The 2002 romantic comedy starring Jennifer Lopez, Maid in Manhattan, is being adapted from the big screen to Television courtesy of ABC. Lopez will executive produce the planned series, along with Joe Roth and the film’s producer, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, while Chad Hodge will write. The hourlong drama/comedy will not be a remake, however: “The show is a different maid in a different Manhattan,” Hodge said. While the lead will remain a young Latina from the Bronx, the series will focus mostly on her relationships with her co-workers at a Manhattan hotel.

ABC has put in a script order for a new TV series based on the supernatural movie The Witches of Eastwick.  The pilot will be written by Dawson’s Creek writer Maggie Friedman.

This marks the third attempt at a TV version of the 1987 film (and book of which it was based), which starred Jack Nicholson, Cher, Susan Sarandon and Michelle Pfeiffer.  In 1992, Warner Bros. TV commissioned writers Carlton Cuse and Jeffrey Boam to develop The Witches of Eastwick for NBC and in 2002, Fox developed a version along with Warner Bros. TV titled Eastwick, from excecutive producer Jim Leonard and writers Jon Cowan and Robert Rovner.

Four Consecutive First Place Weekends for “The Dark Knight”; Now Third Highest Grossing Movie of All-Time August 10, 2008 11:14 pm

The Dark Knight held off comedy Pineapple Express over the weekend, taking in an estimated $26.03M from 4,025 theaters to take first place for the fourth consecutive weekend.  That’s a drop of just 39% from the weekend prior.  The film’s total domestic gross now stands at $441.54M, good enough to put it into third place on the all-time list, just below #2 Star Wars ($461M).  As I noted last week, I’m going to continue tracking the performance of The Dark Knight and my estimate has widened slightly to $496-547M total domestic box office (Although Titanic’s $600.79M record is unlikely, it’s not entirely out of the question just yet.  It’s really going to depend on how the movie performs over the coming weeks).

In terms of overseas box office, the film has tacked on an additional $263.1M, growing its worldwide cume to over $700M at $704.64M.

Pineapple Express, meanwhile, grossed $22.4M over the weekend, but the film actually opened on Wednesday so it’s taken in $40.47M over its first five days of release. A good sum for an R-rated comedy.

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger told the Los Angeles Times that he’s still not sold on Terminator Salvation, despite given a private screening of the comic-con reel by the movie’s producers:

“I’ve seen very little footage so I don’t really have a feel for it. I hope they do well, and I hope it is a huge hit. I do hope it creates a spectacle on the screen. That is what James Cameron created,” Arnold said. “I still don’t know how it will play out with this one. They showed me some footage, but I don’t have a feel for the movie. I didn’t see enough. I wasn’t sure who the Terminator was. I don’t know if there is one or if he’s the star or the hero. These are the things that determine the success and how the strong the movie will be.”

Terminator Salvation hits theaters on May 22, 2009.

New Record for “The Dark Knight” August 6, 2008 6:30 am

Posted by Rosario T. Calabria in Box Office, Movies, The Dark Knight.

The Dark Knight broke yet another record on Monday, fastest movie to $400M. The film accomplished the feat in just 18 days (resting at $400,038,494 by the end of Monday), destroying the prior record held by Shrek 2 which took 43 days to hit the mark.

Additionally, The Dark Knight has added $203.7M from overseas markets pushing its worldwide gross to $603.74M with several key markets yet to open.

My revised estimate for the film’s total domestic gross now stands between $493M and $552M, which would place it second all time ahead of Star Wars ($461M), but below the all-time domestic grosser Titanic ($600.79M). We’ll know in the coming weeks if The Dark Knight truly has the legs to beat Titanic.

It currently ranks as the #8 highest-grossing film of all time.  Ahead of #9 Revenge of the Sith ($380.27M) and slightly below #7 Spider-Man ($403.71M) which it should pass on Tuesday.  Click here to check out the entire list.

“The Dark Knight” Stays In Front in Third Week August 4, 2008 6:13 pm

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor got off to a strong start on Friday with $15.2M, a good deal ahead of The Dark Knight ($12.7M), but it fell behind on Saturday and Sunday en route to a $40.56M weekend, just below the $42.66M taken in by first place finisher The Dark Knight.

The Mummy’s box office take over the weekend compares favorably with the first film in the franchise which took in $43.37M in its first weekend back in 1999, but is well below what The Mummy II drew in 2001 ($68.14M).  Industry expections were for the film to take in somewhere in the neighborhood of $45-50M so it slightly underperformed.

Moving back to The Dark Knight, this is the film’s third consecutive weekend at #1and its new domestic cume is now $393.75M, putting it in eighth place on the all-time domestic gross list.  Though Titanic’s domestic record of $600.79M looks now to be safe, second place holder Star Wars with $461M will likely go down. My current estimate has The Dark Knight ending its box office run somewhere between $486-539M.  I’ll update those totals as the weeks go on.
