Veronica Mars News March 16, 2007 1:31 pm

Some interesting Veronica Mars news broke over the past couple hours pertaining to the future of the series.

On Thursday night, EOnline’s Kristin reported that she had heard from several reliable sources that The CW had decided against bringing back Veronica Mars for a fourth season. Kristin wrote this on her site:

The day we’ve all dreaded has come, tubers.

With actual tears in my eyes, I must tell you that I’ve heard from several solid sources that the CW has decided not to bring Veronica Mars back for a fourth season.

Though official word has not yet come down from the network, I did hear from creator Rob Thomas earlier this week, who told me things weren’t looking good: “I’ve never been less certain of our fate. I’m afraid I’ve gone from cautiously optimistic to something less than that.”

More on this later. I’m just too distraught to write more right now.

Though, later last night, Kristin wrote another entry on her site detailing exactly what’s going on. It doesn’t appear a decision has been made yet on the future of the series (Rob Thomas was quoted as saying: “If we’re canceled, I certainly don’t know about it.”).

What has happened, however, is that Rob Thomas (the creator of the show) is putting together a special “five- to six-minute featurette of a new version of Veronica Mars, which is one of three options the CW is considering for next season.”

Kristin continues discussing the other options:

2. This new Veronica version takes place four years in the future, and features Veronica as a full-fledged FBI agent. (This morning’s Hollywood Reporter incorrectly reports that in the new featurette, Veronica is still in the FBI Academy.)

3. Kristen Bell is the only castmember who is part of this “FBI years” trailer/featurette. It is not yet known which other castmembers would come on board if the CW chooses this option. Veronica‘s current cast and crew were informed of the featurette yesterday (hence, the widespread panic and cancellation rumors running rampant—and my panic attack).

4. For better or worse, Veronica‘s fate has not yet been decided. So, keep reading and show your support below in the comments section. (By the way, never before have I seen comments pile up so fast and so strong anywhere on E! Online. Keep ’em coming!)

So, no need to worry about cancellation quite yet.

A current return date for Veronica Mars is set for May 1st.
