watchmenposter-111208Yahoo! Movies has premiered a new movie poster for Zack Snyder’s Watchmen.  As always, click to enlarge.

Synopsis
300’s Zack Snyder brings Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ critically acclaimed comic book Watchmen to the big screen, courtesy of DC Comics and Warner Bros. Pictures. Set in an alternate universe circa 1985, the film’s world is a highly unstable one where a nuclear war is imminent between America and Russia. Superheroes have long been made to hang up their tights thanks to the government-sponsored Keene Act, but that all changes with the death of The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), a robust ex-hero commando whose mysterious free fall out a window perks the interest of one of the country’s last remaining vigilantes, Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley). His investigation leads him to caution many of his other former costumed colleagues, including Dr. Manhattan, Night Owl (Patrick Wilson), Ozymandias (Matthew Goode), Sally Jupiter (Carla Gugino), and her daughter, The Silk Spectre (Malin Akerman). Heralded for bringing the world of superheroes into the literary world, Watchmen gave the super-powered mythos a real-life grounding that had been missing in mainstream comics to that point. The film adaptation had languished in one form of development hell or another for years after the book’s release, with various directors on and off the project, including Terry Gilliam, David Hayter, and Darren Aronofsky, as well as Paul Greengrass, whose eventual dismissal stemmed from budget conflicts with the studio.

Watchmen hits theaters on March 6, 2009.

obama-111208HBO has acquired the rights–paying in the low seven figures–to an untitled Barack Obama documentary from producer Edward Norton.  According to THR, Norton’s Class 5 Films approached the Obama campaign in early 2006 about a documentary chronicling the President-elect’s history in politics.  Directors Amy Rice and Alicia Sams were granted extensive access to film Obama before he launched his run in 2007 and will continue through inauguration on January 20, 2009.

The documentary, which includes interviews with Obama, his senior campaign staff, family, friends and volunteers, willl air sometime next year.

“Senator Obama’s history-making race for the White House has given our film a perfect framework to explore the pulse of the country at this vital moment in our history,” said Norton, who produced the project with Stuart Blumberg and Bill Migliore. “We believe this film will capture a tipping point in American history when a new generation of leadership emerged and old prejudices were finally vaulted over.”

cwlogo-513The CW and Warner Bros. have been forced to scrap their plans for The Graysons, a series that the network was planning which was to follow the life and story of Dick Grayson before he became Batman’s sidekick Robin.  WB Pictures president Jeff Robinev changed his mind in recent days and according to Variety, wants Warner Bros. to “rethink its DC Comics strategy”:

“The studio has opted not to go forward with the development of ‘The Graysons’ at this time as the concept doesn’t fit the current strategy for the Batman franchise,” the studio said in a statement. “Warner Bros. Television is currently working on several replacement options for the CW.”

Also turns out that The Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan was never consulted and was uncomfortable with having a TV show related to the Batman franchise on the air, although the decision rested solely with Robinev.

dollhouse-102708Fox’s updated schedule has bad news for Joss Whedon fans.  The network has pushed back the debut of Whedon’s new series Dollhouse from January to Friday, February 13, 2009.  The one-month delay is obviously concerning, but the move to Friday nights into the “time slot of death” is even more so.  The network also isn’t giving the show much help in terms of a lead-in, deciding to move the struggling Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles to Friday nights at 8pm.

Production delays are also still an issue, with the LA Times reporting that production on the show’s seventh episode may have to be delayed due to issues with the script.

Meanwhile, Fox is showing more confidence with Fringe, deciding to give the show a boost from American Idol, which will lead into it.
