The European Championship match between Spain and Germany, in which Spain was victorious 1-0, got a 3.1 overnight rating yesterday on ABC (the final national rating will be available at a later date). It was the first time that a Euro final was televised on U.S. network television.
As expected, the match drew considerably higher ratings overseas, especially in the two home nations of the teams. In Spain, the game set an all-time record for a televised game on Spanish television, averaging an 81% audience share or 14.5 million viewers on the free-to-air channel Cuatro. Even more impressive, the final minute drew more than 17.7 million viewers (or an 88.6% share), making it the most-watched program in Spanish television history.
Over in Germany, an equally impressive 80% of the audience, or 26 million viewers, tuned in to the game on ARD. But, that figure was short by about 3.5 million of the record set by sister channel ZDF when they aired Germany’s last-minute win over Turkey.
