American Idol carried Fox to yet another Thursday night victory, but New Amsterdam, in its second episode, fell by 2.9 million or 22% among viewers and 20% among adults 18-49. Retention was also quite weak at only 40% among viewers and 38% among adults 18-49.

Total audience remains relatively solid (over 10 million viewers), so we’ll see how the show fares in its third outing in its new time slot this upcoming Monday.

Elsewhere on the evening, Survivor and repeats of CSI and Without a Trace kept CBS in its now familiar and solid second place, while ABC held off NBC for third place among total viewership, and was second among adults 18-49 thanks to a consistent performance by Lost.

Nothing surprising with Tuesday nights results, as Idol easily powers Fox to a win.

In series premiere news, New Amsterdam benefited greatly from its post-Idol time slot, as it was amply sampled with nearly 14 million viewers.

ABC’s 20/20 special on the Royal Family lifted the network to first place on the evening among households and viewers, despite the poor performance from lead-out October Road.

Fox, however, managed to tie with ABC among adults 18-49 thanks to two back-to-back episodes of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, including the first season finale.

Elsewhere on the evening, NBC placed third with its combination of reality (My Dad Is Better Than Your Dad and Deal or No Deal) and Medium.

CBS took third, while The CW’s new edition of The Pussycat Dolls Present continues to perform poorly, leaving that network in a very distant last place.

Oprah’s Big Give powered ABC to an easy Sunday night victory among total audience and adults 18-49. The series got off a terrific start, drawing in more than 15 million viewers (first place for the evening) and a 5.3 A18-49 rating (also first for the evening).

Fox trailed in second place with its coverage of NASCAR, and its usual mix of comedies, drawing a solid adult 18-49 audience, just narrowly trailing ABC in that demo.

Elsewhere on the evening, CBS remained on par with prior Sunday’s, as the re-purposed episodes of Dexter continue to do well closing out the evening for the network.

Though well back in fourth place on the evening, NBC was relatively competitive, trailing third place CBS only minimally.

The CW, meanwhile, saw only a minimal increase in viewership, with its slightly tweaked lineup that included the return of comedies Everybody Hates Chris and Aliens in America.

CBS carried the evening with another strong performance by Price is Right, which was the nights most watched program among households and viewers, while Fox was a competitive second place thanks to repeats of Bones and House.

Elsewhere on the evening, the second week of Amne$ia fared poorly, dipping by 31% among viewers and 42% among adults 18-49, however, NBC’s evening was saved somewhat by better than average performances for two editions of Dateline.

ABC and The CW trailed in fourth and fifth, respectively.

American Idol’s second elimination episode improved upon last week’s episode by 11% among households and 7% among adults 18-49. The improvement also translated to Don’t Forget The Lyrics (+17% among viewers and +8% among adults 18-49).

Meanwhile ABC’s Lost, though off from double-digits compared to last week, was still the night’s most-watched scripted program, and the overall second most-watched series among adults 18-49.

Fox continues to roll over the competition, with another strong performance by American Idol, which gave a good boost to returning comedy Back to You. Back to You grew by 5.02 million or 69% among viewers and 80% among adults 18-49 from its last newly aired episode back in November of last year, posting series highs.

Elsewhere on the evening, week three of the new season of Jericho managed to register a much needed boost, improving week-to-week by 1.04 million or 18% among viewers and 10% among adults 18-49.

Overall viewership, however, remains low at under 7 million.

In series premiere news, NBC’s MySpace.com series Quarterlife flopped with less than 4 million viewers, and retention from its lead-in at a very weak 48% among households and 52% among adults 18-49.

The CW’s One Tree Hill continues to motor along with solid ratings, growing by 11% among households and 8% among adults 18-49.

ABC’s Raisin in the Sun film gave the network a strong first place finish on the evening, with a consistent half-hour to half-hour performance through 11:00.

NBC meanwhile was a respectable second place on the evening thanks to another strong outing from Deal or No Deal, the nights most-watched series.

Elsewhere on the evening, despite coming no where close to the numbers it was getting post-American Idol, The Moment of Truth did fill in nicely for the departed Prison Break, however at 9:00 ‘Terminator’ hit another series low. I sure hope FOX finds a way to keep the show for another season, because I surely am enjoying it and would hate to see it last for only one season. It still performs well among the key A18-49 demo, so it’s not all bad.

