Powered by a better than average performance from Dateline, NBC took first place on Friday night among households, just narrowly beating CBS, which took the night among both viewers and adults 18-49 thanks to its NCAA Basketball Tournament coverage.

Elsewhere on the evening, a new timeslot for Canterbury’s Law didn’t help the series in terms of ratings.  ‘Law’ was off by 15% (-840,000) among viewers and 29% among adults 18-49 from its last newly aired episode in its original Monday night timeslot.

The two-hour season finale of The Celebrity Apprentice powered NBC to a rare win last night among households, viewers and adults 18-49.  Not only did ‘Apprentice’ improve significantly over last week’s numbers, but it showed an even more impressive improvement over last season’s finale (which aired on a Sunday last April).  Compared to last season’s finale, the series was up by a whopping 4.10 million/51% among viewers and 41% among adults 18-49.

NBC also won the 8:00 p.m. hour earlier in the night courtesy an improved Deal or No Deal.

Elsewhere on the evening, CBS’s coverage of the NCAA Basketball Tournament: Semi-finals fell significantly below the comparable games last year.  The coverage was down by 4.62 million/32% among viewers and 30% among adults 18-49 (last year’s semi-finals took place on Saturday, March 31, 2007).

Over on ABC, another set of back-to-back original episodes of Miss Guided were off just slightly from last week’s numbers, while Eli Stone took a small hit without the support of an original episode of Lost leading into it (-800,000/-11% among viewers and -17% among adults 18-49).

And rounding out the rest of the night, Fox got its usual solid performance from its two gameshows ‘5th Grader’ and ‘Lyrics’, while The CW also remained mostly even from the week prior for original episodes of Smallville and Reaper.

Fox had no trouble with its competition last night as the combination of The Moment of Truth and American Idol easily propelled the network to another dominant Wednesday night win.

Elsewhere on the evening, second place was very competitive with NBC and CBS coming within 160,000 viewers of each other (NBC on top among viewers and households) and ABC sneaking in to steal a second place finish among adults 18-49, while NBC and CBS tied for third in the demo. Among total audience, ABC was fourth, remaining mostly even from the week prior.

And lastly, the CW’s flagship series America’s Next Top Model continued its below-average performance as its year-to-year numbers remain steeply down.

A two-hour edition of Dancing With the Stars kept ABC well in front on Monday night in terms of total viewership, well outpacing its nearest competitor CBS by nearly 4 million viewers (3.7M).  The 10:00 p.m. hour hurt ABC though, which fell to second place on the evening among adults 18-49, behind CBS.

CBS was paced by another strong showing from its comedy block from 8:00-10:00 (the Britney Spears guest-starring episode of How I Met Your Mother posted series highs) and the return of CSI Miami at 10:00, which improved upon its last newly aired episode (which aired in January) by 1.03 million or 7% among viewers and 12% among adults 18-49.

Elsewhere on the evening NBC and Fox battled for third place, with the two networks tying for third among adults 18-49 (Fox getting the better of NBC among total audience) and The CW sank to a barely visible last place on the evening with only 1.32M viewers tuning in to watch the network.

CBS and ABC shared the top spot on Easter Sunday, with CBS coming out on top among households and ABC ahead among both viewers and adults 18-49.

CBS was strengthened by a one-hour overrun of NCAA Tournament coverage (the nights most-watched program among households and viewers), while ABC saw solid numbers from its reality lineup, including the nights most-watched program among adults 18-49 Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.

CBS’s coverage of the first round of the NCAA Tournament kept the network in first place.  Year-to-year declines were minimized (though that could change when finals are released) at 1.13 million or 12% among viewers and 3% among adults 18-49 (compared against the 8:00-11:00 p.m. time period last year).

It was a very competitive Thursday night, as NBC, CBS, ABC and FOX all finished within 750,000 viewers of each other.

The reason for the closeness was a reduced showing from CBS, which aired the first round of the NCAA tournament. CBS was off by 2.03 million or 19% among viewers and 13% among adults 18-49 from last year’s round 1 coverage, allowing NBC to take first place among both households and viewers, but the network was third among adults 18-49.

Despite the lower than average numbers for CBS, the network still managed to take first among adults 18-49, holding off ABC who was a competitive second place in the demo.

In time period debut news Miss Guided fell off by a disappointing 2.94 million or 32% among viewers and 19% among adults 18-49 from its series debut back on Tuesday. The weak showing bled into Lost, which took another weekly dip, falling by 7% among viewers and 10% among adults 18-49, while Eli Stone remained consistent from the week prior.

And rounding out the rest of the evening, Fox saw a slight drop from Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader, but Don’t Forget the Lyrics! kept the network within its normal viewer levels, while on The CW Smallville turned out a below-average performance, but that didn’t hurt Reaper, which saw a nice bump from the week prior.

Fox’s American Idol easily carried the network to first place on the evening, while The Moment of Truth did well starting off the night for the network.

Elsewhere on the evening, NBC held off CBS for second place among households, though fell further behind among viewers and adults 18-49, while CBS got okay results from a special Wednesday edition of Survivor (because of the NCAA Tournament tonight–Thursday).

ABC followed up in fourth place, and The CW in last place.  Though America’s Next Top Model remained even in viewership from the week prior, the series is still off by double-digits year-to-year.

ABC’s Dancing With the Stars went up against Fox’s American Idol, with AI, predictably, coming out on top.

The series premiere of Miss Guided on ABC tuned in mixed results. It’s overall audience was fairly solid (just 10,000 viewers shy of 10 million), but it’s retention numbers from its Dancing With the Stars lead-in could have been much better (60% among viewers and 72% among adults 18-49).

