Though it hurt Desperate Housewives, the season finale of Survivor wasn’t strong enough to reign as the night’s most-watched program as ABC took households and adults 18-49, while CBS stayed close and took viewers. CBS took households and viewers on the strength of CSI (the night’s most watched program) and Without a Trace, while ABC managed to just barely take first place among adults 18-49 thanks to that demo’s most watched program last night Grey’s Anatomy and a solid performance by Lost. The return of House (in a new time slot) helped put Fox in first place for the evening among adults 18-49, but a steep decline among total audience from its last newly aired episode (-8.65M viewers/37% and 37% among A18-49) kept the network in second place among households and viewers. To be fair though, that last new episode of House aired out of a fresh installment of American Idol. Even still, compared to the show’s season average up to last night, the series was of by 4.90 million/25% among viewers, 23% among households and 29% among A18-49.
House’s weaker than average performance allowed for Dancing With the Stars (the night’s most-watched program) to lead ABC to a first place finish on the evening among both households and viewers.
CBS meanwhile got good mileage from its slate of comedies and an original episode of “CSI: Miami”, as the network finished in third overall, but a solid second among A18-49 (just a half point off from first place Fox in the demo).
Rounding out the rest of the evening was NBC in a competitive fourth place, and The CW in last place. About The CW, the network can’t be too pleased that One Tree Hill faded by nearly a half million viewers (-420,000/14%) and 14% among adults 18-49, while lead-in Gossip Girl remained flat from the week prior.

ABC’s returning dramas Ugly Betty, Grey’s Anatomy (the nights most-watched program among adults 18-49) and Lost (now in its new post-Grey’s Anatomy timeslot) led ABC to a ratings victory last night among adults 18-49. CBS however, was still stronger among total viewers, thanks to the nights most-watched program CSI.
The head-to-head battle of CSI and Grey’s Anatomy remains competitive, but both shows drew lower-than average numbers. CSI was off the most (3.35 million/17% among viewers and 22% among adults 18-49), while Grey’s Anatomy was off by 1.66 million/9% among viewers and 11% among adults 18-49 from its last newly aired episode. Curious as to how the two shows have done against each other? Check out the following two CSI vs. Grey’s Anatomy charts–VIEWERS ||| ADULTS 18-49.
Lost debuted in its new 10:00 p.m. time slot to solid results. Retention from its lead-in was a very impressive 87% among adults 18-49, and it grew in each category from its last newly aired episode: Households by 9%, Viewers by 870,000/8% and A18-49 by 20%.
Everything else seemed to be down on the evening, including the NBC’s comedies. The Office suffered steep declines of 2.3 million/23% among viewers and 22% among adults 18-49.

NBC drew better than average numbers on Wednesday night, but it wasn’t enough to overcome American Idol, which led Fox to another first place Wednesday night showing.
NBC’s Law & Order returned very strong. The episode, which was the last for actor Jesse L. Martin, was up an impressive 2.14 million/20% among viewers and 23% among adults 18-49 from its last newly aired episode back in March, helping propel NBC to a competitive second place on the evening.
Also worth noting was The CW’s lineup, but for different reasons. America’s Next Top Model matched its season high of a 2.0 rating among adults 18-49 and drew more than four million viewers for the first time this season (4.23M).
Meanwhile, the season two finale of Pussycat Dolls Present broke the 2 million mark for the first time this season (2.30M). Overall though, the second season of the series was a big disappointment, averaging just 1.70 million viewers and a 0.8/2 rating/share among adults 18-49 over nine episodes. To put that in perspective, the first season of the show averaged a significantly better 2.96 million viewers and a 1.3/3 rating/share among adults 18-49 over eight episodes. That’s a drop of 1.26 million/43% among viewers and 38% among adults 18-49 (click here for a season 1-2 ratings chart).

ABC’s Dancing With the Stars led the network to a first place finish among viewers, but CBS’s comedies and CSI: Miami put the network in first place among adults 18-49.
Elsewhere on the evening, though the series returned with less than 2.5 million viewers (2.44 million), Gossip Girl had a mostly successful return in its new timeslot. The series was up by 7% among viewers and 18% among adults 18-49 from its last newly aired episode.