The CW meanwhile languished in a now familiar last place, as the new edition of Pussycat Dolls Present failed to crack 2 million viewers, well below last season’s numbers. (more…)

ABC’s coverage of the 80th Annual Academy Awards led the network to an easy win on Sunday night, but year-to-year, the awards show was off by a disappointing 8.16 million or 20% among viewers and 24% among adults 18-49 (click here for a list of winners).

Elsewhere on the evening, Fox was the only major net to program effectively, with its two-hours of NASCAR coverage and repeats of The Simpsons putting the network in a solid second place finish for the evening.

CBS finished in third place for the evening, with Big Brother continuing to perform poorly, while another re-purposed episode of the Showtime hit Dexter showed promise in its second week, growing from its lead-in among adults 18-49. (more…)

A special presentation of Price is Right (the night’s most-watched program) pushed CBS to the front of the pack on Friday night among households and viewers, but strong repeat numbers for Bones and House on FOX put that network in front among adults 18-49.

Meanwhile, the series premiere of Amne$ia on NBC got off to an okay start, holding steady from its 1 vs. 100 lead-in among households and viewers and growing by 14% among adults 18-49.

ABC’s night was salvaged by solid numbers from two episodes of 20/20.

The first elimination episode of American Idol, and Don’t Forget the Lyrics!, led FOX to an easy first place finish on Thursday night.

Don’t Forget the Lyrics! was boosted by 3.84 million or 44% among viewers and a staggering 55% among adults 18-49 from its last newly aired episode thanks to its American Idol.

Elsewhere on the evening, CBS got another great night from its mixture of repeats (CSI and Without a Trace) and an original episode of the latest installment of Survivor to finish in a competitive second place for the evening among total audience.

ABC’s Lost seems to have stabilized in its fourth week back on the air, as the series posted nearly identical numbers from the week prior. Also worth noting is that Lost was the second most-watched program of the evening, behind American Idol. Eli Stone also managed to stay even with last week episode, though its numbers still remain relatively low, as does its retention from Lost, especially among adults 18-49. (60% among households, 56% among viewers and 47% among adults 18-49.)

NBC’s numbers were nothing out of the ordinary with a solid performance from Celebrity Apprentice, though its declined in recent weeks. Lipstick Jungle also stabilized, but its numbers are too low.

The CW even got in on some of the good news for the evening. Supernatural, without the benefit of an original episode of Smallville leading into it, proved that it can stand on its own. The series improved by 8% among both viewers and adults 18-49.

FOX carries the evening with its two-hour edition of American Idol, featuring performances by the top 12 ladies. The maintained Tuesday night’s ratings, and grew from last week’s numbers by nearly 4 million viewers and 13% among adults 18-49.

Elsewhere on the evening, NBC followed in second place, same as the week prior, but saw some erosion in viewership, likely attributed to the second hour of American Idol.

CBS took third, but Big Brother, the networks only original episode on the evening, continues to do poorly. ABC took a hit, especially in the 9PM hour, where Supernanny declined by a steep 32% among viewers and 34% among adults 18-49.

And lastly, the season premiere of America’s Next Top Model on The CW got off to a poor start. The series declined by 1 million or 20% among viewers and 21% among adults 18-49. Considering this is The CW’s flagship series, this loss in viewership is very concerning. The loss, most likely, can be directly attributed to the presence of American Idol in the hour. Last season (September 26, 2007), ‘Model didn’t have to go up against such stiff competition (FOX aired Kitchen Nightmares in the time period).

Fox carried the evening thanks to a two-hour edition of American Idol. However, the program declined from last week’s near 30M mark, by 1.12 million viewers (-4%) and 9% among adults 18-49.

Elsewhere on the evening, a two-hour edition of Biggest Loser and a repeat of SVU put NBC in second place, ahead of third place finisher CBS, who saw its original programs Big Brother and Jericho suffer steep week two declines in their new seasons. Jericho was off by 1.14 million, or 16% among viewers and 23% among adults 18-49 from last week’s season two premiere. Not good news.

ABC and The CW followed in fourth and fifth, respectively.

A two-hour edition of Deal or No Deal, the nights most-watched program, powered NBC to a win on Monday night among households, viewers and adults 18-49. The series premiere of My Dad Is Better Than Your Dad drew only so-so numbers, as the program managed to only hold 58% of its lead-in’s audience. It’s performance among adults 18-49 was a little better (67%), but still not great.

Elsewhere on the evening, CBS got solid results from a mostly repeat filled lineup, finishing in second place for the evening among total audience. Welcome to the Captain and The New Adventures of Old Christine were the only new programs CBS aired, with the former being the only poor performer. In its third week on the air, the series posted series lows. The show is off by 2.46M viewers (31%), 33% among households and 23% among adults 18-49 from its series premiere.  Enjoy it while it lasts, because it’s highly doubtful it’ll be around past this season.