Elsehwere on the evening The Biggest Loser on NBC held steady in the face of the increased competition and The CW’s One Tree Hill rebounded nicely from last week’s poor showing, growing by 17% among viewers and 27% among adults 18-49.

ABC’s Dancing With the Stars returned to give ABC a big boost, drawing an audience nearly identical to the series’ last new season premieres, and giving the network a comfortable first place finish among total viewership and adults 18-49.

CBS, however, managed to get a good chunk of the viewing audience last night thanks to impressive numbers (especially among adults 18-49) from its returning comedy series’ The Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother and Two and a Half Men (which helped to boost its lead-out The New Adventures of Old Christine by a an impressive 1.83 million or 19% among viewers and 26% among adults 18-49).

Elsewhere on the evening, NBC dropped to third place, though the performance of its lineup was mostly on par with the week prior, with the exception of My Dad Is Better Than Your Dad which sank by 2.13 million or 31% among viewers and 29% among adults 18-49.

On Fox, Canterbury Law lost a significant portion of its already low series premiere numbers from the week prior, but New Amsterdam was less affected.

And lastly, The CW’s new season of Pussycat Dolls Presents continues to prove that the series was just a one-hit wonder, as it failed to attract much more than 1.5 million viewers.

ABC led the field Sunday night, but the network’s two new series Oprah’s Big Give and Here Come the Newlyweds continue to fade. The 9:00-11:00 time period in which both shows air was down nearly 2 million (1.99M) or 19% among viewers and 25% among adults 18-49 from the week prior as both shows (individually) failed to reach 10 million viewers.

Overall since their series premieres, ‘Big Give’ is down 5.97M or 38% among viewers and 32% among adults 18-49 and ‘Newlyweds’ is down 3.14M or 31% among viewers and 29% among A18-49.

Elsewhere on the evening, CBS and NBC remained consistent in second place and third place respectively, while Fox stayed back in fourth among total viewers, but managed a solid second place finish among A18-49 thanks to its comedy (repeat and original) lineup.

The CW, meanwhile, was nearly invisible in last place on the evening, with original episodes of Everybody Hates Chris and Aliens in America drawing just over 1 million (1.12M) and under 1 million (0.87M) respectively.

Keep in mind that The CW renewed Everybody Hates Chris. That should tell you all you need to know about the condition the struggling network is in.

ABC’s Lost won the night among the key A18-49 demographic, but it wasn’t enough to hold off CBS, which was the nights most-watched network among households, viewers and adults 18-49, overall.

With American Idol not airing, the majority of viewers migrated to CBS, which saw its 8:00-10:00 time period (which included the nights most-watched program Survivor) increase by 10% among viewers and 6% among adults 18-49.

NBC’s night was on par with prior performances, while Fox saw solid ratings out of its two returning competition series’ Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? and Don’t Forget the Lyrics!, enough to put the network in second place for the evening among total audience.

Over on The CW, Smallville returned after a three week hiatus stronger than where it left off, while Reaper premiered in its new time slot (after a three month break) and had no loss of viewership. In fact, despite the series’ viewership still under 3 million viewers, it increased over its last newly aired episode by 7% among viewers.

Retention for Reaper out of Smallville was 71% among households, 74% among viewers and 75% among adults 18-49. That’s only slightly lower than Supernatural’s most recent retention figures: 75%, 81% and 80% respectively.

Considering the long layoff and the new time slot, this is an okay performance for Reaper.

Fox easily won another Wednesday night thanks to a solid performance by The Moment of Truth, and the always reliable American Idol.

Elsewhere on the evening, NBC took an unexpected second place, thanks to strong outings from its lead-off series Deal or No Deal and episodes of Law & Order: Criminal Intent and Law & Order.

The CW’s once reliable America’s Next Top Model continues to draw below-average crowds, something the struggling network simply can’t afford to happen.

A two-hour edition of American Idol dominated the television lineup.  Don’t believe me?  The network out-performed the combined numbers of the other four nets on the evening by viewers (29.33M vs. 22.93M), households (16.7 rating vs. 15.3 rating) and adults 18-49 (10.8 rating vs. 7.6 rating).

Pretty impressive.

In season finale/season premiere news, the seventh season finale of According to Jim was off by 25% from last season’s finale, while The CW’s Beauty and the Geek got off to a terrible start.  The series was off by 1.5 million or 44% among viewers and 47% among adults 18-49.

CBS, with a mostly repeat filled lineup, managed to take a strong first place finish on the evening.

Elsewhere on the evening, NBC secured a second place finish with solid outings from Deal or No Deal and Medium.

On Fox, the series premiere of Canterbury’s Law got off to a poor start with the key A18-49 demo, with the series failing to crack a 2.0 (receiving only a 1.7 in the demo).  Meanwhile, the time slot premiere of New Amsterdam (the third episode of the series) managed to hold on nicely to its most recently aired episode last Thursday.

Rounding out the rest of the evening, ABC’s October Road ended its season on a low, as it was off by nearly 50% among viewers and over 50% among adults 18-49 from last season’s finale, while The CW’s Pussycat Dolls Present: Girlicious continues to fare poorly.

Though week two of new series’ Oprah’s Big Give and Here Come The Newlyweds were off considerably from their series premiere numbers (especially Oprah’s Big Give, which was off by 3.85 million or 25% among viewers and 23% among adults 18-49) ABC still managed to easily grab a Sunday night win across all three marks.

Price is Right continues to draw strong ratings, as the program (the nights most-watched) led CBS to win among households and viewers.

NBC, however, managed to just do good enough to place first for the evening among adults 18-49, courtesy a two-hour edition of Dateline.

Elsewhere on the evening, The CW’s soon to be departing Smackdown managed some of its strongest ratings, drawing over 5 million viewers.
