Well, it turns out that rumors of the show’s cancellation (related story here) were indeed correct. HBO has officially canceled the David Milch series John From Cincinnati.
The decision was handed down on Monday, just a day after the show concluded its first (and now only) season.
HBO though is still interested in staying in business with the show’s co-creator, as he is in the process of extending his existing development deal with the network (which currently runs through August 2008).
As is well known, the show had the pleasure of leading out of the series finale of The Sopranos, but failed to capitalize on the exposure, posting poor numbers in terms of retention. The series continued to fade to an average just a little over the 1 million viewer mark, well below where it started (3.42 million viewers).

Too bad, I loved it. Too weird for people I guess. Every episode was intriguing, strange, and well acted (with more than a few actors from Deadwood). Another great show gets the premature axe. BEAT.
My biggest complaint…is actually the acting. I understand using surfers and boarders in order to shoot some good looking action shots, but they acting was horrible from a few of them. I am sad to see it go though…just like Carnivale.
[…] News. trackback Though HBO was quick to cancel low-rated drama John From Cincinnati (related story here), the premium cable network has decided to go ahead with another season of the similarly low-rated […]
That was my biggest complaint as well Bobby, the acting was just too much to get over. I was really surprised by it too, since Deadwood was such an amazingly acted series. I just didn’t expect JFC to suffer in that respect.
you are freakin’ kidding me!!! That sooo sucks ass! What a great show…gotchya thinking about the what ifs, and the awe of it all. They really should rethink that, and bring it back!!! If they would actually bring shows back for more than 1 season, people would have a chance to watch it and give them the ratings they want…they aren’t giving it a chance to give them what they want….RATINGS!!
I CANT BELIEVE THEY ARE CANCELING ONE OF THE COOLEST SHOWS MADE. I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THE START OF THE SECOND SEASON TO START WITH GREAT ANTICIPATION.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THE CHARACTER ‘BUTCHY YOST’
I AM TOTALLY BUMMED TO FIND THIS SHOW WILL BE NO LONGER SHOWN
Deadwood lived up to its title – what a pretentious piece of pseudo-authentic twaddle. John From Cincinnati on the other hand was extraordinary – closer to Twin Peaks and/or Six Feet Under, with the potential to surpass the former if not the latter. Whoever was criticizing the acting knows nothing about acting – it was superb ensemble acting.
A true tragedy that JFC has been cancelled. My guess is it was the cost of the large, experienced cast and crew that did it in along with the dodgy ratings. They could at least have tried to do a 2-hour special to give us some idea what the long-term goal for the series was but I guess that would be asking for too much.
Oh well – the HBO precipitous decline continues in full force. Hopefully people will stop watching and they’ll be forced to revert to their world-beating ways again someday.
This is all very unfortunate. I really enjoyed the show.
