushing to make episodes, they thought, ‘Well, we’ve already made four, and they’re all going to be done before the first one airs,’” Acker said. “So we have the luxury to take the time and make them the way they want them.”

Seth Rogen told Collider that despite the rumors circulating around the internet, he has not yet been contacted about being part of Ghostbusters 3. However, that’s probably a good thing because Rogen certainly doesn’t seem all that interesting in being part of the project:

“It’s hard to imagine that would be good, isn’t it?” asks Rogen. “I mean just as a movie fan I am the first guy to be skeptical of that. It sounds like a terrible idea when you first hear it. At first hearing it sounds like the worst idea ever. I dunno. Maybe. I mean, that would have to be one mutherfucking good script.”

In an interview with the Sunday Sun, director Paul W.S. Anderson revealed that after he finishes writing “an adaptation of the Long Good Friday right now, set in present-day Miami. Then I will probably write Resident Evil 4.”

Although there hasn’t been any talk out of Sony about another installment in this video game-to-film franchise, it’s not entirely all that surprising. The franchise has in fact been mildly successful at the box office, gaining ground with each feature:

Resident Evil ($102.4 million worldwide)
Resident Evil: Apocalypse ($129.4 million worldwide)
Resident Evil: Extinction ($147.7 million worldwide)

Despite only average ratings, Fox has decided to give a full season order to its freshman sci-fi drama series Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. The back-nine order brings the show to a full 22 episodes this season, eight more than aired in last year’s strike-shortened season.

The show’s most-recent episode drew 5.7 million viewers and had a 2.3/6 rating/share among the coveted A18-49 demo. The network had recently ordered two additional scripts from producers.

“Watchmen” Ending Changed + New Poster October 26, 2008 10:35 pm

Fans who got a chance to see the Watchmen test screening last week are starting to let loose with their thoughts (read some here), and while most of the buzz is high, some are a little concerned over how Zack Snyder’s ending varies from the one in the graphic novel. It is indeed true, and Kevin Smith, who has seen the film twice, confirmed it in an interview with Collider:

“It’s a little different. While it is a slight departure, it actually makes sense in the context of the story because it brings the characters back into it. It kind of makes the movie more about them by the end of it because of the switch they made. I would never say that Alan Moore fucked it up or something. I love the ending of the Watchmen comic book, but I think this ending works just as well.”

Meh, doesn’t sound like such a big deal. Directors/writers/whatever tend to like to changes things, make them their own, if you will. As long as the film turns out good, I have no problem with Snyder changing things up a bit.

Howard Suprised by “Iron Man 2” Re-Casting October 26, 2008 9:55 pm

When it was reported that Don Cheadle was signed to replace Terence Howard in Iron Man 2, I doubt I was the only one surprised by the move. The assumption on the net was that Marvel Studios had a falling out with the actor over salary issues. Howard was asked about the re-casting on NPR, and here’s how he explained it:

“Yeah, I found that out, too,” said Howard. “It was the surprise of a lifetime. There was no explanation. Just…up and vanished. I read something in the trades implicating that it was about money or something. But apparently the contracts that we write and sign aren’t worth the paper that they’re printed on, sometimes. Promises aren’t kept, and good faith negotiations aren’t always held up. Even friendships, people you support…”

I honestly can’t fault Howard for seeking a better contract given the success of the first film. Oh well, let’s just hope it all pans out for the best with Cheadle, who is obviously a great actor.

While it’s not quite confirmed yet, AICN is confirming the rumor that had Brett Ratner directing Lionsgates $100 million R-rated feature Conan. I know most people don’t have much of a positive view of Ratner, but there is at least some good news to report. AICN further reports that Outlander scribes Dirk Blackman and Howard McCain will not be making a remake or a sequel, but instead will be starting over from original stories.

Star Trek was featured in last week’s issue of Entertainment Weekly, including a nice cover photo Kirk (Chris Pine) and Spock (Zachary Quinto) which you can check out on the right. Director J.J. Abrams told the magazine that they “weren’t making a movie for fans of Star Trek,” he said. ”We were making a movie for fans of movies.” More after the jump.
