Comic-Con 2008: ABC Family’s “The Middleman” Panel + Season Shortened to 12 Episodes July 25, 2008 12:43 pm

ABC Family’s panel at Comic-Con 2008 for The Middleman featured Javier Grillo-Marxuach and Matt Kesslar.  Natalie Morales offered a recorded message that she couldn’t attend.  Here are the highlights courtesy TV Squad.

  • Some scenes from upcoming episodes were screened.
  • The season finale is filled with the Middleman screaming profanity, complete with blackout-out bleeps.
  • Asked by an audience member why the odd 10pm timeslot, Javier responded that ABC Family doesn’t believe the show jives with the rest of the programming, and that it’s a better fit later in the evening.

According to TV Squad, that’s pretty much all that was presented at the panel.  Pretty disappointing.

In other news, TV Squad is reporting that the first season has been shortened from 13 episodes to 12.

Javier posted on his Live Journal site Radio Free Javi that the reason for the reduction in episodes is that though critical response has been strong and the network loves it, the ratings haven’t been all that great, adding that the decision to drop the 13th episode was a joint one between him and the network.

The Middleman airs Monday night’s at 10pm on ABC Family.

20th Century Fox has released a one-sheet movie poster for the horror/comedy Jennifer’s Body from Juno screenwriter Diablo Cody.  Check it out after the jump.  Kinda surprising that the poster bares a remarkably similar resemblance to the just-released True Blood HBO series poster.

Synopsis
Demon possession, devilish cheerleaders, and Satanic rock stars are all on the chopping block with this horror comedy from the production team behind Juno. Screenwriter Diablo Cody provides the script, with producing duties handled by Jason Reitman and Dan Dubiecki. The story centers on an impish high-school student (Amanda Seyfried) who has to protect her town against her best friend, Jennifer (Megan Fox), who after being bedeviled by an evil rock band, develops a taste for human flesh. Girlfight’s Karyn Kusama directs the Fox Atomic production.

Jennifer’s Body hasn’t been dated yet, but will release this year.

“The Dark Knight” Continues To Impress Critics July 10, 2008 6:12 pm

Just eight more days folks!  That’s all that stands between now and the release of The Dark Knight.  With that in mind, I thought it might be a good idea to take a quick sampling of what the critics, the few so far, who have seen The Dark Knight are saying about it.

Rotten Tomatoes has the movie at a perfect 100% (11 Fresh, 0 Rotten).  Here’s a sampling from their selection of reviews.

This is not a Batman movie — this is a 2008 version of The Untouchables with The Batman as Elliot Ness, The Joker as Al Capone, and much better toys.
David Poland, Hot Button

Martin Scorsese’s The Departed. Michael Mann’s Heat. Brian de Palma’s The Untouchables. And now, Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight can join the ranks as one of the best crime dramas in modern movie history.
Staci Layne Wilson, Horror.com

The Dark Knight is not only the best film I have seen this year, but quite possibly the best superhero movie ever made.
Brad Miska, Bloody Disgusting

Daring and uncompromisingly different from previous incarnations of Batman, Nolan hasn’t redefined the superhero genre as much as created an unforgettable piece of crime fiction within the context of that realm.
Edward Douglas, ComingSoon.net

And over at MetaCritic.com, the film is currently at an equally impressive 97% (from four reviews):

Beyond dark. It’s as black — and teeming and toxic — as the mind of the Joker. “Batman Begins,” the 2005 film that launched Nolan’s series, was a mere five-finger exercise. This is the full symphony.
Richard Corliss, Time

Enthralling…An ambitious, full-bodied crime epic of gratifying scope and moral complexity, this is seriously brainy pop entertainment that satisfies every expectation raised by its hit predecessor and then some.
Justin Chang, Variety

Bale again brilliantly personifies all the deep traumas and misgivings of Batman’s alter ego, Bruce Wayne. A bit of Hamlet is in this Batman.
Kirk Honeycutt, The Hollywood Reporter

No fair giving away the mysteries of The Dark Knight. It’s enough to marvel at the way Nolan — a world-class filmmaker, be it “Memento,” “Insomnia” or “The Prestige” — brings pop escapism whisper-close to enduring art.
Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

The Dark Knight hits conventional and IMAX theaters on July 18, 2008.
