NBC gives full season order to “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip” November 10, 2006 4:50 pm

NBC has gone ahead and ordered the back nine of its freshman drama/comedy which has been struggling as of late.

Citing the shows strong ratings among upscale households as one of the reasons, NBC hopes the vote of confidence in the expensive show will increase its viewership and justify its full season renewal.

“I am pleased to show our support for this outstanding and ambitious effort from executive producers Aaron Sorkin and Thomas Schlamme,” said Kevin Reilly, President NBC Entertainment. “From the start, they have delivered the superb show that we wanted. The critical support has been rock-solid and there is a passionate core audience. We can’t wait for what’s going to come in the remainder of the season.”

“Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip” is averaging a 4.0 rating, 9 share in adults 18-49 and 9.8 million viewers overall (through November 6) and has increased its rating week-to-week in 18-49 with each of its last two telecasts. “Studio 60” has consistently delivered some of the highest audience concentrations among all primetime network series in such key upscale categories as adults 18-49 living in homes with $75,000-plus and $100,000-plus incomes and in homes where the head of household has four or more years of college.

ABC has given freshman drama “Men In Trees” a full season order, picking up the back nine.  In addition to that vote of confidence in the low rated by critical and fan favorite, ABC has moved the series to the plush post-“Grey’s Anatomy” time slot (Thursday at 10:00 PM) effective November 30th.

The series has averaged 7.32M viewers with a 2.2/7 among adults 18-49 in its former Friday at 9:00 PM time slot.

ABC wins the night in households and viewers with its strong performance by “Dancing with the Stars”, while Fox takes the win in adults 18-49 with “House”. ABC also comes away the victor in their election night coverage.

CBS greenlights new pirate-themed reality show November 6, 2006 7:59 pm

CBS is teaming up with reality hit producer Mark Burnett (“Survivor”, “The Apprentice”, “The Contender”, “Rockstar”) for a pirate-themed reality series with the hopes of a premiere launch in the summer of 2007.

The program will take place on both land and at sea, and be faithful to certain pirate related traditions.

CBS has confirmed the order for the series, but not other details about the project are known.

A first for daytime television soaps, NBC will stream full episodes of “Passions” at their NBC.com website in a free ad-supported format.

“As we have shown with our prime-time programming, adding digital extensions to our shows is immensely popular,” said Jeff Gaspin, president, NBC Universal Cable Entertainment, Digital Content, and Cross-Network Strategy in announcing the move. “We anticipate similar results with Passions, because this daypart has such loyal viewers.”

The episodes will be available at 9:00 PM Eastern on the day of their first airing, and will stay online for one week at which point they will be replaced by the next episode.

NBC, using the flex schedule clause in their contract with the NFL, has decided to switch the game that was currently scheduled for a new match up.

Viewers will be seeing the San Diego Chargers and the Denver Broncos that night (both 6-2 teams) instead of the previously scheduled and currently sub-500 teams of Washington Redskins and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Redskins/Buccaneers game moves will become a regional CBS game.

Even though the third season hasn’t even aired yet (set for Monday, January 1st at 8:00 PM), ABC Family has decided to give an early fourth season renewal to one of their key original programs on the basis of faith that fans of the show will continue to tune in.

“We think our passionate Wildfire fans are going to love the new season – this season’s going to be all about who will Kris choose, Matt or Junior, said Paul Lee, president, ABC Family. Were enjoying the creative direction of season three so much we saw no reason to wait on ordering season four.”

“We couldnt be happier about ABC Familys tremendous vote of confidence in the show with this early season four pick-up, said Kevin Beggs, president of television programming and production, Lionsgate. Weve enjoyed great support from the network and look forward to an exciting new year.”

A sneak-peak of the third season will be viewable on ABC Family’s website at http://www.abcfamily.com/wildfire starting December 1st.

Production on the fourth season will begin in January of next year.

NBC takes the evening in households, viewers and adults 18-49 on the strength of its “Sunday Night Football” presentation, while ABC and CBS stay competitive. “Desperate Housewive” was the most watched program on the night.

