Laurence Fishburne is in talks to replace William Petersen as the lead star in CBS’s veteran crime drama CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Sources say that Fishburne is being heavily courted to play a new character, described as a doctor/scientist outsider to the CSI unit who has the same genetic profile as a serial killer but hasn’t previously acted on any homicidal impulses.

THR further notes that Fishburne had been mentioned as one of the CSI producers’ top choices for the role, along with John Malkovich and Kurt Russell.

“Stargate Atlantis” to Return in the Fall August 6, 2008 9:11 am

Posted by Rosario T. Calabria in News, Sci Fi, Stargate Atlantis, Television.

Some good news for Stargate Atlantis fans.  In past seasons, its been common practice for SCI FI to air its original series in two batches of 10 episodes.  That looks to be changing this season as it appears Stargate Atlantis will be returning with its last 10 episodes of season five in the fall, not next season as originally expected.  The Futon Critic reports that after its 10th episode airs on September 26th at 10pm, the show will take a one-week break (for the premiere of two-hour premiere of Sanctuary on October 3rd from 9-11pm) and then return the following week in a new time slot: 9pm.

Through three weeks (we don’t yet have the numbers for the fourth episode of the season that aired this past Friday) Stargate Atlantis has averaged a 1.2 household rating.  That’s slightly above what the fourth season averaged through episodes (1.1 household rating).

A new episode of Stargate Atlantis airs this Friday on SCI FI at 10pm.

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger told the Los Angeles Times that he’s still not sold on Terminator Salvation, despite given a private screening of the comic-con reel by the movie’s producers:

“I’ve seen very little footage so I don’t really have a feel for it. I hope they do well, and I hope it is a huge hit. I do hope it creates a spectacle on the screen. That is what James Cameron created,” Arnold said. “I still don’t know how it will play out with this one. They showed me some footage, but I don’t have a feel for the movie. I didn’t see enough. I wasn’t sure who the Terminator was. I don’t know if there is one or if he’s the star or the hero. These are the things that determine the success and how the strong the movie will be.”

Terminator Salvation hits theaters on May 22, 2009.

New Record for “The Dark Knight” August 6, 2008 6:30 am

Posted by Rosario T. Calabria in Box Office, Movies, The Dark Knight.
add a comment

The Dark Knight broke yet another record on Monday, fastest movie to $400M. The film accomplished the feat in just 18 days (resting at $400,038,494 by the end of Monday), destroying the prior record held by Shrek 2 which took 43 days to hit the mark.

Additionally, The Dark Knight has added $203.7M from overseas markets pushing its worldwide gross to $603.74M with several key markets yet to open.

My revised estimate for the film’s total domestic gross now stands between $493M and $552M, which would place it second all time ahead of Star Wars ($461M), but below the all-time domestic grosser Titanic ($600.79M). We’ll know in the coming weeks if The Dark Knight truly has the legs to beat Titanic.

It currently ranks as the #8 highest-grossing film of all time.  Ahead of #9 Revenge of the Sith ($380.27M) and slightly below #7 Spider-Man ($403.71M) which it should pass on Tuesday.  Click here to check out the entire list.

Surprising no one, Fox has renewed its hit summer reality series So You Think You Can Dance? for a fifth season.  In announcing the renewal, Fox’s President of Alternative Entertainment, Mike Darnell said, “We’re delighted to have DANCE back for a fifth season next year. FOX is very lucky to have television’s preeminent performance competitions in AMERICAN IDOL and SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE, and it’s no coincidence that creator and executive producer Simon Fuller and executive producer and judge Nigel Lythgoe have been a part of both these successes.”  The full press release follows after the jump.

“The Dark Knight” Stays In Front in Third Week August 4, 2008 6:13 pm

Posted by Rosario T. Calabria in Movies.

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor got off to a strong start on Friday with $15.2M, a good deal ahead of The Dark Knight ($12.7M), but it fell behind on Saturday and Sunday en route to a $40.56M weekend, just below the $42.66M taken in by first place finisher The Dark Knight.

The Mummy’s box office take over the weekend compares favorably with the first film in the franchise which took in $43.37M in its first weekend back in 1999, but is well below what The Mummy II drew in 2001 ($68.14M).  Industry expections were for the film to take in somewhere in the neighborhood of $45-50M so it slightly underperformed.

Moving back to The Dark Knight, this is the film’s third consecutive weekend at #1and its new domestic cume is now $393.75M, putting it in eighth place on the all-time domestic gross list.  Though Titanic’s domestic record of $600.79M looks now to be safe, second place holder Star Wars with $461M will likely go down. My current estimate has The Dark Knight ending its box office run somewhere between $486-539M.  I’ll update those totals as the weeks go on.

“Swingtown” Down More Than 20% In New Friday Time Slot August 1, 2008 2:55 pm

Posted by Rosario T. Calabria in Broadcast TV Ratings, CBS, Flashpoint, Nielsen TV Ratings, Swingtown, Television.
add a comment

Whereas Flashpoint was successful in its new Thursday night time slot, and the results were even stronger for its second airing last night, the same can’t be said for Swingtown.

Premiering in its new Friday night time slot last week, Swingtown drew the following ratings: 2.9/6 HH rating/share, 4.20M viewers, 1.4/5 A18-49 rating/share.  That was a decline of 26% among households, 1.12M/21% among viewers and 12.5% among adults 18-49 from its last aired episode (3.9/7 HH rating/share, 5.32M viewers, 1.6/5 A18-49 rating/share on Thursday, July 17th).

Additionally, it hurt the time slot signficantly, especially among total audience where is was down by 37% among households and 41%/2.92M among viewers from what Flashpoint posted in the same time slot the week prior (4.6/9 HH rating/share, 7.12M viewers, 1.5/5 A18-49 rating/share).  The only category it did okay in (with relation to how Flashpoint fared) was among adults 18-49, where it was off just 7% from what Flashpoint posted.  However, that rating was considered very low for Flashpoint (hence the switch to Thursday nights’), so it’s really not much of a positive.

Through eight aired episodes (seven on Thursday and one on Friday), Swingtown has averaged a 4.1 HH rating, 5.82M viewers and a 1.9 A18-49 rating.

Its second episode in its new time slot airs this evening.  Check back tomorrow for a look at how it fared and an overall analysis of the Thursday/Friday Swingtown/Flashpoint swap.

A stronger second week in its new time slot for Flashpoint helped CBS finish in first place last night among households and viewers.

Meanwhile, Fox still took first place among adults 18-49, but the return of Don’t Forget the Lyrics! caused the network to slip some among viewers and households, falling to second place in both categories, down one spot from the week prior.
