Army Wives Given Early Third Season Renewal July 13, 2008 7:38 pm

Just five episodes in to the new season, Lifetime has renewed its hit drama series Army Wives for a third season.  The move is in response to continued strong ratings, especially among the networks key demographics of women 18-49 and women 25-54, ranking No. 1 in both demographics across all ad supported basic cable programming.

Since premiering last year, ‘Army Wives’ has become a game-changer for Lifetime. Announcing this early renewal is a testament to the enormous faith and confidence we have in this show and its incredibly talented cast and production team, Lifetime CEO Andrea Wong said. “‘Army Wives’ exemplifies what Lifetime is all about—friendship, compassion, humor and heart. We are very proud of both its water cooler resonance and its success.

18 episodes have been ordered for the third season, which will begin airing in 2009. Army Wives airs Sunday nights on Lifetime at 10pm. The press release follows after the jump.

Though TV viewing on the broadcast nets simmers down during the summer months, this is the time of the year when the cable networks start to hit up with new seasons/series.  Here’s a highlight of this week’s results.

USA
Law & Order: Criminal Intent (season seven premiere) – 4.53 million viewers
In Plain Sight (season one, episode two) – 4.39 million viewers (-860,000/16% from the series premiere)

Lifetime
Army Wives (Season two premiere) – 4.52 million viewers

History
Ice Road Truckers (Season two premiere) – 3.85 million viewers

The hit Lifetime Television series Army Wives, which has already been renewed for season 2 (read related article here), broke records with the season finale Sunday night, becoming the networks most watched original series telecast ever.

The Lifetime original series Army Wives has been given an early 18 episode order for season 2.  The year’s #1 new cable drama among W18-49 and W25-54 (key groups for Lifetime) is the networks highest-rated series in their 23-year history.