NBC takes the top spot yet again, with ABC and CBS following. NBC was the only network to improve its total viewers average over the week, and it also posted gains in households and adults 25-54.

It’s also worth noting that CBS isn’t doing all that much better than Bob Schieffer’s last week back in August of this year (7.242M with Scheiffer to 7.294M with Couric).

“Monster House” leads the pack of newly released DVDs November 5, 2006 1:26 am

“Monster House” took the top spot among DVD sales for the week ending October 29th. This marks the second week that an animated film took the top spot in DVD sales.

Other new releases for the week that made the top 20 were “Nacho Libre” at #3, “An American Haunting” at #4, “Slither” at #6, “The O.C.: Season 3” at #10 and “The Addams Family: Season 1” at #12.

Rounding out the top 10 then were “Over the Hedge” at #2, “The Break-up” at #5, “Click” at #7, “The Little Mermaid: Special Edition” at #8 and “The Omen” at #9.

Among the top 10 TV DVD sales for the week, the aforementioned tv shows above were followed by the new releases of “Justice League Unlimited: Season 1” at #3, “The L Word: Season 3” at #4 and “Macgyver: The Final Season” at #5.

Rounding out the top 10 of TV DVDs were “Grey’s Anatomy: Season 1” at #6 (the series has been in the top 10 of TV DVDs for a remarkable 34 weeks now), “Charmed: Season 6” at #7, “Grey’s Anatomy: Season 2” at #8, “Scrubs: Season 4” at #9 and “Lost: Season 2” at #10.

Blockbuster will begin testing rentals and sales of High-Defintion DVDs November 5, 2006 1:06 am

Beginning this month Blockbuster, the nations largest rental outlet, will start testing high-definition dvd rentals and sales at about 250 of its stores, chosen by the basis of where early adopters are said to be.

The outlets will carry about 40 titles of each current high-def format; Blu-ray Disc and HD DVDs, with prices set at an equal setting.

“It’s a careful selection process,” Blockbuster spokesman Randy Hargrove said of store experiments. “We’re looking at DVD adoption rate and hardware penetration. We’ll continue to watch the market and monitor to see where additional expansion will be appropriate.”

High-definition rentals is not new to Blockbuster, as their Blockbuster Online brand has been offering both formats on their site for quite some time.

Fox has pulled two new series’; “The Rich List” and “Happy Hour” from their schedules due to low ratings.

Next week a special airing of “The O.C.” will fill in the hour left over by the removal of “The Rich List” while an extra episode of “‘Til Death” will occupy the timeslot freed up by “Happy Hour”.

“The Rich List” aired only one episode and struggled to make it out the gate with a dismal 4.14M viewers and a 1.5/4 A18-49 rating.

“Happy Hour” began its run back on September 7th with 5.97M viewers.  It aired a total of four episodes with an average of 4.98M viewers, with the most recent airing this past Thursday drawing only 3.18M viewers with a 1.4/3 A18-49 rating.

Fox has scheduled a special 8:00PM Wednesday airing of “The O.C.” for next week.  The series will also air in its normal Thursday at 9:00 PM timeslot the following evening.

In The Gringos episode of THE O.C. airing Wednesday, Nov. 8 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT), Ryan leaves Orange County to put an end to his turmoil, but he comes up empty on his search. Meanwhile, Seth acts like a jackass and finds some new friends (including guest star Steve-O) in Mexico who help him find what hes looking for; Harbor Schools dean forces Kaitlin and Julie to work together on a clothing drive; Julie is ostracized by the Cohens when they learn what shes been up to; and Taylor drops in unannounced on Summer, who continues to separate herself from everything Orange County

Thanksgiving morning finds the Cohen family still dealing with what happened in Mexico in The Cold Turkey episode of THE O.C. Thursday, Nov. 9 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT). Sandy makes a deal to help Volchok but lets Ryan intervene and finally settle the score. Wondering if she can deal with Newport, Summer packs to come home for the holiday. And Julie cant deal with Kaitlin or Dr. Roberts and finds herself alone for most of Thanksgiving.

