The much hyped debut of soccer superstar David Beckham with the Los Angeles Galaxy brought strong ratings on Saturday night, with the program attracting nearly 1.5 million viewers (1.47 million), well above the 1.1 million viewers who watched the April 4, 1996 MLS premiere matchup of DC United against the San Jose Clash.

Playing late in the game for only 16 minutes was enough to draw the respectably audience and the program was the nights most watched among ad-supported basic-cable with M18-49 and M25-54.

The game drew a 1.0 national coverage ratings, with an audience of 947,000 households.
