Almost as important to Fox as the ratings performance of American Idol, are the performance of the shows the network programs to air out of it.

Fox announced today plans to use the reality show to help the debut of the new David E. Kellye drama The Wedding Bells as well as its struggling sitcom ‘Til Death, and perhaps even a few other shows yet to be launched.

Microsoft Corp. said that they expect to introduce video games for its Zune music player within 18 months, in an effort to stay on equal footing with Apple Inc.’s iPod.

The Zune hasn’t had much success against the Apple iPod, selling in the “..hundreds of thousands”, according to Robbie Bach, president of the Entertainment and Devices division of Microsoft.

Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple Computer, unveiled a new set-top box that allows users to stream video from their computers to their tv’s, as well as a new mobile phone that downloads and plays music.

Both devices were announced and showcased by Steve Jobs during his keynote at Macworld. It was also announced that Apple Computer, Inc. has stripped the “Computer” from their name and will now go by simply Apple, Inc.

Celine Dion’s show to end this year January 5, 2007 8:08 pm

Celine Dion’s Las Vegas show will end its run December 15, 2007 after almost four years at Caesars Palace. The show pulled in over $78 million over 147 shows in 2006, making it the sixth highest grossing act in North America last year.

A late January show will be filmed for a TV special and DVD. Those interested in catching a final show can begin purchasing tickets for the final cycle when they go on sale March 1.

According to Variety, in January of next year CBS will launch a digital record label, with the goal of using their television, iTunes and Innertube broadband channel to promote them.

CBS Records will use the exisiting CBS Entertainment and CBS Interactive infastructures and launch with three artists — Senor Happy, Will Dailey and P.J. Olsson, with plans to sign at least another five artists during the first year.Larry Jenkins, head of his own management company, L J Entertainment, and a former publicity and marketing exec at Capitol Records and Columbia Records, will consult for CBS Records during the primary launch phase, identifying talent and assisting with A&R administration. He will be working with Nancy Tellem, president of CBS Paramount Network Television Entertainment Group, under whose aegis CBS Records will fall.

“The cost of entry is so low that it was a great way of setting up a new model for a record label,” Tellem told Daily Variety. “If we can lower music costs while gaining an additional revenue stream, it’s a win-win.”

Barkley and Timberlake top MTV Europe Music Awards November 5, 2006 12:49 am

Timberlake, who was also the host of the show, performed his singles “Sexyback” and “My Love”. He won for best male singer and best pop award.

Gnarls Barkely, composed of producer Danger Mouse and singer Cee-Lo Green, won for best song and the future sounds award, which was voted on by their peers.

Other winners on the evening were Christina Aguilera for best female singer, Depeche Mode for best group, Red Hot Chili Peppers for best album, Kanye West for best hip hop act, Rhianna for best R&B, the Killers were voted best rock band, Muse for best alternative band and the best video award went to Justice vs. Simian’s.

In its ever expanding quest to add more original programming to its line-up, VH1 has greenlit six new unscripted series under the “Wild Life” category, a new brand similar in goals to its current “CelebrReality” brand of series’.

Best Buy Enters Music Download Business October 9, 2006 8:30 am

Already online at www.bestbuy.com/digitalmusicstore, Best Buy has entered into the music download business with their new service, along with partners RealNetworks and SanDisk.

The service, Best Buy Digital Music Store, allows users to either download individual tracks of music (stored permanently) or pay a monthly subscription fee (files are not permanent). The store is run on RealNetworks’ Rhapsody 4.0 service and it will be jointly promoted by Best Buy, and RealNetworks. Best Buy will also begin promoting SanDisk MP3 players for use with the service in their stores.

Microsoft Zune

Microsoft has set the price and release date of its personal multimedia iPod like device.

The Microsoft Zune will launch on November 14th this year for the MSRP of $249.99. The 30GB model’s price is $50 less than the comparable iPod model from Apple.

Users can purchase a Zune Pass ($14.99/month) and have access to millions of songs, or they can download individual songs for 79¢ per track (also less than what Apple charges – 99¢ per track).
