CBS’s coverage of the first round of the NCAA Tournament kept the network in first place.  Year-to-year declines were minimized (though that could change when finals are released) at 1.13 million or 12% among viewers and 3% among adults 18-49 (compared against the 8:00-11:00 p.m. time period last year).

ABC’s Dancing With the Stars went up against Fox’s American Idol, with AI, predictably, coming out on top.

The series premiere of Miss Guided on ABC tuned in mixed results. It’s overall audience was fairly solid (just 10,000 viewers shy of 10 million), but it’s retention numbers from its Dancing With the Stars lead-in could have been much better (60% among viewers and 72% among adults 18-49).

Elsehwere on the evening The Biggest Loser on NBC held steady in the face of the increased competition and The CW’s One Tree Hill rebounded nicely from last week’s poor showing, growing by 17% among viewers and 27% among adults 18-49.

ABC’s Dancing With the Stars returned to give ABC a big boost, drawing an audience nearly identical to the series’ last new season premieres, and giving the network a comfortable first place finish among total viewership and adults 18-49.

CBS, however, managed to get a good chunk of the viewing audience last night thanks to impressive numbers (especially among adults 18-49) from its returning comedy series’ The Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother and Two and a Half Men (which helped to boost its lead-out The New Adventures of Old Christine by a an impressive 1.83 million or 19% among viewers and 26% among adults 18-49).

Elsewhere on the evening, NBC dropped to third place, though the performance of its lineup was mostly on par with the week prior, with the exception of My Dad Is Better Than Your Dad which sank by 2.13 million or 31% among viewers and 29% among adults 18-49.

On Fox, Canterbury Law lost a significant portion of its already low series premiere numbers from the week prior, but New Amsterdam was less affected.

And lastly, The CW’s new season of Pussycat Dolls Presents continues to prove that the series was just a one-hit wonder, as it failed to attract much more than 1.5 million viewers.

CBS led a lowly viewed evening, which saw the series premiere of Fox’s The Return of Jezebel James draw minuscule numbers, debuting with just a little over 3 million viewers and just a 1.0 rating among adults 18-49.

ABC’s Lost won the night among the key A18-49 demographic, but it wasn’t enough to hold off CBS, which was the nights most-watched network among households, viewers and adults 18-49, overall.

With American Idol not airing, the majority of viewers migrated to CBS, which saw its 8:00-10:00 time period (which included the nights most-watched program Survivor) increase by 10% among viewers and 6% among adults 18-49.

NBC’s night was on par with prior performances, while Fox saw solid ratings out of its two returning competition series’ Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? and Don’t Forget the Lyrics!, enough to put the network in second place for the evening among total audience.

Over on The CW, Smallville returned after a three week hiatus stronger than where it left off, while Reaper premiered in its new time slot (after a three month break) and had no loss of viewership. In fact, despite the series’ viewership still under 3 million viewers, it increased over its last newly aired episode by 7% among viewers.

Retention for Reaper out of Smallville was 71% among households, 74% among viewers and 75% among adults 18-49. That’s only slightly lower than Supernatural’s most recent retention figures: 75%, 81% and 80% respectively.

Considering the long layoff and the new time slot, this is an okay performance for Reaper.

Fox easily won another Wednesday night thanks to a solid performance by The Moment of Truth, and the always reliable American Idol.

Elsewhere on the evening, NBC took an unexpected second place, thanks to strong outings from its lead-off series Deal or No Deal and episodes of Law & Order: Criminal Intent and Law & Order.

The CW’s once reliable America’s Next Top Model continues to draw below-average crowds, something the struggling network simply can’t afford to happen.

CBS, with a mostly repeat filled lineup, managed to take a strong first place finish on the evening.

Elsewhere on the evening, NBC secured a second place finish with solid outings from Deal or No Deal and Medium.

On Fox, the series premiere of Canterbury’s Law got off to a poor start with the key A18-49 demo, with the series failing to crack a 2.0 (receiving only a 1.7 in the demo).  Meanwhile, the time slot premiere of New Amsterdam (the third episode of the series) managed to hold on nicely to its most recently aired episode last Thursday.

Rounding out the rest of the evening, ABC’s October Road ended its season on a low, as it was off by nearly 50% among viewers and over 50% among adults 18-49 from last season’s finale, while The CW’s Pussycat Dolls Present: Girlicious continues to fare poorly.

Though week two of new series’ Oprah’s Big Give and Here Come The Newlyweds were off considerably from their series premiere numbers (especially Oprah’s Big Give, which was off by 3.85 million or 25% among viewers and 23% among adults 18-49) ABC still managed to easily grab a Sunday night win across all three marks.

Price is Right continues to draw strong ratings, as the program (the nights most-watched) led CBS to win among households and viewers.

NBC, however, managed to just do good enough to place first for the evening among adults 18-49, courtesy a two-hour edition of Dateline.

Elsewhere on the evening, The CW’s soon to be departing Smackdown managed some of its strongest ratings, drawing over 5 million viewers.

American Idol carried Fox to yet another Thursday night victory, but New Amsterdam, in its second episode, fell by 2.9 million or 22% among viewers and 20% among adults 18-49. Retention was also quite weak at only 40% among viewers and 38% among adults 18-49.

