ABC has put in a script order for a new TV series based on the supernatural movie The Witches of Eastwick.  The pilot will be written by Dawson’s Creek writer Maggie Friedman.

This marks the third attempt at a TV version of the 1987 film (and book of which it was based), which starred Jack Nicholson, Cher, Susan Sarandon and Michelle Pfeiffer.  In 1992, Warner Bros. TV commissioned writers Carlton Cuse and Jeffrey Boam to develop The Witches of Eastwick for NBC and in 2002, Fox developed a version along with Warner Bros. TV titled Eastwick, from excecutive producer Jim Leonard and writers Jon Cowan and Robert Rovner.

Four Consecutive First Place Weekends for “The Dark Knight”; Now Third Highest Grossing Movie of All-Time August 10, 2008 11:14 pm

Posted by Rosario T. Calabria in Box Office, Movies, News, The Dark Knight.
add a comment

The Dark Knight held off comedy Pineapple Express over the weekend, taking in an estimated $26.03M from 4,025 theaters to take first place for the fourth consecutive weekend.  That’s a drop of just 39% from the weekend prior.  The film’s total domestic gross now stands at $441.54M, good enough to put it into third place on the all-time list, just below #2 Star Wars ($461M).  As I noted last week, I’m going to continue tracking the performance of The Dark Knight and my estimate has widened slightly to $496-547M total domestic box office (Although Titanic’s $600.79M record is unlikely, it’s not entirely out of the question just yet.  It’s really going to depend on how the movie performs over the coming weeks).

In terms of overseas box office, the film has tacked on an additional $263.1M, growing its worldwide cume to over $700M at $704.64M.

Pineapple Express, meanwhile, grossed $22.4M over the weekend, but the film actually opened on Wednesday so it’s taken in $40.47M over its first five days of release. A good sum for an R-rated comedy.

Click through the jump for the rest of the top 10.

TrekMovie got their hands on four new posters featuring the rest of the cast of J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek.  The posters are being given away at Creation’s VegasCon 08 along with the prior four posters that were given away at Comic-Con two weeks ago.  Just like those prior four posters, which featured the principal cast, when combined the cast photos form the classic Star Trek emblem.  Click the image at the right for a closer look at the new posters featuring John Cho (Sulu), Simon Pegg (Scotty), Karl Urban (McCoy) and Anton Yelchin (Chekov).

Synopsis
Mission: Impossible III director and Alias creator J.J. Abrams resurrects the classic science fiction franchise created by Gene Roddenberry with this feature film that embraces the rich history of the influential television and film series while also exploring some uncharted territory. Heroes star Zachary Quinto assumes the role of the Federation Starfleet lieutenant and Vulcan made famous in the original series by Leonard Nimoy (who also appears in an older incarnation of his original role), Spock, with Anton Yelchin stepping into the role of USS Enterprise navigator Pavel Chekov, Zoe Saldana assuming the role of communications officer Uhura, Simon Pegg keeping the ship in top shape as chief engineer Montgomery Scott (aka “Scotty”), and Eric Bana tormenting the benevolent space explorers as the villainous Nero. Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle co-star John Cho also boards the Enterprise as staff psychiatrist Hikaru Sulu, with Chris Pine and Karl Urban assuming the legendary roles of Captain Kirk and Leonard “Bones” McCoy, respectively.

Star Trek hits theaters on December 25, 2008.

Imagi has released a batch of CG-rendered concept art, plus a logo (picture above) for their upcoming computer animated big-screen adaptation of Gatchaman.  Check out the photos after the jump.

Synopsis
Adapted from a best-selling manga of the same name — which, in turn, became a popular animated cartoon in the early 1970s — the 3D, CG-rendered anime feature Gatchaman constitutes an action-fantasy about a magical band of five heroes who take on enemies determined to seize control of the Earth’s basic natural resources. The film — produced by L.A. and Hong Kong-headquartered Imagi Studios — followed Imagi’s much-publicized recruitment of four A-list Hollywood animation producers, and that company’s production of the U.S. box-office blockbuster TMNT (2007).

Gatchaman hits theaters in 2009.

The SCI-FI Channel has announced that they’ll be airing a brand new Battlestar Galactica TV movie in 2009, following the conclusion of the series’ final 10 episodes.  The movie will then be released on DVD.  Series star Edward James Olmos will direct and Jane Espenson will write.  Shooting begins at the end of this month and so far the cast includes Michael Trucco, Aaron Douglas and Dean Stockwell.  More cast should be announced in the coming weeks.  Here’s the synopsis (the press release follows after the jump):

Starting before the events of the miniseries, our story focuses on familiar characters including Cylon Number One, known as Cavil (Stockwell), Resistance Leader Sam T. Anders (Trucco) and Chief Galen Tyrol (Douglas). In the beginning, the Cylons had a plan, but it didn’t account for one thing: survivors. During the chaotic aftermath of the destruction, two powerful Cylon agents struggle with plots and priorities on the human ships that got away, and among the resistance fighters who were left behind.
