The CW has decided against bringing back Gilmore Girls for what would have been its eighth season, making the announcement jointly with the show’s studio Warner Bros. Television.
The news comes after weeks of rumors ranging from contract breakdowns between the two stars and even the possibility of a shortened 13 episode order.
“Announcing the final season of ‘Gilmore Girls’ is truly a sad moment for everyone at The CW and Warner Bros. Television. This series helped define a network and created a fantastic, storybook world featuring some of television’s most memorable, lovable characters,” the network said in a joint statement with the studio.
“We thank Amy Sherman-Palladino, Dan Palladino, Dave Rosenthal, the amazing cast led by Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel as well as the producers, writers and crew for giving us this delightful gem for the past seven years. We would also like to thank the critics and ‘Gilmore’ fans for their passionate support and promise to give this series the send off it deserves.”
The series finale will air Tuesday, May 15 at 8:00/7:00c. Plans for the 2007/2008 TV season will be made two days later at the networks Upfronts.
I am seriously heartbroken to learn of the cancellation of Gilmore Girls. So much hope was poured into keeping the show alive for season 8 by the fans. I did not become a fan until the reruns hit the air on the ABC Family Channel. I have been a devoted watcher and DVD buyer ever since. Amy and Dan did a great job creating this masterpiece. Lauren has been mesmerizing. Alexis has come a long way. Rosenthal needn’t get the credit the network is supplying. He could have done so much more by ending the ridiculous Loralie and Christopher set up earlier than he did. I think the fans could actually have swallowed the good-bye of their beloved show if he had thought harder about what he was doing. Now I think the fans will be left in limbo. Closure even with a simple kiss will not do justice.