Total audience remains relatively solid (over 10 million viewers), so we’ll see how the show fares in its third outing in its new time slot this upcoming Monday.

Elsewhere on the evening, Survivor and repeats of CSI and Without a Trace kept CBS in its now familiar and solid second place, while ABC held off NBC for third place among total viewership, and was second among adults 18-49 thanks to a consistent performance by Lost.

ABC’s 20/20 special on the Royal Family lifted the network to first place on the evening among households and viewers, despite the poor performance from lead-out October Road.

Fox, however, managed to tie with ABC among adults 18-49 thanks to two back-to-back episodes of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, including the first season finale.

Elsewhere on the evening, NBC placed third with its combination of reality (My Dad Is Better Than Your Dad and Deal or No Deal) and Medium.

CBS took third, while The CW’s new edition of The Pussycat Dolls Present continues to perform poorly, leaving that network in a very distant last place.

Oprah’s Big Give powered ABC to an easy Sunday night victory among total audience and adults 18-49. The series got off a terrific start, drawing in more than 15 million viewers (first place for the evening) and a 5.3 A18-49 rating (also first for the evening).

Fox trailed in second place with its coverage of NASCAR, and its usual mix of comedies, drawing a solid adult 18-49 audience, just narrowly trailing ABC in that demo.

Elsewhere on the evening, CBS remained on par with prior Sunday’s, as the re-purposed episodes of Dexter continue to do well closing out the evening for the network.

Though well back in fourth place on the evening, NBC was relatively competitive, trailing third place CBS only minimally.

The CW, meanwhile, saw only a minimal increase in viewership, with its slightly tweaked lineup that included the return of comedies Everybody Hates Chris and Aliens in America.

CBS carried the evening with another strong performance by Price is Right, which was the nights most watched program among households and viewers, while Fox was a competitive second place thanks to repeats of Bones and House.

Elsewhere on the evening, the second week of Amne$ia fared poorly, dipping by 31% among viewers and 42% among adults 18-49, however, NBC’s evening was saved somewhat by better than average performances for two editions of Dateline.

ABC and The CW trailed in fourth and fifth, respectively.

American Idol’s second elimination episode improved upon last week’s episode by 11% among households and 7% among adults 18-49. The improvement also translated to Don’t Forget The Lyrics (+17% among viewers and +8% among adults 18-49).

Meanwhile ABC’s Lost, though off from double-digits compared to last week, was still the night’s most-watched scripted program, and the overall second most-watched series among adults 18-49.

Fox continues to roll over the competition, with another strong performance by American Idol, which gave a good boost to returning comedy Back to You. Back to You grew by 5.02 million or 69% among viewers and 80% among adults 18-49 from its last newly aired episode back in November of last year, posting series highs.

Elsewhere on the evening, week three of the new season of Jericho managed to register a much needed boost, improving week-to-week by 1.04 million or 18% among viewers and 10% among adults 18-49.

Overall viewership, however, remains low at under 7 million.

In series premiere news, NBC’s MySpace.com series Quarterlife flopped with less than 4 million viewers, and retention from its lead-in at a very weak 48% among households and 52% among adults 18-49.

The CW’s One Tree Hill continues to motor along with solid ratings, growing by 11% among households and 8% among adults 18-49.

ABC’s Raisin in the Sun film gave the network a strong first place finish on the evening, with a consistent half-hour to half-hour performance through 11:00.

NBC meanwhile was a respectable second place on the evening thanks to another strong outing from Deal or No Deal, the nights most-watched series.

Elsewhere on the evening, despite coming no where close to the numbers it was getting post-American Idol, The Moment of Truth did fill in nicely for the departed Prison Break, however at 9:00 ‘Terminator’ hit another series low. I sure hope FOX finds a way to keep the show for another season, because I surely am enjoying it and would hate to see it last for only one season. It still performs well among the key A18-49 demo, so it’s not all bad.

The CW meanwhile languished in a now familiar last place, as the new edition of Pussycat Dolls Present failed to crack 2 million viewers, well below last season’s numbers. (more…)

ABC’s coverage of the 80th Annual Academy Awards led the network to an easy win on Sunday night, but year-to-year, the awards show was off by a disappointing 8.16 million or 20% among viewers and 24% among adults 18-49 (click here for a list of winners).

Elsewhere on the evening, Fox was the only major net to program effectively, with its two-hours of NASCAR coverage and repeats of The Simpsons putting the network in a solid second place finish for the evening.

CBS finished in third place for the evening, with Big Brother continuing to perform poorly, while another re-purposed episode of the Showtime hit Dexter showed promise in its second week, growing from its lead-in among adults 18-49. (more…)

A special presentation of Price is Right (the night’s most-watched program) pushed CBS to the front of the pack on Friday night among households and viewers, but strong repeat numbers for Bones and House on FOX put that network in front among adults 18-49.

Meanwhile, the series premiere of Amne$ia on NBC got off to an okay start, holding steady from its 1 vs. 100 lead-in among households and viewers and growing by 14% among adults 18-49.

ABC’s night was salvaged by solid numbers from two episodes of 20/20.
