Broadcast TV Ratings for Tuesday, August 21, 2007

America’s Got Talent, which was up by wide margins over last year’s finale, gave NBC an easy victory.

NBC finished in first place for the evening with a 7.4/13 household rating/share, 12.29 million viewers and a 3.9/11 rating/share among adults 18-49.

  • Last Week:
    • 6.0/10 HH rating [#1]
    • 9.45M viewers [#1]
    • 2.8/9 A18-49 rating [#1]
  • 8:00-10:00 p.m.: America’s Got Talent (8.4/14 HH rating/share, 13.87M viewers, 4.1/12 A18-49 rating/share) dominated its two-hour time period and the night overall, with solid growth from the week prior and an impressive improvement over last season’s finale.  Year-to-year, the finale, which saw ventriloquist Terry Fator walk away with the win, was up by 1.82 million, or 15% among viewers, 15% among households and 17% among adults 18-49.
    • Season finale comparison (August 16, 2006):
      • Households – 7.3/12 to 8.4/14
      • Viewers – 12.05M to 13.87M
      • Adults 18-49 – 3.5/10 to 4.1/12
    • Week-to-week numbers (fast nationals):
      • Households – 6.7/12 to 8.4/14
      • Viewers – 10.79M to 13.87M
      • Adults 18-49 – 3.2/10 to 4.1/12
  • 10:00 p.m.: Though The Singing Bee (5.5/10 HH rating/share, 9.13M viewers, 3.3/9 A18-49 rating/share) had a much stronger lead-in, the program failed to take advantage of it, as it was actually down week-to-week among viewers (-670,000 or -7%) and households (also -7%).  Though there was slight growth among adults 18-49 (+3%), this is obviously a tad bit disappointing given the shows failure to grow with such a strong lead-in.
    • Week-to-week-to-week numbers (fast nationals – 9:30 p.m.):
      • Households – 5.9/10 to 5.5/10
      • Viewers – 9.80M to 9.13M
      • Adults 18-49 – 3.2/9 to 3.3/9

CBS followed in second place for the evening with a 4.5/8 household rating/share and 6.64 million viewers, but was tied for second among adults 18-49 with a 2.2/6 rating/share.

  • Last Week:

    • 6.77 viewers [#2]

      • Households – 6.1/11
      • Viewers – 9.25
      • Adults 18-49 – 2.7/9
  • 9:00 p.m.: Big Brother 8 (4.8/8 HH rating/share, 7.29M viewers, 3.1/8 A18-49 rating/share) though most always recently the network’s top-rated show among adults 18-49, managed a first place finish across all main categories on this night.  Of course it helps when the programming surrounding you is in repeats.  Having said that though, that’s about as positive as we can get, as the network was off slightly from the week prior.
    • Week-to-week numbers (fast nationals):
      • Households – 5.0/8 to 4.8/8

Fox followed in fourth place for the evening with a 2.6/4 household rating/share, 4.03 million viewers and a 1.6/5 rating/share among adults 18-49.

  • Last Week:
    • 2.4/4 HH rating [#4]
    • 3.63M viewers [#4]
    • 1.3/4 A18-49 rating [#4]
  • 8:00 p.m.: On the Lot (1.6/3 HH rating/share, 2.48M viewers, 1.2/4 A18-49 rating/share)•     continues merrily on despite its incredibly low ratings.  But, there was actually some good news this week!  The series was up by 420,000 or 20% among viewers, 14% among households and 33% among adults 18-49.  Keep in mind though that when you’re working with numbers this low, increases in that range aren’t uncommon every once in a while.
    • Week-to-week numbers (fast nationals):
      • Households – 1.4/3 to 1.6/3
      • Viewers – 2.06M to 2.48M

The CW finished in fifth place for the evening with a 0.9/1 household rating/share, 1.26 million viewers and a 0.5/1 rating/share among adults 18-49.

  • Last Week:
    • 0.9/2 HH rating [#5]
    • 1.26M viewers [#5]
    • 0.5/1 A18-49 rating [#5]
  • Last place seems unavoidable for The CW on every day of the week, except for Friday’s (where WWE Smackdown performs well).  Tonight was no different, with the network very far back in last place for the evening.
  • 8:00 p.m.: A repeat of Gilmore Girls (1.0/2 HH rating/share, 1.40M viewers, 0.6/2 A18-49 rating/share).
  • 9:00 p.m.: And a repeat of Beauty and the Geek (0.8/1 HH rating/share, 1.04M viewers, 0.4/1 A18-49 rating/share).
