Richard Roeper, co-host of At the Movies, has decided not to re-up his contract and is leaving the show. Roeper, a Sun-Times columnist, signed on in 2000 after the death of original co-host Gene Siskel. Roeper says that he plans to “proceed elsewhere with my ninth year as the co-host of a movie review show that honors the standards established by Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert more than 30 years ago, ” indicating that perhaps he and Ebert, who is a copyright holder on the signature “thumbs up-thumbs down” judgment says that he had “exercised his right to withhold use of the “thumbs” until he had a new contract, adding “Disney cannot use the `thumbs'”.
