elmstreetfreddykrueger-030509Warner Bros. and New Line have set an April 16, 2010 release date for the upcoming horror remake A Nightmare on Elm Street.

The project is based on a script by Wesley Strick and will be directed by music-video turned film director Samuel Bayer. At the moment, competition isn’t too crowded for that date, with just two other wide releases set: Weinstein’s Nerveracker and Lionsgate’s animated film Alpha and Omega.

Heroes Likely Returning for a Fourth Season March 5, 2009 10:59 pm

heroes-121708NBC entertainment president Angela Bomstad tells THR that Heroes is not “on the bubble”, despite series low ratings, and will be renewed for a fourth season of 18-20 episodes.

That would be a smaller full-season order than usual for network television (usually 22-26 episodes).

Despite the low ratings — which I’ll address in an upcoming post (by the end of the weekend) — the show has one thing still going for it: international appeal.  Bromstad said that she experienced the drama’s global popularity first-hand in her previous NBC post, heading the network’s international efforts:

“Every single place you go has heard about ‘Heroes’ — whether you’re in China or Japan or Russia,” she said. “And to me, that is global content.”

Despite Bromstad’s confidence that the show will be renewed, nothing is official until it’s official, but apparently NBC is not deterred by the current ratings.  The THR article also notes that the network has privately discussed setting a series end date for Heroes, but if such a move were to be made, they wouldn’t want next season to be the conclusion.

OZYMANDIAS

Adrian Veidt, acclaimed as “The World’s Smartest Man,” was inspired by the life of Alexander the Great to take on the costumed identity of Ozymandias. Having trained his body to athletic perfection, he operated for only a few years before retiring, revealing his secret identity publicly, and building a financial empire based around his past as a costumed hero. Determined to do true good in the world, he is one of the few vigilantes apparently free from psychological scars from his years fighting crime.

zacksnyder-030409With just a few days until the release of Watchmen, Zack Snyder is already lining up talent for an all-female cast for his next project, Sucker Punch.

THR reports that Amanda Seyfried is in negotiations to topline the project, while Vanessa Hudgens, Abbie Cornish, Evan Rachel Wood and Emma Stone are all in talks to star in the action fantasy.  According to THRSucker Punch is set in the 1950s and follows a girl who is confined to a mental institution by her stepfather, who intends to have her lobotomized in five days. While there, she imagines an alternative reality to hide her from the pain, and in that world, she begins planning her escape, needing to steal five objects to help get her out before she is deflowered by a vile man.

Snyder, who will direct, also co-wrote the script with Steve Shibuya and describes the fantasy world as “‘Alice in Wonderland’ with machine guns.”

Snyder will be producing the project with his Cruel & Unusual Films partner and wife Deborah Snyder.

latenightwithjimmyfallon-030309Jimmy Fallon’s return to late-night TV drew strong ratings last night.  The Monday night debut of Late Night With Jimmy Fallon drew a 2.3/8 HH rating/share in metered-market households.  That’s the highest rating for the franchise since January 2006.

In terms of previous performances, it was up 35% over the time slot’s previous season-to-date average (1.7 rating) and Fallon’s 55% retention from his Leno lead-in was slightly better than the 46% average lead-in for the season-to-date.

Also important, Fallon out-rated all his competition, including CBS’s Ferguson (1.7) and he beat Kimmel in the 12:30am head-to-head matchup (2.7 vs. 2.3 for Kimmel).

lifeonmars-030209ABC has notified the producers of Life on Mars that they won’t be ordering any additional episodes beyond the 17 currently in the works for the season, effectively canceling the show, reports TV Week. While the news will certainly disappoint fans, the early decision by ABC (who could have waited until as late as May) means that the producers will be able to write and film a worthy ending to the series.

Production is actually expected to continue for at least a few more weeks and the season finale is expected to air no later than early April.

“We felt it was the right thing to do for the producers and the fans and creatively,” ABC Entertainment Group President Steve McPherson said.

astroboy-1-020409Summit Entertainment, the studio behind Astro Boy, was on hand at WonderCon 2009 to debut a new clip from the film.  Here’s the description of it, courtesy SCI FI Wire:

The clip began with Astro Boy falling (apparently out a window), plummeting quickly towards earth. As he falls, flames shoot out of his feet. He has a bit of difficulty adjusting to his new power, but quickly masters it (it will remind you of the scene from Iron Man when he first tries out his suit). He flies all over town, the flames from his feet cooking an underdone steak at a restaurant. As he bursts through the clouds (in a scene that recalls another superhero film about a man in a cape) and revels in his new ability, he says, “Wow! This is cool! I have to show Dad.”

Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins

Here are some highlights from the WonderCon 2009 panel for Terminator Salvation, courtesy io9AICN, ComingSoon.net and /Film.  Director McG led the panel discussion and premiered two new clips and trailer for the film.  Here’s a description of the trailer, courtesy io9:

You see some machines, and then a Terminator skull, and the word “2018.” John Connor’s voice says: “We’ve been fighting a long time. We’re outnumbered by machines. Humans have a strength that cannot be measured. This is John Connor. If you’re listening to this, you are the resistance.” During all this, there are postapocalyptic scenes of nastiness, including people penned up in huge enclosures, and Connor talking on the radio and shooting a skeletal T-600 under his crashed helicopter, with people jumping out of the helicopter behind him. “Something has changed,” says Connor as a Harvester rips an old lady out of a gas station through a hole in the roof. Skynet is “taking human prisoners, and replicating human tissue.”

Then there’s a sequence in the trailer which deals with Marcus Wright, who’s clearly revealed to be a machine. Marcus is dragged into the rebels’ headquarters, and Bryce Dallas Howard says, “Let’s see what we’ve got here.” They examine Marcus, realize he’s part metal, and then Common bashes Marcus in the head (we see the head-bashing from Marcus’ point of view.) “This thing is something we’ve never seen before.” And then John Connor is looking at a chained-up Marcus, who says “My name is Marcus Wright.” “You think you’re human,” Connor says. “I am human,” Marcus insists. And then Connor loosens the chains on Marcus’ head enough to let him look down and see his own metal body. Marcus screams.

And then there are machine legs marching, and a T-600 shooting at people. The T-600 attacks Marcus, and then we see Marcus telling Connor he can help (more on that below). There’s bombing and explosions, and then Marcus throws a stool at a glass wall, breaking out of a facility somewhere. Connor screams, “If we don’t stay the course, we are all dead!” And then a partly machine-faced Marcus says, “I’m the only hope you have.” There are more explosions and then the thing of the cityscape exploding and turning into a skeleton face (from the motion poster.)

watchmen-030109

Here are a few highlights from the WonderCon 2009 Watchmen panel courtesy AICN and io9.  The panel discussion included director Zack Snyder, illustrator Dave Gibbons and stars Malin Akerman (Silk Spectre II), Billy Crudu0p (Dr. Manhattan), Jackie Earle Haley (Rorschach), Jeffrey Dean Morgan (The Comedian) and Patrick Wilson (Nite Owl II).

  • The studio originally had an idea of doing an Ocean’s Eleven type cast, comprised of huge movie stars, but that ended up not happening. Snyder talked to Tom Cruise for a while, but he was busy with Valkyrie, and Snyder was never sure what role Cruise would play.
  • Snyder said he would not be doing a sequel: “No. Not with me, anyway.”
  • Snyder called the movie Depression-era cinema… It’s like a regular movie with 40 more minutes at no extra cost!
  • Patrick Wilson was the first person cast, Billy Crudup the last.
  • The movie’s “director’s cut” is three hours and ten minutes, and will hopefully have a theatrically run in July.
  • Included in the cut will be extra violence, more blue nudity, Hollis Mason’s death, and some other “bits and bobs.”
  • The original script that the studio gave Snyder, when he first agreed to do the movie, ended with Nite Owl killing Ozymandias by crashing the Owl-ship into him via remote control. Nite Owl even says a cool catch phrase immediately afterwards.

startrektrailer-111708Here are some highlights from the WonderCon 2009 Star Trek panel, including a description of the new trailer, which will be attached to next week’s release of Watchmen.

Here’s TrekMovie’s description of the trailer:

The new trailer starts off with a new shot of the young Chris Pine Kirk on motorcycle headed for the Enterprise being constructed. We then see more of the scene in the Iowa bar, with Pike (Bruce Greenwood) saying to Kirk “I couldn’t believe it when the bar tender told me who you are” and Kirk replying back with the “why are you talking to me man” line (seen in the Super Bowl commercial). Cut to image of studio logos.

Greenwood’s voice comes back over scenes of the Kelvin in battle saying “your father was captain of a Starship for twelve minutes…he saved 800 lives…including yours…I dare you to do better…enlist in Starfleet.” During the dialog we see Chris Hemsworth as George Kirk on Kelvin (for the first time), and the ‘including yours’ line was shown along with the shot of Jennifer Morrison (giving birth) scene in the theatrical trailer. With the ‘enlist in Starfleet’ line you see an image of Kirk in a very large room full of cadets. Then cut to a shot of Kirk and Spock (at Academy) with Spock saying “you will experience fear, fear of certain death,” cut to more footage on the drilling platform. Then title card with “May 8th”

Then there is a shot of Spock on the bridge of the Enterprise saying “we have received a distress call” and then cut to a planet imploding (possibly Vulcan). Then we see a close-up of Eric Bana as Nero saying “I have been waiting for this day my whole life…” cut to shot of his ship “…this day of reckoning” followed by more effects shots of battle, including Enterprise. Then cut to bridge of Enterprise with Bones (Karl Urban) saying “we’ve got no captain and no first officer to replace him” to which Chris Pine replies in a serious tone “yeah we do” as he slowly sits in the captain’s chair. Another title card.