Fox got a solid second place finish for the evening among adults 18-49 thanks to the season three finale of Prison Break and an original episode of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, which continues to rate well among the coveted A18-49 demographic, despite not being a heavily viewed program.

ABC trailed with an okay performance out of the season finale of Dance War: Bruno vs. Carrie Ann, and another poor outing from October Road, while The CW’s new season of The Pussycat Dolls Present, got off to a very, very poor start. Compared to last season’s premiere, the show declined by 2.16M, or (55%) among viewers, 46% among households and 47% among adults 18-49.

Ouch.

ABC original lineup, anchored by the nights most-watched show Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, led the evening among households and viewers.

NBC, however, managed to take the win among adults 18-49 thanks to the networks successful airing of the back-door pilot Knight Rider movie, which was the nights most-watched show among the key A18-49 demo. The movie grew in each half-hour.

Elsewhere on the evening, the network-broadcast premiere of the Showtime series Dexter got off a so-so start. Overall viewership was somewhat low, but it did manage to build from its lead-in among adults 18-49. Over on Fox, the network did its usual solid numbers among adults 18-49 from its comedy lineup and the ending portion of the Daytona 500.

Weak night split between NBC (first in viewers and households) and Fox (first in adults 18-49).

The season five finale of NBC’s Las Vegas led that network to a first place finish on the evening, while repeats of House secured a first place finish among adults 18-49 for Fox.

Las Vegas, however, was off by more than 1 million viewer (14%) and 15% among adults 18-49 from last season’s finale.

CBS pulled in front on Thursday night among households and viewers (and tying for second among adults 18-49), thanks to a fresh installment of Survivor: Micronesia and solid results from repeats of CSI and Without a Trace.

ABC, however, still managed to take first place for the evening among adults 18-49 thanks to Lost, which was the nights most-watched program in the demo, households and viewers.

There was some decline in the viewership of Lost though, as the program declined by more than 1.5 million viewers (-11%) and -12% in the key A18-49 demo.

Week two of freshman dramas Eli Stone (ABC) and Lipstick Jungle (NBC) didn’t fare so well. Eli Stone’s drop was a little less severe (-11% among viewers) than Lipstick Jungle’s however (-19%).

There was nothing unusual with Tuesday nights ratings, as Hollywood week was kind to American Idol, which posted solid week-to-week gains, to give Fox an expected ratings win.

Elsewhere on the night, the return of Jericho in its new timeslot, and day, drew poor results. The show was down by more than 4.5 million viewers from its series premiere last season. The only good news was that compared to last season’s finale, the show held up fairly well among total audience, and grew by 19% among adults 18-49.

Despite being down slightly from last year, CBS’s presentation of the 50th Annual Grammy Awards along with a strong outing from 60 Minutes pushed the network to first place for the evening among households, viewers and adults 18-49.

ABC followed in a competitive second place, with the nights most-watched program (other than the Awards show) with Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, however Brothers & Sisters returned with poor results, dropping by more than 20% among viewers and adults 18-49.

Fox settled in for third place with a solid performance from the last hour of the NFL Pro Bowl, and repeat and original episodes of its animated comedy lineup. NBC meanwhile, saw good results for a Most Outrageous Moments special.

The CW was, as usual, well behind in last place.

The season premiere of the next edition of Survivor (Micronesia) propelled CBS to first place on the evening among households and viewers. ABC, however, drew the most viewers in the key A18-49 demographic, thanks to another strong performance by Lost, which again led the night among households, viewers and adults 18-49.

On the new series front, the news wasn’t as good. ABC’s Eli Stone fell nearly 2 million viewers and 16% among viewers and 10% among adults 18-49. Though the show still drew a first place finish in the hour among adults 18-49, overcoming the series premiere of NBC’s Lipstick Jungle.

Which brings us to that show. I know it’s just the first week, but you can basically call the shows performance a flop. It slid from its lead-in by 12% among both adults 18-49 and viewers (-1.04 million) settling for last place on the hour.

Not a good start for the new NBC series, and a poor performance by Eli Stone, which continues to drop significantly in its second-half hour (numbers will drop even further when finals are released since Lost ran 5 minutes into the 10:00 p.m. hour).

However, I’ve always maintained that week three is the key of a new show, so let’s see what happens next week for Eli Stone and the week after for Lipstick Jungle, before truly declaring them dead.
