Here are the prime time ratings results for the broadcast networks, followed by the ratings for the cable networks.

ABC finished in first place from 9:30 to 11:00 PM with 9.670M viewers and was first in adults 25-54, the key demographic for news programs. NBC followed in second place with its coverage from 10:00 to 11:00 PM with 7.00M viewers tuning in. Which leaves CBS for last place with its 10:00 to 11:00 PM coverage which attracted 6.30M viewers.

Among the cable networks from 8:00 PM to 11:00 PM (prime time), FNC was first with 3.06M viewers while CNN followed in second place with a very close 2.97M viewers and MSNBC was last with 1.95M viewers.

Tallying that all up comes to about 31M viewers tuning in to election night coverage across all major broadcast and cable nets, up from about 26M in 2002.

Comedy Central showed up very well with their special “Midterm Midtacular” from 11:00 PM to 12:00 AM which attracted about 1.8M viewers.

NBC takes the top spot yet again, with ABC and CBS following. NBC was the only network to improve its total viewers average over the week, and it also posted gains in households and adults 25-54.

It’s also worth noting that CBS isn’t doing all that much better than Bob Schieffer’s last week back in August of this year (7.242M with Scheiffer to 7.294M with Couric).

All three programs improved their audience from the week prior, but placements remain the same with NBC finishing in first, followed by ABC and then CBS.

The Katie Couric experiment seems to have failed, as viewers from the same frame last season when Bob Schieffer was the host are virtually identical to the current audience (7.338 million for Schieffer vs. 7.332 million for Couric).

NBC finishes in first, followed by ABC and then CBS. Both NBC and ABC increased from last week in total viewers and the key A25-54 demo, while CBS decreased in both categories.

CBS is still up nearly 20% from its average last season, while NBC and ABC are down in the single digits.

Much was made of Katie Couric coming to CBS for the evening news, and most assumed the move would put CBS on top of the evening news ratings hunt.

The first broadcast of CBS Evening News with Katie Couric averaged 13.59M viewers, but ever since then ratings have been dropping (the 2nd broadcast lost 22%) and NBC’s Nightly News with Brian Williams has now passed her for first place in weekly ratings.

Here are the ratings for the week of September 18th to the 22nd:

NBC – Nightly News with Brian Williams

  • 5.7/12 HH Rating
  • 2.1 A25-54 Rating
  • 8,182,000 Viewers

CBS – Evening News with Katie Couric

  • 5.5/11 HH Rating
  • 2.1 A25-54 Rating
  • 7,690,000 Viewers

ABC – World News with Charles Gibson