Then more effects shots and shots of Vulcan (including Winona Ryder as Amanda Grayson) and the Ben Cross (Sarek) voice over saying “you are capable of deciding your own destiny, the question is: which path will you choose.” This was followed with another quick succession of shots both on the Enterprise and in space, then back to Nero saying “James T. Kirk was a great man, but that was another life.” Then back to the bridge with someone saying “set off your torpedoes” and then Pike ordering “emergency evasive” and a shot of Nero yelling “fire everything.” And then even more effects shots, including one from what is like a ‘torpedo cam’ spinning towards the Enterprise. There is also a shot during this final sequence of Quinto Spock hugging Uhura (Zoe Saldana). And then cut to credits.

Panel highlights after the jump. (more…)

cloverfield-030109At the WonderCon 2009 panel for Star Trek, director J.J. Abrams was about about the progress of the sequel to the 2008 monster movie hit Cloverfield:

“We’re actually working on an idea right now,” Abrams told the packed crowd. “The key obviously at doing any kind of sequel, certainly this film included, is that it better not be a business decision. If you’re going to do something, it should be because you’re really inspired to do it. It doesn’t really have to mean anything, doesn’t mean it will work, but it means we did it because we cared, not because we thought we could get the bucks. We have an idea that we thought was pretty cool that we’re playing with, which means there will be something that’s connected to ‘Cloverfield,’ but I hope it happens sooner than later because the idea is pretty sweet.”

arresteddevelopment-120408During the panel presentation for Mitch Hurwitz’s new Fox animated show Sit Down, Shut Up on, the Arrested Development creator was asked by the moderator if he could provide an update on the highly-anticipated movie adaption of the show.  Here’s what Hurwitz said:

“Here’s what’s going on with the movie,” Hurwitz told the audience of his fans. “Everyone goes off and has careers and that kind of thing, so it’s been a little challenging to schedule everybody together, but everyone who has agreed to make this movie has agreed to make this movie, and we’re going to make the movie. I haven’t written it yet, so I’ll be accepting pitches. We’re determined to do this.”

“It was a great joy and privilege, all kidding aside, to do a show that took risks and with such a wonderful cast and wonderful writers,” he continued. “For us, it’s irresistible. Here’s an interesting thing about it. When we did the show, one of the things that really made it work is that we didn’t hold ourselves up to any standard. We got a lot of positive critical recommendations, but we even kind of ignored those and just did what was funny to us, and kind of remained the underdog in a great way. It was very clear early on that we weren’t going to be a big hit, so it really was a labor of love. Now suddenly, there is a bar to hit. I think the key to this is once we get as many pieces as we’re going to, which appears we have, we’ll just dive in and have fun and see if we can create the same thing. But we’re excited about it.”

fridaythe13th-022709New Line and Platinum Studios have announced that they are moving forward with a follow-up to their recent Friday the 13th update.  THR’s Risky Biz Blog reports that the film “is expected to be not a sequel so much as a follow-up”.  Explained further, they add that “the new picture is expected to use elements of the original franchise more as a jumping-off point than as a template.”

Despite a steep 80% drop for its second weekend, Friday the 13th has grossed a very respectable $56.6 million domestically ($71.9 million worldwide).  It’s the second-best performing movie in the franchise, lagging behind 2003’s Freddy vs. Jason crossover ($82.6 million domestically and $114.9 million worldwide).

topchef-022709UPDATE: I’ve added the Bravo press release, which I missed earlier, and updated the article to reflect a more complete ratings picture.

The original article follows below.

Wednesday’s Top Chef season five finale on Bravo drew a 2.5/4 HH rating/share, 3.74 million viewers and a 2.1/6 adults 18-49 rating/share, becoming the show’s second-highest-rated episode.  The episode grew 11% over last year’s finale and was just one-tenth of a point behind season 2’s record high.  The 2.1 A18-49 rating translates to 2.77 million viewers in the demo, making for an incredibly impressive 74% of its total audience.

Here’s a bit more from the Bravo press release:

This season, “Top Chef: New York” averaged 2.14 million adults 18-49 and 3.02 million total viewers. Versus season four, the show is up 18 percent in adults 18-49 (vs. 1.81 million) and 19 percent in total viewers (vs. 2.54 million). Season-to-date, the series ranks No.1 for all cable entertainment in its Wednesday 10 p.m. time period among adults 18-49 and total viewers, and with the finale, the series also marked its fifth consecutive week of gains in those demographics.

The full press release, which also includes data for The Real Housewives of Orange County, follows after the jump. (more…)
