Fox’s American Idol led the network to another strong Tuesday night victory, along with Hell’s Kitchen, which continues to do well.

Elsewhere on the evening, the season five finale of The Biggest Loser and the return of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit put NBC in a comfortable second place on the evening.  The Biggest Loser held steady compared to last season’s finale, off just 2% among viewers and 4% among adults 18-49.  Overall, the fifth season of the series (16 episodes including tonight’s finale) averaged a solid 8.32 million viewers and a 3.3/8 rating/share among adults 18-49.

The return of the lowly rated comedy According to Jim dragged down ABC’s numbers some (third among viewers, tied for third among A18-49).  Dancing With the Stars: Results Show was down 2.00 million/12% among viewers and 6% among A18-49 from the week prior.

CBS was paced by NCIS, which attracted nearly 15 million viewers.

ABC’s Desperate Housewives returned as the night’s most watched episode, but the series declined by a disappointing 3.78 million/19% among viewers and 22% among adults 18-49, hitting a series low in the process among the key A18-49 demo.

Viewerwise though, the show is still at around the same range as it was last season.  Despite low retention numbers from its lead-in (57% among viewers and 51% among A18-49)  Eli Stone took advantage of its stronger lead-in en route to an increase of 3.31 million/56% among viewers and 61% among A18-49 from its last newly aired episode.  The season one finale, which could turn out to be the show’s series finale, airs this coming Thursday, April 17th.

With the addition of the final segment of The Masters, CBS got solid numbers from its lineup, adding up to a first place finish among households.  The network finished in second place among A18-49 and was just 20,000 viewers shy from first place ABC among viewers (10.46M vs. 10.44M).

CBS easily took care of the competition on Friday night led by the nights most watched program among viewers and households (Numb3rs) as well as among adults 18-49 (Ghost Whisperer).

Elsewhere on the evening, after a promising uptick in viewership last week, Fox’s Canterbury’s Law sank back downward.  Meanwhile, the 2008 edition of Miss USA posted signficant declines of 1.83 million/25% among viewers and 23% among adults 18-49.

CSI just barely held off American Idol as the nights most watched series among total viewers, but Idol was ahead among adults 18-49.  In the end, CBS was the nights most watched network among households, while Fox took first place among both viewers and adults 18-49.

Elsewhere on the evening, the results for the return of NBC comedies 30 Rock, The Office and Scrubs and E.R. were mixed.  The Office improved by 5% among viewers and Scrubs by 36%, while both 30 Rock and E.R. saw their audiences decline (4% for 30 Rock and 15% for E.R.).

The Desperate Housewives repeat helped Eli Stone to a small bounce in viewers and adults 18-49. Don’t forget that there will be a special airing of the series out of an original installment of Desperate Housewives this Sunday.

Year two the American Idol special Idol Gives Back, which ran from 7:30-10:00, gave Fox an easy victory, but the program was off by more than 30% among both viewers and adults 18-49 from how the program rated last year.  Most of that loss of viewership can probably be attributed to there being no competition/elimination round, which was the case last year.

Elsewhere on the evening, CBS was a competitive second place headlined by solid outings from Criminal Minds and CSI: NY, despite the latter dropping by 14% in the demo, while ABC and NBC battled over third place (ABC third among viewers, NBC third among adults 18-49).

The CW’s Pussycat Dolls Present: Girlicious received a slight bounce from an America’s Next Top Model clip show, but it still failed to hit 2 million viewers.

Fox’s American Idol and Hell’s Kitchen remained in front of the competition on Tuesday night.

ABC, meanwhile, was a competitive second headlined by Dancing With the Stars, and Boston Legal returned from its nearly two month hiatus strong (+2.73M/37% among viewers and +39% among adults 18-49).

Rounding out the rest of the evening, NBC finished in its usual solid third place with The Biggest Loser, while the return of NCIS on CBS wasn’t enough to keep the network out of fourth place.

