Weeds and Californication got the new comedy season for Showtime off to a great start, with Weeds eclipsing its previous record for most viewed comedy series on the network, and Californication benefiting from that extra boos of viewers.

At 10:00 p.m., a record (for the show) 824,000 viewers watched the season three premiere of Weeds, well above the 580,000 that tuned in for season 2’s premiere and well ahead of the 488,000 that first saw the series premiere of the show.

The new comedy series Californication, which stars David Duchovny as a novelist with sex and drug addictions, struggling to balance life and work, got off to a good start, holding onto 550,000 viewers. That debut number makes the series the most watched scripted comedy debut ever, eclipsing the 2005 debut of Weeds (Fat Actress still holds the mark for most watched comedy–non-scripted).
