In press releases during CES, both backers of HD DVD and Blu-ray have announced sales data for their respective formats. But there is no clear data on the Blu-ray side.Sony and the BDA (Blu-ray Disc Association) counts 1M units sold through of Blu-ray players (they are including all versions of the Sony Playstation 3 console as Blu-ray units). As I’ve said in other posts here, its very hard for anyone to gauge just how many of those units are being used for playing Blu-ray movies.
In a release by Toshiba, they have announced that 175,000 HD DVD players have been sold through as of January 5th in North America. (That data includes stand-alone players by Toshiba and their partners, as well as the Xbox 360 Add-on and HD DVD enabled laptops and desktop PCs).
Toshiba also announced an impressive attach rate of 28 HD DVD titles per player.
Interesting stats!
