MGM (Weinstein)’s Halloween scared audiences into the box office over the weekend, debuting in first place with a strong $26.36 million from 3,472 theaters. The Rob Zombie directed horror film, a pseudo remake of the 1978 John Carpenter classic, now holds the record for biggest opening in the series, ahead of 1998’s Halloween H20 ($16.19 million). Though critics and fans don’t seem enamored with the quality of the film, it certainly has done well at the box office, a fact I’m sure MGM (Weinstein) is quite pleased with.

It also now holds the record for biggest Labor Day weekend (Labor Day numbers are included below).

Year-to-year the top 10 box office was up by 17.2%.

Holdovers held off the new releases this weekend, with the top three paced by Superbad, which remained in first place for the second weekend. The hilarious comedy took in $18.04 million from 2,948 theaters (down 45.4%) and has grossed $68.62 million through 10 days of release. That’s more than three times the film’s budget ($20 million).

Superbad is the first film since Pirates of the Caribbean to hold the top spot for two weeks in a row.

Second place went to The Bourne Ultimatum. ‘Bourne’ continues to perform exceptionally well, dipping only 37.2% and improving one spot with $12.47 million from 3,778 theaters.

Year-to-year the top 10 box office was up by 10.3%.

New Line Cinema’s Rush Hour 3 opened with a strong (though lower than the studio estimates) $49.1 million from 3,778 theaters. Though it’s an impressive tally, and well above the average mark for most comedies, it fell quite short of the $67.41 million taken in by 2001’s Rush Hour 2. Another thing hurting the films otherwise strong opening weekend, is its high budget of $140 million.

That left The Bourne Ultimatum in second place for the weekend with a fairly strong holdover performance from last weekend’s opening. The film took in $32.88 million from 3,686 theaters (+26), off 52.5%.

Year-to-year the top 10 box office was up by 28.9%.

Fox’s The Simpsons Movie did better than anyone could have possibly expected, pulling in an amazing $74.04 million from 3,922 theaters. The tally makes the movie the new record holder for best opening for a non-CGI animated film, eclipsing the $40.89 million taken in by 1994’s The Lion King. In terms of films adapted from a television show, it passed up Mission Impossible II, which had an opening of $57.85 million back in 2000.

Update: As you can see from the revised numbers, Fox underestimated the weekend gross of “The Simpsons Movie” as actuals increased by 3% or $2.19 million.

In second place for the weekend was last week’s #1 film, I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry which performed well with a drop of only 44.1% as it took in $19.13 million from 3,501 theaters ($71.68 million through 15 days of release).

Year-to-year, the box office top 10 was up a whopping 55.7%