The Price Is Right Million Dollar Spectacular and CBS’s returning dramas Ghost Whisperer and Numb3rs helped push the network to first place last night, with minimal loss among viewership from their last newly aired episodes.  However, the story among adults 18-49 was a bit different.  Both shows posted soft numbers in the key demo, with Ghost Whisperer off by 15% and Numb3rs by 12%.

Elsewhere on the evening, NBC and continues to get poor numbers from its fading gameshow Amne$ia, while Fox finally got some good news out of new drama Canterbury’s Law.  The series improved by a much needed 1.33 million/28% among viewers and 27% among adults 18-49 as it climbed over the 6 million mark.  There’s still cause for concern among adults 18-49 (it posted a low 1.4 rating), but the bump in viewership is certainly good news.

Over on ABC, the network tried to give returning gameshow Duel a boost by positioning a repeat of America’s Funniest Home Videos in front of it, but the move failed.  The gameshow failed to hit 4 million viewers and was off by a devastatingly fatal 2.79 million/42% among viewers and 43% among adults 18-49.

The poor performances by ABC (and FOX among adults 18-49) allowed The CW’s Smackdown to post some of its better numbers in a while (over 4.5 million viewers) as the network was able to tie for fourth place on the evening among adults 18-49.

CBS’s returning dramas CSI (the nights most-watched show) and Without A Trace and Survivor combined to easily push CBS to the top spot on Thursday night, defeating its closest competition by more than 6 million viewers.

Fox fared well with its two-hour edition of Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?, which kept the network ahead of returning comedy My Name Is Earl on NBC (third place).

Speaking of ‘Earl’, the comedy returned with an hour long episode and posted a performance that was mostly even from its last newly aired episode (which was this past January).  Audience loss was minimized among total viewers (-250,000/-3%), though there could be some cause for concern among adults 18-49, where the show was off by 9%.

Elsewhere on the evening, back-to-back episodes of the ABC comedy Miss Guided–which included the season one finale–failed to improve upon prior performances and Eli Stone continues to falter without the help of an original installment of Lost.

The CW aired repeats of Smallville and Supernatural. (more…)

American Idol propelled Fox to yet another Wednesday night victory along with lead-in The Moment of Truth, which also won its timeslot.

CBS, however, was stronger than usual courtesy returning dramas Criminal Minds and CSI: NY, which held consistent from their last newly aired episodes.

Elsewhere on the evening, NBC and ABC (third and fourth respectively) posted consistent numbers, while The CW’s flagship series America’s Next Top Model, although still down by over a million viewers from the year prior, improved by a noteworthy 550,000/16% among viewers and 12% among adults 18-49 as it crossed the 4 million mark.

There was no joking around last night, as Fox easily carried the evening thanks to American Idol and the fourth season premiere of Hell’s Kitchen, which was boosted by a significant 4.39 million/54% among viewers and 54% among adults 18-49 thanks to the American Idol lead-in.

Elsewhere on the evening, ABC and CBS were a competitive second and third, respectively, while NBC was a consistent fourth with another solid outing from Biggest Loser.

As usual, The CW was far back in last place.

ABC and CBS shared honors on Monday night, as ABC was the nights most-watched network (Dancing With the Stars was the most-watched show), while CBS took first place for the evening among adults 18-49 thanks to continued strong numbers from its comedy lineup and CSI Miami.

The most noteworthy performance of the night was The New Adventure of Old Christine which grew an impressive 2.64 million/27% among viewers and 16% among A18-49.

Elsewhere on the evening, original episodes of Deal or No Deal and Medium kept NBC in third, while New Amsterdam saw a modest improvement on Fox (+440,000/7% among viewers and +5% among A18-49).

The CW was far behind in last place.

Helped by its continuing coverage of the NCAA Basketball Tournament, CBS’s original lineup of programming led the network to a comfortable first place finish among both households and viewers.

ABC, however, managed to snag a first place finish among the key adults 18-49 demographic, as the network saw Oprah’s Big Give rebound nicely from last week’s below-average numbers, improving by 1.54 million/16% among viewers and 15% among A18-49.

It was business as usual for the other networks, with NBC following in third, Fox in fourth (but third among A18-49) and The CW a very, very distant last place.