The fourth season premiere, which aired Thursday night to weak numbers, is available free on demand on Fox’s MySpace page and on Fox Television Station Groups MyFoxLocal websites.

On October 31st starting at 11:00 PM and running to 5:00AM on November 1st, Sci Fi aired a special 6 hour live “Ghost Hunters” program.

Ghost Hunters Live revisited the notoriously haunted Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado for a real-time Halloween-night investigation. As the legend goes, Stephen King took up residence at the Stanley while writing his best-selling novel The Shining and the spooky goings on at the hotel reportedly served as the inspiration for his best-selling tome.

The program averaged a 0.9 household rating and 944,000 total viewers, 577,000 P25-54, 698,000 P18-49 from 11:00PM to 5:00AM.

The program registered its largest audience in its first hour; 1.3 household rating and 1.4 million total viewers.

Those ratings in the time period (11:00PM to 5:00AM)  registered gains of 80% in households, 119% in P25-54, 174% in P18-49 and 107% in total viewers.

It was the highest rated 11:00PM to 5:00AM period since January of 2002.

The October 31st doubleheader between the Chicago Bulls/Miami Heat and Phoenix Suns/Los Angeles drew the largest audience for a premiere night of basketball on TNT since the 2003-04 season, averaging a 1.7 household rating. That was up a strong 38% from last year’s opening-night doubleheader, which averaged a 1.3 household rating.

TNT also posted major gains in the networks key demos, including men 18-49 (988,000) where it was up 39% from last year’s 712,000.

“Dexter” renewed for a second season November 3, 2006 6:13 pm

Showtime has ordered a second season of its new show “Dexter”. The series premiered with 603,000 viewers on Sunday, October 1 at 10:00PM with a solid 443,000 viewers tuning in for the immediate repeat at 11:00PM, bringing the total to 1.04M for the first episode.  Those numbers were Showtime’s best since the premiere of “Fat Actress” back in March of 2005.

The series has continued to average about 2M viewers a week when tallying all airings on the Showtime networks.

Production will begin on 12 new episodes in early 2007 for a 2nd season premiere of Summer 2007.

CBS sneaks by ABC in households and viewers while ABC settles for 1st in adults 18-49 as “Criminal Minds” beats “Lost” head-to-head. “The Rich List” opens with a very poor performance.

“Reba” will return to television via The CW November 2, 2006 1:43 pm

The CW has resurrected the comedy “Reba”. It will come back starting November 19th and occupy the Sunday at 7:30 PM timeslot leading into “7th Heaven”.

A repeat of the previous episode will also air that same evening at 7:00 PM, leading into new episodes every week.

The series was The WB’s highest rated sitcom for the entire five years it aired on the network.

ABC Orders 4 Additional Episodes of “What About Brian” November 2, 2006 1:38 pm

ABC has given the sophomore drama “What About Brian” an addition four episode order, bringing its season 2 run to 17 episodes.

The show has been solid, though not spectacular for ABC, averaging 6.86M viewers a night with a 3.0/8 A18-49 rating in its current Monday at 10 PM timeslot.

The series has shown great retention rates out of “The Bachelor” in viewers at around 85%, but most especially in adults 18-49, where it is retaining a very strong 94% of its lead-in.

Previously put on life support in a Saturday night timeslot, NBC has decided to pull the new series off the air due to low ratings.

When the series was announced, NBC had promised that they would stick to the show for at least the entire first ordered season (13 episodes) due to the show’s serialized nature, which is why instead of pulling it outright, they moved it to the Saturday timeslot.

But NBC couldn’t justify the cost of keeping it on the schedule, and have decided instead to pull it.  The most recent Saturday night airing delivered only 3.71M viewers with a 1.2/4 A18-49 rating.

There is good news though for fans who have continued to watch. According to TV Guide, all 13 episodes will be filmed, and NBC will stream the remaining eight episodes for free on their website at NBC.com beginning this Friday.
