Evan Almighty was first for the weekend, but underperformed, managing only $31.19 million from 3,604 theaters. The film was well off from its predecessor, the 2003 Jim Carrey hit Bruce Almighty, which grossed an impressive $67.95 million. With its huge budget of $175 million (Bruce Almighty’s budget was $81 million), the movie has quite a ways to go before it breaks even, let alone is considered a hit.

Certainly not a terrible debut, as it’ll coast to past $30 million over the weekend, but its much lower than initial estimates ($50M+) and revised lowered estimates from the studio Universal, who were hoping for $40M.
